The author is clearly very well read yet introduces a number of their personal preferences into the text which are not standard of care (i.e. nesiritide as first line therapy for CHF exacerbation, 3% saline as medical management for hyperkalemia). Many of the questions follow a convoluted path to generate an answer, and sometimes the question being asked is different from the one for which the answer is 'right'.Useful text and I'll go through it, but the format and nature of the questions are pretty far off what makes it into boards or what you see in clinical practice. For fellows taking boards the first time- they may be awful and basically a useless hustle by the ABIM, but even they aren't this bad a foray into pedantic pimping. If you're batting 50% doing some of these chapters, don't worry too much and make sure to do the NephSap questionsAlso- using the textbook you authored as a reference without listing primary sources and claiming yourself as an authority is tacky at best and intellectually disingenuous at worst.A few weeks into using this- likely not worth the anxiety and increased need for antihypertensives for the reader. This desperately needs an edit- many of the questions are wrong- describing baking soda as an over the counter remedy containing 'calcium bicarbonate' as a cause of hypercalcemia, neglecting large anion gaps in the acid-base questions and not showing the math that leads to their wrong answer, and listing the different answers to the same questions (question 85).Pay an editor who knows the field to actually go through this- I'm giving up and using another source

Probably the best question review book available on amazon, but riddled with calculation errors and statements that can be misinterpreted. ASN has some questions online as well, likely a bit more reliable than this source. I wish the authors would have taken editing more seriously in this book.. the simple arithmetic errors is frustrating 😑

He was himself a child at the time, only 14 when he was finally arrested. Author Harold Schechter, a New York literature professor who has made a name for himself documenting nonfiction accounts of heinous crimes, deftly resurrects the past from newspaper accounts, letters, and other historical documents, including a reform school's massive volume disturbingly titled History of Boys. Schechter doesn't take the easy way out. He could have just pieced together reports and accounts, letting the record stiffly tell the tale. Instead, he blends his research into a seamless story, fascinating in its horror, as well as its ability to turn the century-old characters into real people. From serial killer expert Schechter comes a grisly, hopped-up, but surprisingly well-executed narrative of the vicious crimes and long imprisonment of Jesse Pomeroy, the notorious 19th-century "Boston Boy Fiend." Schechter argues that "killer kids have always been with us," but even in the context of a history of horrifying examples of youth violence, the case of Pomeroy is appalling. An abused, deformed, impoverished child, he graduated at age 12 from animal cruelty to the ritualized torture and mutilation of younger boys. In 1872 he was caught and sentenced to six years in a reformatory. He presented a rehabilitated facade and, following his shrewish but loyal mother's campaigning, was released after 16 months. Six weeks later he killed a neighborhood girl; an indifferent constabulary failed to discover her body until after Pomeroy was apprehended for a second vicious child-murder. This confluence caused unprecedented outrage; ultimately, Pomeroy received a life sentence in solitary confinement. While Schechter has displayed a career enthusiasm for what Hannibal Lecter termed "louche" subject matter (Schechter's books on serial murderers have been titled Bestial, Depraved, Deranged, etc.), he is a deft writer and does well at re-creating from documentation the thoughts and perspectives of long-dead figures; even Pomeroy is rendered subtly, with creepy verisimilitude. Schechter ably portrays the "living death" of Pomeroy's captivity (he served 53 years, making repeated escape attempts, and had become a media curiosity by the 1920s), and captures the poignancy of the infirm Pomeroy's release, in 1929, to a prison farm, where he remained until his death in 1932. Harold Schechter has done the research and presented it in a biography that answers most questions the average reader would have about one of Americas most notorious child killers and torturers. What he says is always based on the facts he has uncovered. For example, letters written by the boy killer in jail, though not found for many years, show that he was fascinated by corporeal punishment and torture. The mind of a boy psychopath is revealed in this book. Yet Schechter never indulges in morbid speculation or exaggeration beyond what his research suggests.

In another of Harold Schechter scholarly but so very readable books about serial killer, he points out that the good old days were not particularly beautiful, clean and pure, and free of violent serial killers, Jack the Ripper being an exception. With sewage and industrial waste dumped in rivers, lakes, and the ocean; the incredible amount of manure produced by horse-driven transport; the deplorable conditions found in 'the little red schoolhouse,' where the student-teacher ratio in large city school systems would cause current teachers to seek a different profession even it was flipping burgers; no sane person not blinded by nostalgia would consider 'the good old days' particularly good. Whatever problems plague us today--drugs, gangs, massacres of the innocent by the deranged, sensationalism in the media, corruption in our government--existed in the past. And that includes the serial killer, especially "Killer Kids." Murderous juveniles didn't suddenly appear with Columbine; like the poor, they have always been with us.Schechter recounts the life of one such "killer kid:" Jesse Pomeroy, called by the Boston press in 1872 the "Boy Torturer" among other names. He had tortured over a half-dozen children and butchered two more by the time he was fourteen. By the time he was captured Jesse Pomeroy was to become known as the "Boston Boy Fiend." And fiend he was as Schechter aptly proves in this tale of Jesse's reign of terror in 1870s Boston. As with all of Schechter's books about true crime, I recommend this one for it's fine writing, detailed psychological insights, and the strong sense of place that the author always evokes.

i read the true story of the psycho in the 1950's by the same author. these crimes happened in the 1870s. if there is one thing history teaches us, is that there where a lot of un reported crimes happening in those days. people just disappeared.i believe there where probably several people miss treated growing up and becoming killers as they aged.good thing today we have forensics. i recommend this book on history education alone.

I'm from the Boston area, and while my whole family is in Chelsea (the site of much of the action) I had only heard about Jesse Pomeroy while reading The Alienist by Caleb Carr. I was quite excited to find out about Schechter's new book (thanks Amazon!). I actually became interested in true crime after the Columbine shootings, and have been reading about children who kill. From Mary Bell to the Liverpool boys who killed a toddler, to the Florida kids who killed the local bully, this subject has been endlessly facinating to me. Ok, so maybe it is a bit gruesome too. But I will say that with this book, Schechter hits the nail on the head. Children who kill other children have been with us for a long time, and we continue to give the same lame excuses: the media (for Jesse that was dime novels, for our recent murders its the movies and video games that are blamed), single mothers, and just plain evil.This book does not answer the question of why, but we get a glimpse into the mind of one of these child killers. It is quite chilling. Schechter's research is awesome and his writing style is engaging and his message is clear (and frightening) the next fiend could be living next door, playing in the sandbox!If this book and subject matter are of interest to you, I also highly recommend Cries Unheard: Why Children Kill; The Story of Mary Bell.

Thus was an excellently researched book about a very twisted individual. Pretty much everything!!

This was a fascinating book, as all of Schechters' books are but this one, perhaps because the boy was so young, really makes you go "wow, some people are just insane". It gives you a glimpse back in time to when it happened by painting a visual picture for you and then takes you into the psyche of those involved. Great book. Great story that is really, not well known and should be.

While the book is helpful in terms of the breakdown of subject areas, there are multiple errors throughout the book and the online test questions. Several answers are wrong. This book was required for my class and other students have noticed the errors as well. I will utilize the breakdown of subject areas in studying for boards, however, I will be purchasing the practice test modules from the PNCB site. I purchased the 5th edition used and the previous owner had marked all the answers. I wanted to purchase this new so that there would be no markings in the book and I would have the access code to utilize the book online. $76 is a lot of money for something with multiple errors.

As I prepare for my final, I have been using this book alot for practice questions. While it is a great review book as it is in outline form and goes over the most important topics. I have noticed that every chapter has 1-5 questions at the end with wrong answers. There are alot of mistakes distinguishing “hypo...” “hyper...”, typos, and just plain wrong answers that if you go back to the chapter and read it clearly states the right answer. Im at a level that I can pretty much distinguish when a questions was published incorrectly, but still ehen studying form an important exam you don’t any material that might give you doubts when your taking your exam. I took a picture with an example of a question, the rational, then the material in the book.

I like the format and it was helpful in guiding my studying. However, as others have mentioned, there are multiple errors including wrong answers included on the questions at the end of the chapter. This happened multiple times (especially in the GU chapter), which was frustrating. Otherwise it was a decent resource.

I did not get paid for this review and in fact, I originally only rented this book to help me study for class. Can I just say how amazing this book was!!!!! It focused on all the important and need to know content. I would highly recommend this book especially for students in a NP program with a Pedi rotation. The book was clear, focused and to the point.

Initially, this book was a little dense. The first chapter is about nursing theories and nothing about patient care. I was worried, but as I continued to review the content and study for my Pediatric NP exam, I was very satisfied with the content reviewed. I am testing in a few weeks and really hope this book, amongst other study aids have prepared me well for my exam.

This book was a great addition to my review course books because it included more in-depth literature of disease processes my other books didn't even mention. However, I did encounter some incorrect answers on the review questions, which is frustrating given the context of this book. Also, there are no rationales for the review questions either, which would've been extremely helpful for learning purposes.

Great review book! I agree with another review that it is jammed/crammed packed with information. But, it was outlined great and covered pertinent information. It also had awesome review questions at the end of each chapter. However, this should not be your only study resource. I used a total of three review books with questions, two texts books, Internet resources, notes from my clinicals, and PNCB questions to study. I passed!!!

I bought this book to review for the certification exam and to help me with my studying during the last 2 semesters of my program. It is pretty good. The pages are thick enough that they can handle being highlighted without bleeding though too much to the other side (very important for study materials!). The information in each section is decent, and there are several questions. However, there are no explanations/rationale for the answers, so that's a missed opportunity for learning. There is minimal information on pharmacology, but I'm trusting them that it has what we need to know. It's not what you'd want to use to study for a pharmacology exam, though. Overall, I'm glad I got it, but it certainly won't be the only study guide I use!
