Review

“John Rousmaniere's gripping account of that calamitous race is a must-read for anyone thinking about sailing offshore. This richly detailed account provides inspiration for all sailors to thoroughly prepare and use good sense at sea.” - Gary Jobson, ESPN sailing commentator“There are few new lessons in safety at sea. What we teach is the accumulated wisdom of centuries, passed down to us by those who took the trouble to think and then to write. [Fastnet, Force 10] is still the best single source of those lessons, in my view.... Thanks for a great book and a lifetime of caring for those who go down to the sea in ships.” - John Bonds, Safety-at-sea expert and former director of the U.S. Sailing Association and the U.S. Naval Academy sailing program“I reread Fastnet, Force 10 for at least the fourth time, with pleasure and admiration, as always. For a long time now, it has been a huge favorite of mine; as a writer, I'm dazzled by [John Rousmaniere]'s sure-footed handling of a complex narrative, with multiple points of view, all beautifully woven into a continuous and powerful story. After twenty years, it still reads as freshly as ever.” - Jonathan Raban, author of Passage to Juneau, Coasting, and Old Glory and editor of The Oxford Book of the Sea

John Rousmaniere is a well known sailing writer who knows whereof he writes. He was aboard one of the yachts in the 1979 Fastnet Race when they were struck by the worst storm in the history of competitive sailing. The weather forecast was not for severe weather although the English Channel and the Western Approaches have been known for bad weather since the Armada in 1588. The D-Day invasion was delayed one day and almost called off by a June storm. This storm was actually rather small but intense and its significance was not recognized in time to avoid the catastrophic effect on the smaller boats in the fleet. Rousmaniere was a watch captain on a large and strong Swan built yacht that survived the storm with little damage but a hairy experience for the crew. The smaller boats were "caught out" as the storm hit before they reached the Fastnet Rock where they could run for home. Some wiser skippers dropped out early but many waited too long or were too far from shelter when it hit during the night. After the event was over, Rousmaniere returned to interview survivors from the most badly damaged boats. His account is the best we will have and is still a classic to put beside Adlard Coles' "Adlard Coles' Heavy Weather Sailing, Sixth Edition or the later editions by Peter Bruce, Heavy Weather Sailing, 30th Anniversary Edition. Rousmaniere's book should be in every offshore sailor's library.

An excellent review of the tragic Fastnet race, tamping down criticism of the sailors who died or were separated from their boats. Rousmaniere's writing uneven, sometimes a bit stiff, an academic sort of approach, but in other places it becomes colorful and personal. All in all, a good and valuable read for anyone interested in ocean sailing.

From reading Perfect Storm two years ago I have started reading adventure stories at sea. This is a fascinating race in extreme conditions which the author describes very well based on his first hand knowledge. But he also analyzes what went wrong and where the blame should be placed if anywhere. The pictures are exceptional and this is an excellent read with a few slow spots. However, it is not my favorite sailing adventure. That would be Fatal Storm, the Inside Story of the Sydney-Hobart race. While it may not have taught as much, the stories were more in-depth and mesmerizing. This book has historical importance from a sailing perspective as it was one of the first races of the modern era with catastrophic results and much was learned for equipment development. A must read for sailors and adventure junkies. Also good for someone wanting to learn about the technical side of racing and weather.

This reviewer was introduced to the story of the Fastnet race of 1979 from the book "The Proving Ground" by G. Bruce Knecht. "Fastnet, Force 10," however, was not as enjoyable for this reader as was the "The Proving Ground." Author John Rousmaniere definitely knows his stuff. He was a participant in the race on the yacht "Toscana." In fact, there is so much technical jargon and expertise in this book regarding types of sails, the effects of a boat's speed, and the shapes of waves, etc. as to make the book quite the challenge for the layreader who is not familiar with sailing. As another reviewer noted, "Fastnet, Force 10" is a more interesting read for a yachtman who already understands the basics of sailing equipment and technology. The subject, itself, is riveting and gut-wrenching. The Fastnet is a biannual yacht race from the southwest coastline of England (starting from Cowes), round Land's End and across the Celtic Sea, past the southwest coast of Ireland and ending at Plymouth. It is 608 nautical miles. The race in August 1979 was met by a violent storm with gale force 10 winds. Rescue efforts involved some 4,000 people and cost approximately $770,000. Only 85 of 303 yachts that started the race finished and 15 men were killed. The way the story is presented in "Fastnet, Force 10," however, makes it a surprisingly arduous read. The organization of the book made the story less compelling in this reviewer's opinion. It begins with the trials of the yacht "Grimalkin." It follows the yacht from pre-race preparations, troubles experienced when the storm hits, the loss of the skipper, the abandonment of two crew members left for dead by three of the survivors, and the rescue after one of the sailors still on the "Grimalkin" dies. The "Grimalkin" story ends at page 64 and will be revisited by page 253. Then the story shifts to the author's yacht, the "Toscana." After the experience of the "Toscana," the author skips to other ships, then to a history of boating deaths, details the use of different types of sails, factors that determine the size and shape of waves, the work of the lifeboat crews (particularly coxswain Matt Lethbridge), etc. The story did not have cohesion. The book finishes with the aftermath of the tragic storm including the media's response. The controversial comments made by Ted Turner, who was a participant in the race, are closely examined. It wasn't a book that kept this reader's interest, but a book to toil through to the end.The point made in "The Proving Ground" is that the 1979 Fastnet race proved a lesson to the participants in the 1998 Sydney to Hobart race in staying with one's yacht unless it was certain to sink. It was believed that some of the fatalities of the Fastnet race was due to crewmen leaving their ships for life rafts prematurely, considering the yachts abandoned remained afloat. Curiously, this subject was only touched on briefly by Rousmaniere towards the end of the book on pages 236-238 and, using quotes of fellow Fastnet competitors, on pages 254 and 258. The author does not give a clear opinion on the subject, though he appears to side with those who believed it was the right decision to leave their boats ("...critics chose to ignore available evidence that the life rafts did save many sailors"--pg. 238).The book is illustrated throughout, including close-up photos of rescue efforts. It definitely offers a plethora of information about the 1979 Fastnet race as well as expert insight into what the crews went through. Technical details on sailing and weather conditions, however, may bog down the reading for those with little to no knowledge of the subject.

Strangely disappointing. Starts out reviewing the “end” repeatedly and in such detail I lost interest in reading the whole story.

Sent to my Father as a gift, he is enjoying the read!As I used to crew on one of the sailboats that was in this dangerous race.

Excellent account. It helps to understand the mentality of those who would set out to sea and attack a storm head on trusting their skills and strength to overcome and endure. Some lost the battle. Those that survived know they will never face a greater challenge. A good account of seamanship, bravery, human will, and for some some questionable judgement calls. It has changed the approach that many sailors take to those life and death situations that they may face on the open ocean.

A thorough and detailed report on a sailboat race reaching out to the east eastern approaches to England which ran headlong into a force 10 storm.

The Ode Less Travelled: Unlocking the Poet Within

From Publishers Weekly

In this delightfully erudite, charming and soundly pedagogical guide to poetic form, British actor (narrator of the Harry Potter movies, among other roles), novelist and secret poet Fry leads the reader through a series of lessons on meter, rhythm, rhyme and stanza length and reveals the structural logic of every imaginable poetic form, including the haiku, the ballad, the ode and the sonnet. Writing poetry, like any hobby, should be fun, Fry claims, and while talent is inborn, technique can be learned. Inviting readers to study the wealth of choices of form available in the world's major poetic traditions, Fry himself pens intentionally vapid yet entertaining poems that demonstrate each form's rules and patterning, and ends each lesson with wittily devised exercises for readers. Fry rails against the dumbing down of verse in a section subtitled "Stephen gets all cross": "It is as if we have been encouraged to believe that form is a kind of fascism and that to acquire knowledge is to drive a jackboot into the face of those poor souls who are too incurious, dull-witted or idle to find out what poetry can be." Fry has created an invaluable and highly enjoyable reference book on poetic form, which deserves to achieve widespread academic adoption, despite or even because of its saucy and Anglocentric tone. From Booklist

The author, a noted novelist, comedian, and actor, doubts his new book will make it onto school curricula, and that's a shame. Of all the poetry guides you're likely to read (and there are a ton of them out there), this one's probably the most entertainingly written and downright useful. The book is full of technical terms--spondee, enjambment, trochee--but these are explained so cleverly and so clearly that we very quickly can use them as though we've been doing so all our lives. The book is an education not only in the mechanics of poetry but also in its history. And, naturally, it's full to bursting with the author's delightfully impish wit: "The above," he writes at one point, "is precisely the kind of worthless arse-dribble I am forced to read whenever I agree to judge a poetry competition." Fry's legion of fans will get an enormous kick out of it, and English-lit students will learn more from this one book than they will from a stack of more traditional textbooks. This is such a surprising book. I mean we all know that Fry is brilliant but who thought he could write perhaps the best college-level introduction to poetic form and effect? There are, yes, quite a few books about poetic form and effect but . . . this is not only the funniest, smartest, well-organized, and insightful one I've seen it's just flat out the best book of its kind.Fry is perhaps not well-served by his publisher . . . the book needs some development work here and there (basically just filling in bits and piece of information that Fry skips over, expanding the examples, and fleshing out the references) and the design, both of the cover and text should be reworked. The current interior and cover, at least in the US edition, are basically just splitting the difference between a serious textbook and a trade book but the book, and Fry, and students would be much better served by a interior design that formalizes the hierarchies of information in the text and is professionally typeset by a designer who is used to dealing with complex instructional texts. (Oh, I'm sure it's a bit of a hard sell to say "textbook" in a meeting about a book by Fry but there's no reason a good designer can't deal with the information design and make the design modern and lively.) The text is typeset perhaps slightly better than your average mid-list trade book but it is a complex text about, hello!, the English language . . . Fry's overall presentation is undercut by the everyday sloppiness of the typesetting and the attempt to squeeze an instructional text into a simpler standard non-fiction trade text design. Take a look at, say, a Princeton University Press title that covers similar ground and you'll see immediately that there are much better, more useful, ways of designing a book like Fry's. Likewise, thought a much easier problem to solve, the cover doesn't help position the book in the market. It's not a standard trade non-fiction book, it's a freaking genius and classic textbook that every college student should have at the ready. The cover doesn't have to be dry and boring, it can be wild and lively but . . . it needs to be a cover that looks like it belongs next to the CMS, a Fowler's, and a Webster's.Publisher! Hello! This book could, and should, have a long, long tail. There's no reason I can think of that the book can't be a _standard_ textbook for nearly every college student subjected to a class in poetry. It's not half as dry as the Turco book on poetic form and it's not as detailed as the Miller Williams but I suspect it could have a larger, more enthusiastic audience than either of those books . . . and both of those have gone through many editions. The Fry might be hard sell in a publishing meeting but I suspect it's much, much easier sale at, say, a college English department meeting. What adjunct English prof wouldn't leap at a chance to use a textbook that's a good excuse for watching a bunch of Youtube clips of Fry and Laurie? So, all of my complaints aside, this is a completely unexpected Five Star Book, easily the best available undergraduate introduction to poetic form and effect. Buy it. Read it. Laugh. Cry. Write poetry!

I LOVED this book.I am reasonably new to poetry, having only been reading and writing it extensively for a couple of years. I've looked on-line for "how to write better poetry", which is well worth doing, however, Stephen Fry takes all the results from all the google searches and condenses it down into a superbly ordered and explained treatise on why he likes poetry and how poetry is written, analysed and discussed. All of it told in an accessible, witty and fun way. Typical Fry.I have been hanging out with poets for years. I discuss their work, I discuss my own work, but we rarely, if ever, discuss meter. Most poets I know and talk to barely know what meter is... it's that thing that the high school teacher glazed over, because she didn't understand it herself and that was just one of the things on the curriculum that has to be taught on the way to sanitizing poetry out of the students (I generalize - that was my poetry experience. If you had better, I envy you!). Fry makes it front and centre. Poetry and meter are linked and understanding meter will make you a better poet. I believe this strongly. His overviews of the different types of rhyme (he has at least 4), poetry form and all his examples are lots of fun to read. I was particularly taken with the villanelle form, which Fry confessed, was the form that led to him writing this book in the first place.I borrowed this book from the library and took it on holiday with me. About half way through, I fought to get an internet connection and ordered a copy, which is now sitting in front of me. It is now my poetry reference and one I go to often.

It’s been a long time since my last poetry class, and I’ll have to confess that even back then my attention sometimes wandered. Stephen Fry is a writer, comedian, and actor. He was the comedy partner of Hugh Laurie (“House”) for years, and if you saw the recent The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, he played the foppish Master of Laketown. His writing talent shines here, and the Ode Less Travelled is a wonderful review (or introduction, if you never studied poetry) to the mechanics of poetry. Fry covers most of the basic components of poetry, and offers wonderful examples from great and lesser-known literature, as well as his own hilarious constructions. The book is designed as a tongue-in-cheek workbook, where you are encouraged (ordered?) to try the various techniques yourself. If you have an interest in poetry, or wonder why some people do, this book is a delightful learning tool.

This book has proven its worth tenfold! As a student of British Literature, I have often found myself a bit anxious when it comes to writing about poetry. Mr. Fry has come to my rescue countless times with this book. His clear descriptions and gentle encouragement have turned my fear into appreciation. It is intelligent without being verbose. Even if you have no intention of writing poetry, students and the casually interested will reap benefits from this book. I can't think of a better teacher than Stephen Fry and am indebted to him for helping me in my hour of need.

This is a wonderfully witty book. If, before I retire, I teach creative writing again, I'm using it as my text. It fairly brims with wit and wisdom. My only quibble's with the fact that, when Fry criticizes Hardy's use of the word "hue" in "The Convergence of the Twain," he does so in what appears to be blissful ignorance of the fact that "hue" does not have to mean "color." I don't think it's fair ofFry to pick on Hardy for having known more about the word "hue" than Fry does. All this hue and cry about "hue," however, is small potatoes up against the delight that Fry offers us page by page in this sterling book.

Sigh. Maureen Smith was one of the BEST writers in romance. Her early romantic suspense was good, but her Wolf Pack series was GREAT. Her books had well-rounded characters, fresh dialogue, exciting plot lines, and soooooo much passion. This book, however--much like a lot of her recent writing--was just...okay. It didn't pull me in the way a lot of her previous novels did. The dialogue felt stale, the plot was sufficient but not captivating, the pacing was a tad slow, and the characters were interesting enough but not intriguing. That's not to say that it wasn't well written; it just wasn't her usual hit. I liked Scarlett and Viggo, but they were nowhere near as exciting as Lexy and Quentin or Samara and Marcus or Taylor and Manning. Sigh....I really have loved Smith's work in the past, but so many of her recent books seem to lack the qualities that distinguished Smith from her peers.

Disappointing not what I expect from Mrs. Smith it was a complete waste of money there is no story or journey or real conflict just sex. I have been a loyal supporter but this story was just bad. It not even romance just erotic. I'm used to a balance in story but I preferred her suspense her story quality is going down.I would not have had a problem with the story being erotica, if there was some meat to the story. The cussing was not that bad for me. We got the real grandfather conflict near the last few chapters. He has the dreams but they seem random. If you look at the first 10 to 15 chapters nothing really happens in term of conflict but it contented sex. To me conflict is what makes a story interesting. If you categorize a story as romance at least have a little bit of courtship. I get it people jump into bed early these days but you have a whole book should have been to tell their love story. I wish she would have given us a romance story, especially since that is what I paid for. I get the love at first sight approach fine then you could have gave a little more in jealous people trying to break them up storyline something. Most of the book was fluff and a waste of pages/energy. There are unanswered questions which bandmate was Viggo referring too and who sent the picture of her kissing the rock guy? Who gave Myles the info of where she would be?

My oh my this book was worth the wait. The moment I saw the title I clicked on it so fast and when I saw the page count I knew I was in for a treat. I didn't think hockey players could get any hotter than Reid Holden from the first book but wow Viggo is in a league of his own. Him and Scarlett burned up the pages with their chemistry and sex appeal, I couldn't put this book down it was such a page turner. I loved how their relationship progressed, was so happy they didn't just crash into bed the first time they encountered each other, even though they had a few chances to do so lol. When it did happen it was worth the wait and hot, hot, hot! Talk about two ppl who are suited for each other, Scarlett and Viggo were meant for each other. I also enjoyed reading more about Nadia and Reid's relationship and wedding plans. Logan and Hunter are also very interesting and sexy characters and I can't wait to dive into their stories, from what I gaged in the book I'm thinking Nadia and Scarlett's cousins Kandace and Leilani will be making their debut in the next books, I'm thinking it will be Logan and Leilani and Kandace and Hunter, if so I can't wait to see Hunter knock down Kandace's walls and challenge her thoughts on interracial dating. Bravo Ms. Smith the writing flowed smoothly with great but not over the top detail, didn't remember reading any grammatical errors. I'm so in love with Viggo and Scarlett that I didn't want it to end but at last all good things must come to an end. At least I know there is more to come and that we may even get to read some more about Scarlett and Viggo's relationship. Don't have us waiting too long Ms. Smith I can't wait for more on the Rebels!

Okay, Wicked Games is STILL my fav so far! But Viggo and Scarlett's story was good; just as steamy and sexy as Wicked Games! I love a great plot, a little conflict or angst, fluid storytelling and oh yeah......again, hot steamy sex scenes! LOL! Scarlet did get on my nerve a bit but...Ms. Smith delivers on all of that as usual. Honestly, I didn't mind the longer story. I actually like long story especially if it fleshes out the story & characters more, explains more things in detail and its not just empty wasteful space filling!I will say, as long as it took to get this book out, I was hoping that the story would be just as phenomenon as a Wicked Games... It wasn't...but it was still good! Now, on to Logan and Hunter's stories! I am just hoping that it won't take another two years...cause I almost gave up on this series and when I tell you Wicked Games had me hyped and on pins for the new one...whew it was bad😂! But I will wait, but if it takes tooooo long for the next one I just may be ok with being done with the series with just the two....because honestly when I downloaded this book I was NOT as anxious to read it.... I actually bought and read 3 other books before starting this book! Finally getting it, was kind of anticlimactic; it was just too long a wait and I feel like I lost a little of my interest in the series.Anyhoo, All in all...get the book! But read Wicked Games first before you do! Thank me later!

Review

“A fascinating dual biography of one of Hollywood's most acclaimed screenwriters . . . and one of its most famous actresses . . . a deeply personal story, informed by the author's affection for her parents . . . Revealing . . . refreshing.” —Booklist“A vibrant account by a loving and thoughtful daughter of two decent people who were prominent Hollywood figures during the industry's studio era. Victoria Riskin interweaves the biographies of her parents, Fay Wray and Robert Riskin, and places their lives against the unfolding histories of Hollywood and the nation. Riskin alternates between closeups and long shots, writing with the intimacy of a daughter but also with the reportorial detachment of a historian who has done her homework. Wise, penetrating, smoothly written; a skillful juggling act and, first to last, a pleasure to read.” —Foster Hirsch, author of Otto Preminger, The Man Who Would Be King“Riskin gives a heartfelt account of the lives of her mother, actress Fay Wray, and her father, screenwriter Robert Riskin . . . [a] nostalgic and reverent remembrance of Riskin’s famous parents and their Golden Age Hollywood milieu.” —Publishers Weekly“A wonderfully intimate memoir, vivid and personal in the best possible sense, illuminating parallel lives full of drama, humor, and indelible images. I found it compulsive reading.” —James Curtis, author of Between Flops: A Biography of Preston Sturges; W.C. Fields: A Biography; and Spencer Tracy: A Biography“Anyone who thinks that Fay Wray was just the girl screaming in King Kong's hand as he climbs the Empire State Building is in for a big—and pleasant—surprise. Her daughter Victoria Riskin has written a fascinating, richly detailed and superbly illustrated account of the lives of two remarkable people, Fay Wray and star screenwriter Robert Riskin, that spans one of the most interesting periods of Hollywood from the advent of the talkies through the depression and the war and on through the time of the Hollywood blacklist; this is not only the love story of two brilliantly talented people, it is a brilliant piece of cinematic history, at once robust, touching, and deeply satisfying, with a cast of characters that includes almost everybody of interest in those tumultuous years in the motion picture business. For anybody who is interested in the movies, Victoria Riskin's book will be a must-read.” —Michael Korda, author of Charmed Lives“A joy to read . . . a Hollywood memoir of rare depth and sensitivity. All who love movies will be captivated by this splendid dual biography of two of Hollywood's most fascinating and colorful personalities.” —Joseph McBride, author of Frank Capra: The Catastrophe of Success“I was always curious about life in Hollywood before I came here. I found out in this fascinating book. And wow! What a story it is!” —Kirk Douglas“One of the great real-life Hollywood love stories; a warm, evocative, and deeply moving tale.” —Kenneth Turan, film critic, Los Angeles Times“If this gracefully-written memoir was simply the rich and absorbing account of two unique and talented people who fell in love, that would be enough. But it is also a study of the creative process; a colorful account of Hollywood’s Golden Age; a telling slice of American history; and a deeply moving testament to a daughter’s love. An altogether wonderful book.” —Richard North Patterson

Victoria Riskin, a former President of the Writers Guild of America, takes over the role of "Best Writer of Hollywood Lore" from the late, great Bob Thomas. Her memoir is full of information, charm, humor, and romance. "Faye Wray and Robert Riskin, a Hollywood Memoir" is fascinating and colorful, heady with the ambiance of the Hollywood of the thirties to the fifties...an era of glamor, all-powerful studio moguls, labor strife, WWII, and federal communist witchhunts, all interwoven with a beautiful love story. This is just a terrific book!

Ironically, Fay was orders of magnitude stronger than the mythical beast, King Kong, who made her famous. She managed to endure absolutely awful life situations, any one of which could have killed the average person. An amazing lady.

I tend to wade in warily when I read biographies, most-especially celebrity biographies. What I like in any biography or memoir is not so much that it's just nice tales of people's lives, but that it's as much a history book of the times with "edges" and shadings that give context. And to my great pleasure, this is that. Through a convoluted set of events, I was able to get my hands on an early copy of the book, and it was worth the effort. It's absolutely wonderful. This is not a mere collection of stories by a loving daughter putting her family world in the most-shining light, but rather about the Depression, the Golden Age of Hollywood, war, McCarthyism and more -- at the center of which are the two separate lives of the author's parents until they finally meet. But since that meeting doesn't come until the last third, it's like following a winding path of successes and major hurdles -- weaving with many remarkable and also dark figures -- before getting to that point.Helping too is that it's wonderfully written by a daughter who is herself a terrific, professional writer with great skill and insight. The risk of all memoirs like this is that it will fall into adulation, and in fairness while there are a few times when the book does creep towards that, it consistently pulls itself away by adding context, further depth and then moves on. I sense that's because (beyond being so well-written) underneath it all is the running theme that the best biographies have in making them not just specific on fascinating lives, but universal, asking who we are and how did we get here? The book is a gem.

A loving memoir by the accomplished daughter of two famous parents, woven into the tapestry of the early days of glitz and glamour of Hollywood, followed by events of WW2 in which her father, Robert Riskin, the genius screenwriter of such brilliant films as "It Happened One Night' and "Meet John Doe", was an active participant in fighting the Nazis, and her devoted mother, Fay Wray ("King Kong") who acted in 77 films from 1925 to 1958. The thread of their love story, followed by tragedy, so beautifully and vividly rendered against the background of life among the stars in Los Angeles, the studio system, and world events reads like a compelling novel whose sterling characters come alive on the page and will remain in your memory forever.--Judith Kanner

For those of us who are movie buffs, this book provides a firsthand glimpse into the Golden Age of Hollywood. Beautifully written, the book seeks less to idolize these two great talents than to portray their humanity. And who better to do that than their daughter. With humor, insight, honesty and love the author provides an intimate and in-depth understanding of Wray and Riskin as both individuals and a couple. It does not disappoint.

A well written and frequently witty duo biography of acress Fay Wray and her husband, writer Robert Riskin. Written by their daughter, Victoria Riskin; the book is a love letter to the author's parents and their places in Golden Age Hollywood that doesn't shy away from discussing their flaws or their romantic entanglements before their marriage. A top notch addition to the History of old Hollywood.

I loved this book! It made me laugh and cry. Fascinating stories that reconstruct a long-gone and much missed era. A must for anyone with the slightest in the subject. The author's evocation of bygone days combined with her personal story gives the book much greater emotive content than would a history of her parents alone.I particularly admired her father’s letter to her mother of March 12, 1944. So perceptive, thoughtful and observant. Such integrity.I greatly enjoyed getting to know the author's parents as real people as well as the author herself. A great read.

The AMA uses metal wires on this which they do not do on their ICD Manual. As a result within less than ten days the holes at the bottom and top were tearing with their thin paper. This is a lot of money for a manual that begins falling apart when you use it. As bond it is a defective product. I had to search and pay for a plastic binding coil and will now have to pay for someone to insert it. There is no sense in this when the AMA could use the same coil it does on its other manuals.

Things wrong with my copy of this book:1) Printer issues, looks like ink faded in some parts and like 3D text in others.2) Spiral binding. It's too thin for this many pages.3) Hole punching on pages is rough.4) The included tabs rip the page if you need to move it, no matter how careful you are. Some of mine ripped paper off the page they're originally stuck to as well.5) As another review described, "paper confetti."For how expensive these books are, I'm very disappointed. I hope 2020's edition is much better quality.

This book is horribly manufactured. When it arrived I had to spend a couple hours reinforcing a bunch of pages that were hole-punched wrong. The hole-punching in general is awful, very rough. The book comes with sticky tabs on the first page but when I attempt to pull them off the paper underneath rips off with them. Not to mention, when I opened the shrink-wrapped me, my desk, and my floor were covered in itty bitty paper confetti that I can't seem to get rid of.I am currently attending a class with about fifteen other students who purchased their book from Amazon and they also have the same complaints as mine. There is something fundamentally wrong with the way these are all made. It is awful because these books are expensive.

The contents are fine, but the book itself is very poorly made. For some reason they used a thin wire binding and this makes it really hard to use this book. It's a 3 inch thick textbook. Also, I paid for a new textbook, but received a damaged book. The back flap is ripped and so are sevreal page corners. You're probably better off with an ebook version of this.

I can't believe this is labeled brand new when all the tabs are glued down or watered down or something. They are useless and make use of this book incredibly hard! This is ridiculous. I can't just randomly buy these labels.

Bought this book as a home reference for taking the CPC exam. It's extensively formatted and relatively organized well, but it could use a little improving. Many of the sections and codes I've found need a little more expansion or clarification, some of which can be a bit ambiguous, and there may be multiple codes for the exact same diagnosis, procedure, etc. which the book does not reference to.This book has only a very small amount of modifiers, and as I've discovered the hard way, if you're planning to use this reference book for the exam, you will also need an additional version(s) in order to correctly answer test questions and for use in practical applications.(See HCPCS Level II as you most likely need to purchase that book in conjunction with this one)It's spiral bound and easy to thumb through, but many of the entries cited are out of order. Ex: if you're looking for a code (this is an example only) 123.45 and can't find it in it's sequential order, then it may be found on the next pages within other codes, or listed separately.Note: because CPT codes are updated a minimum of once annually, it's very important to buy the current year's issue. This book is a must-have if you're planning to take the exam.

Content is fine but tabs are non usable. First of all they are white not clear so they cover up text on the tabbed paged. Second the adhesive is poor quality or incorrect adhesive all together and does not release from the page. Wire spiral is too small for number of pages so pages and cover keep ripping out of the holes. This book is unlikely to last the year. Really disappointed in binding quality.

The removable tabs are stuck to the page so I can't use them.

I recently downloaded your book, Professor Gillman, and it is absolutely amazing! I love the way it is explained and it is easy to read. And from a scientific point of view, it is a must for all. I admit that I don't normally read about brain science and psychological issues, but your book combines the subjects beautifully. I highly recommend this book for all intelligent readers including laypeople as well as medical and allied professionals.Dr Marietjie Weakley, Dentist.

Take pleasure from beautifully modulated writing and pleasure from the content. It is enlightening and engaging. Learn about the human body and brain you will. You will also learn how one of South Africa’s finest minds brought prowess for the country. How the human body works in all its complexity is no walk in the park as Prof Mark Gillman will tell you in his book. But to ignore the beauty and wonderment of body mind activities that he so deftly paints with his author’s paintbrush, would be folly. As you journey through this book and share Gillman’s own travails one observation is irrefutable. His shared research with Dr. Fred Lichtigfeld is the stuff of a Nobel Prize. They got their first and were not acknowledged. Their contribution to medical science and the study of addiction coupled to real time solutions leaves nothing to the imagination. The chapter on the pleasure of love and sex is seductive. Here is a case of art imitating life or life imitating art. Gillman’s choice of words coaxes you into this important world while not distorting the facts. This art of weaving you gently into the subject matter and his life’s work is not the province of a few chapters alone.I always look for the author in the narrative. One of my English literature teachers over the years, Prof. Stephen Grey, provided a compelling argument that the author was always buried in the text and when that precious gift is found, it lends new meaning to the writing. It means, he said that we are given a privileged spectator view into the life and times of the author by default. At once the reader is witness to the symbiosis of author and content granting fresh perspectives and nuances to what could have been a collection of words. The autobiographical theme with soupçons into Gillman’s personal and professional life is also persuasive. The author is generous in his willingness to acknowledge forces, resources and caring people who have made his rich life possible. That Gillman is an extremely well read man is obvious from the content. An eclectic mind he peppers his chapters with historical elements to make the content inviting. His choices are appropriate. His life’s journey is clearly endowed - spiritually, personally and intellectually. The reader is made part of this.Be seduced. I am. This is a book to enjoy on a long flight, to be read on a day of rest, into the quiet hours of the morning or in a moment of self indulgence. It is one that provides elevating insights into the human body and brain and one man’s refusal to give up on paradigm shift thinking on addiction. It is an endorphin rush. It entertains, informs, educates and surprises. It is clear to me is book will occupy a special place in my library. The next prize for me is to get in signed by the great Professor himself. You will read this book again and again. Savour every word. I hope this book compounds the existing global recognition Prof Gillman as a pioneering author and scientist has achieved. He is our own Keats’ Cortez who looks on the world with eagle eyes: a worthy read, a worthy subject, a worthy man and a worthy accolade for a great mind.

Self-indulgent rubbish and boring as hell

How the brain controls all pleasures including sex, food, rock ‘n roll and othersSome years ago, I read and enjoyed Professor Gillman’s book on scientific envy and believing that it was an important contribution to our general understanding of this negative and much hidden human emotion. Indeed Gillman's analysis of Envy is an essential read for all those trying to understand the machinations of scientists, particularly in this modern era where the temptations and forces encouraging wrong-doing and corrupt scientific behaviour are now widespread. Professor Gillman is both an erudite scholar and scientist and I was therefore very keen to read his new book on human pleasure, which is also a 'scientific memoir ' and testimony to a very rich and productive scientific life. I am sure all those scholars and scientists interested in fundamental understanding and ideas will enjoy this book. Like his Envy as a Retarding Force in Science the current book is equally well written and packed with readily accessible material on the latest neuroscientific discoveries on human pleasure and how it is controlled by the human brain. Knowing his scientific expertise and interest in the miseries of addiction, I must admit to surprise at his current choice of subject. The mystery was soon solved by the introductory chapter, which reveals why the book was conceived. Before reading it, I had no idea that he and colleagues were the first neuroscientists to identify the physiological link between pain and pleasure. But then as I read the book I took some of his advice and had Beethoven's Symphony No. 5 playing gently in the background, which enhanced my understanding of Gillman's ideas on the mechanisms and evolution of human pleasure.Anyone who is interested, in widely disparate concepts such as why the most important sex organ lies between our ears and how we enjoy chocolate will be fascinated by reading this readily accessible book. I can heartily recommend it to any intelligent layman, biologists, doctor, indeed anyone, who wants to keep abreast of the latest scientific findings on the mysteries of pleasure and why it is so central to our lives and survival as a species.Ted SteeleAugust 17 2017Edward J Steele PhDMolecular Immunology & EvolutionAuthor of Lamarcks Signature Allen & Unwin, Sydney 1998 .

It explains in clear, uncluttered terms one of the chief motivators of human behaviour – pleasure. The book, written by someone who has contributed to our understanding of the pleasure brain, will appeal to everyday people and others, including health professionals. It is also a book that should encourage the pharmaceutical manufacturers to have a close look at their industry. I for one, found the subject so absorbing, and the writing style so clear, that I could not put the book down. A must read for everyone who wants to better understand their own and others behaviour.

Excellent read! Fascinating insights from a genius in his field.

First half of the book talks about the science of it, so if you have no interest in that just skip the the second half which speaks to the simple habits she recommends you adopt to sort of reset your brain and thus your moods and outlooks. I'm glad its so simple, as I had concern that this was all going to be one of those books that asked for extraordinary and complicated methods like so many other books. Instead I'm just adjusting my old habits to a new set of habits..

Habits of a Happy Brain is a profoundly simple, but breakthrough approach to describing daily experience and mapping it to the cocktail of neurotransmitters being released. By knowing exactly which behavior or thinking pattern releases serotonin, endorphins, dopamine, and oxytocin, we have power over our own experience. I hope that this book spurs on other research to describe other phenomena like Jealousy, malaise, boredom etc.. and a mental technology to diffuse negative states to quickly recover into a positive frame. Here are some gold nuggets from the book:Dopamine rewards you for the effort of steps toward your needs. You can stimulate the joy of dopamine by taking steps toward a goal.Oxytocin rewards you for finding the safety of social support. You can stimulate the pleasure of oxytocin with small acts of trust.Serotonin rewards you for getting respect from others. You can stimulate the pleasure of serotonin by finding the good in what you have.Endorphins rewards you for action that relieves pain. You can enjoy endorphin through laughter and exercise. This book truly is a leg up to understand yourself better as well as a gift for those who truly aspire to self mastery and positive fulfillment.

Without question, Loretta Breuning's book, chock full of explanations, research, ideas, and stories, is helping me change my life. She gives concrete examples of HOW to feel better. Her articulate explanations and stories are so easy to understand and relate to and then chapter by chapter, Breuning gives exercises and new behaviors to experiment with. For me, as someone who feels "bad" moods sometimes come out of "thin air," other people's irritating behavior is often a total roadblock, and "good" moods are elusive, this book has turned out to be a true LIFE-CHANGER!I can see where this yucky stuff is coming from... our own chemistry!!... and because of the understanding and the tools this book offers, I can actually make the changes to feel happier more, and deal more lightly and a bit more easily with the bad, and often scary, feelings.THANK YOU LORETTA!!!!

I was less than happy with this book. Although it did describe the different ways that your brain gets happy, it really was less than satisfactory in telling how to help your brain get happy in those ways, especially in regards to seratonin. There was a lot of repetition. When I finished the book, I still felt like I needed more information. It is good for a for a general introduction to the different things that affect your brain, but if you are looking for a way to move forward, this may not be your best choice. On the other hand, I haven't found anything better, so maybe I am looking for something that doesn't exist.

This is a great book! Finally, an explanation for why I tend to go back to habits of dealing with emotions that I learned in my early adolescence, and why those tendencies really never go away. I have used the things that I learned in this book to help with weight loss. It has been so helpful and uplifting to have an explanation of how my emotions work, and how I can work with my brain chemistry rather than feeling like a victim of it.

This is a fairly light read full of wisdom and powerful insights that explains the main neurotransmitters that affect us day-to-day. It is helpful for getting clear on the different neurotransmitters and how they show up in our lives in a simple and basic way. In some cases it is a little over-simplified, but this is a welcome trade-off for making the ideas easy to understand. At first I rated this 4 stars because I glossed past some of the concepts thinking they were overly simple, but this is what comes from someone who really understands that material, and in-fact they really work.

This book is for those who must understand "how" and "why" before they can be convinced to do something. Most people want to read about what to do to solve a problem; they are not interested in learning all about four brain chemicals' influences to our behavior in gritty details. This book is for those who must know the neural science behind it.Everything makes sense in evolution's stand point. when an idea makes sense to me, I can do it. I learned how to look at my day and generate some happy chemicals in my brain to improve my life.If you are one who wants to know why before knowing how to be happier, this book's for you.

Well respected researchers argue that to be great at anything is to learn and master the art of deliberate practice. Skills are learned directly or stumbled upon. I was fortunate to stumble upon Happy Habits in my quest to answer what fuels how we operate and why. The answers are in this amazing book. If you are committed to being a learn it all versus a know it all, indulge and then pay it forward. Thank you Dr. Breuning for your relentless search to the answers of thought provoking questions.

This was the required material for my Operating Systems class. At first I didn't think much of the book as the first chapter was not particularly helpful. However, the later chapters are very good and contain a lot of good information on the overall implementation of the FreeBSD operating system. Having finished my Operating Systems class, I can say that this book was a great help.I also think that its value extends past being a book on the FreeBSD Operating System. The kind of topics the book covers can be applied to other operating systems. It's actually one of the few textbooks that I fully intend to keep on my shelf.

If you're considering purchasing this book, then you probably don't need my input. You know what this is, and why you should get it. You also know that the new edition has landed.

In depth book for FreeBSD developers

This book is helping me get more familiar with the internals of the kernel. Great book, I would buy it again.

Not only clearly delineates the design of FreeBSD itself, but also helps the reader understand how operating systems have changed in response to the demands imposed by networked file systems and multi-cpu hardware.A must have.

anyone from Syracuse University Computer Science Department knew you cannot escape from it since Prof Chapin is still teaching OS .

A very good book for those who want to learn advanced concepts in OS. Since it is a open source the book is very useful in understanding how they look like. The paper quality is too good, which makes u read non stop. i luv reading this book. Price worth it. A good buy.

This book was extremely difficult to read. The way that the book first describes a kernel, for example, is a part of the system that runs in protected mode. It's like when defining what a fish is, you say that it lives in the water and has got fins, instead of actually telling me what it IS. This book might be decent if you actually already know operating systems, but for someone to use it in a classroom is just cruel. Even my own OS professor said that when he had to use this book in college, he hurled it against the wall because it was so difficult to read (and why he would subject his students to the same torture is beyond me).Operating systems in itself is not a difficult subject to learn; the trick is knowing definitions and where things are in an operating system. I ended up giving up reading on this book in favor of Wikipedia. To those of you who want to study operating systems on your own, I would strongly recommend against this book, as it would discourage most people. To those who had to buy this book for a class, I feel for you. My recommendation is: WIKIPEDIA. I studied off Wikipedia to understand general concepts (using the professor's lecture slides as guidelines to understand the scope of the class), and I ended up getting an A+ in the class.
