Really enjoyed the plot of this one. While not as enjoyable as Summer Knight, it definitely beats the Book right before it. Dresden dealing with three crazy necromancers vying for godlike power? I love it.On the other hand, I did feel like this book missed many chances to establish its villains better. While the Dresden Files are at their best even dealing with eldritch powers outside of human ken, this time the villains were human. I would have liked to see them more like people, especially Cowl, before the end. I feel like it would have given the ending more power.However, I really enjoyed this one and would recommend it.One final note - As these books go on, they're becoming more and more self-referential. Long passages are spent describing events from previous books. I understand that the author included these for first-time readers, but the summaries are getting a little frustrating. I hope he tones them down a little soon.

And in 'Death Masks', Harry is exposed unwittingly to a Denarian--one of the thirty pieces of silver given long ago to Judas. This exposure has caused the demon Lasciel to inhabit Harry's sub-conscious, and by the seventh installment the beautiful Lasciel is proving to be one heck of a temptress. In grand Dresden Files fashion, Harry always has a quip at the ready; he may be facing a powerful necromancer commanding an army of zombies, but he's never going to take matters seriously. Author Jim Butcher has a knack for penning an exciting action tale while never taking his foot off the gas; DEAD BEAT moves like running barefoot on a sidewalk in August. It's been almost six months since I read the last Dresden Files book and I was left wondering why I'd waited so long. These books are truly extraordinary, with strong characters, a compelling mystery, and enough action for four books. Here, the evil vampire Mavra blackmails Harry into finding a book of black magic for her. There follows hunting for clues and battles with necromancers, aided by his brother Thomas, Butters the coroner, his werewolf friends, and a fallen angel. At every turn, just when you think things couldn't get any worse for Harry, things turn even grimmer. Even when he seems to have finally met a nice girl she turns out to be his worst temptation.. The final battle was amazing! It certainly won't be another six months before I read the next installment.

In German, the books title should have been "Die Lieder des Erlkönings" (Lieder in plural, there were more than one). Surely you know some one who has one gradeschool years of German? Or you could afford a translator for a four word sentence?Apparently not. The plural of Wolf is Wölfe. In chapter 27 DIE Erlking is mentioned. Singular, nominative, feminin. I Wonder that the Erlköning let Harry live.And we have "The word by Heinrich Kemmeler". Harry reads it. And the you realize that it would probably have been in German. But instead of going back and fix this in some belivable way, you just say that Lasciel translated it. Really? She was caged right then.Otherwise, I recommend this, one of the better ones.Oh, the book? " Das Wort, von Heinrich Kemmeler".

I'm old. And I've read thousands of books. This is the best series of its kind. It keeps me up reading. It has me reaching for my kindle when I get up. I made my husband drive the car so I can read. If I'm awake, the phone (kindle) is in my hand or nearby. Nothing gets me upset. I'm too into the series to waste psychic energy or any other kind of energy when I could be reading. Seriously good writing. Lots of humor that has me chuckling along. Increasingly complex and thoroughly believably plot. Butcher doesn't think obtuse is necessary for complex plotting. And when the writing is this good, there is NO NEED for obtuse. I think I'm in love. And I'm not halfway through the series. YES!

As a owner of the 1st edition of Trading for a Living I was pleasantly surprised to see that the second edition is significantly revised and updated both with strategies and performance data. The mean reversion strategy as described sounds intriguing. Generally, the main reason I like the Dr. Carr's book (as well as all his previous books that I also own) is clear and concise but still detailed descriptions of trading setups and stock scans such as it is possible to start trading almost immediately. I give 4-star for this book because of poor quality of figures.

Dr. Carr’s ‘Trend Trading for a Living’ is a comprehensive guideline for anyone whose goal is to trade full-time eventually. It covers the basics of trading, technical analysis, psychology, strategies and risk management. Each strategy thoroughly covers how to build a scan in order to identify candidate stocks, example(s) and performance data based on five years of backtest. One can start by getting acquainted to one or two of these strategies based on what resonates more. Also in this book Dr. Carr takes us along his own trading journey which keeps the reading more real and organic. I think another advantage of this book is that the support can extend beyond this book by the subscription services offered (DrStoxx.com) which helps to see the application and performance of the trading process discussed in this book in the current market. I find this book comprehensive, clear, and actionable.

Dr. Carr is philosopher turned trader with practical recommendations on how to play price movements and read charts whole taking advantage of underlying fundamentals and sentiment. I enjoyed digging into his methodology and genuinely enjoyed the back testing of strategies suggested as proof points. While it's not a beginner's book in my view, it's certainly worth picking up to advance your knowledge of trading a strategies for limiting risks while generating big upside alpha.

I have been been trading stocks, Options, and Futures, since a very young man, and now at age 80 I still trade options with my wife. What I really like about Dr. Carrs books: Trend trading for a Living Ed. One, and this new one, Ed. Two, is that he has a way of giving you a series of Trading Plans, each one is different in that it fits different personalities so that almost any one can find a system that they like to trade. Once you find the one that you feel is "YOU', so to say, you open that chapter and he will go into it with great detail with examples so that almost any one can grasp the "How To" part and start trading the next day.The next reason I give this book 5 stars is that it does not leave the previous book completely in the DUST, but allows you to create a 2 or three book library, and even the first edition, written in 2010, and it attempted to cover different markets in the precious 10 years to when that book was written ...and since Markets repeats them Selves in slightly different forms, … and he did the same thing in this new book ... giving you a library of different markets, complete with a trading plan for each kind of mkt. … so the books are never out dated and valuable to you for years to come. If you feel more comfortable you can subscribe to his trading plans, ... which I plan to do as I am so busy (still work in my practice 7 days a week) and his systems are so varied, … that I feel comfortable to pick one that fits my style. Before I give any one five thumbs up, when I write a review, I picked up the new book and looked for some thing I might do to suggest how to make it even better, … and all I can come up with is that I would have liked to have a current up date on the systems that were in the first edition, "up dated in the current time frame" as I fell in love with and never got to trade it (too busy, one of the systems in ED one ) and a brief up date in 2019 would have been appreciated, however, that said, it is not enough to down grade and this is still a five star review.

Clear, concise and inspirational for all ages of traders. Being a young trader I was looking for a book to help me develop a system I can put into practice to help me understand and get consistent returns in the market. Dr. Carr is very clear and provides great overall advice on how to approach life as a trader and how to get your edge in the market.

My first question on seeing this book was, is it going to be as successful and thought-provoking as Carr's previous book The Shallows? The answer is an unequivocal, "yes!"If you've not read The Shallows I recommend that you consider reading it first because many of the thoughts and ideas from it are continued, developed and extended in The Glass Cage. It's not a necessary prerequisite but it would enhance your appreciation of Carr's arguments.Carr's central thesis can be summed up in a quote often attributed to Marshall McLuhan, "we shape our tools, and thereafter our tools shape us."Carr's point, which he develops with many intriguing examples ranging from airline pilots, through doctors, photographers, architects, and even to farmers, is that this Faustian pact with technology comes at a cost. The cost, in Carr's view, is a loss of direct, experiential, formative contact with our work. The consequences of this slow loss of familiarity and connection with our work are subtle, insidious and will only increase while we follow this technocentric approach to automation.Carr is excellent at making his case. Most of his examples are familiar and those that less so, such as the automation of legal and medical opinions are interesting in that they affect us all.I felt that where Carr was less strong was in proposing solutions to the problems he raises. He works hard at explaining an alternative vision calling on the poetry of Robert Frost's as a springboard to a more humanistic approach to developing tools, but it is hard work selling an alternative to the easy, convenient future that so many of us seem to crave.Ultimately it may be that Carr's biggest contribution will not be to single-handedly derail the future that Google, Apple, and Amazon wish to sell us, an exceedingly unlikely outcome, but to at least make us aware that there is a choice that we are making when we choose the frictionless path to the future, and that we should carefully consider that choice before we make it.

This is an important read. What happened in the airlines - the excessive automation killing the Pilots' skills, what is happening in Doctors' offices - (the device getting more attention of the Doctor than the patient) are worth knowing about. The latest Gartner report suggests disappearance of 6% of jobs by 2020 - just 4 years down the line. Yet, the politicians are busy promising millions of jobs if they are elected! The great divisiveness that is driving the public discourse, really serious loss of good paying jobs to Americans (irrespective of color) that has created desperation, and the relentless march of technology. Smart Meters take away meter reading jobs, no one needs to come to your doors to read your meter, or turn off the power (read - loss of jobs), Newspapers stop printing (read - loss of jobs), driverless vehicles hitting the roads (who needs MVA, who needs insurance, who needs highway police ---- read loss of jobs), and disappearing social safety net, increasing disparity. Time for a rapid reaction to avoid a broad social turmoil.

I was familiar with Nicholas Carr having read his book "The Shallows", a commentary on the effects on the Internet on the actual functioning and physical structure of the human brain. I found that book to be excellent - this one is, I feel, even better. Carr is remarkably thorough in the research he conducts, as attested to by the lengthy notes and references at the end of each book. His ability to write remarkably meaty yet easy to read pages is but a bonus in his analysis of the effects of automation on we humans faced with interacting with modern computerized/robotic technology, particularly in the workplace. He clearly feels there is considerable dehumanization possible, but does so in a style of oscillation back and forth between lionizing and demonizing technological advances. He gives the reader's brain the encouragement to see the whole picture, to think broadly and with a humanistic focus throughout. His weaving in of the opinions of numerous writers and poets displays this in the impressive manner of a Renaissance man. This should be required reading particularly by those enamored of technological advances as ends unto themselves.

When people think about and judge technology, they rarely consider its unintended consequences, particularly the way that it unknowingly changes our thinking, values, and behavior. In "The Glass Cage", Nicholas Carr adds to the growing literature that seeks to draw our attention to what we gain and lose in adopting technology. Far from being a Luddite, Carr (Like Neil Postman, Sherry Turkle, and many others) want us to THINK about what we gain and lose with any technology, and then make better decisions. Only in doing such thinking, and overtly deciding if, when, and how to use any technology, will humans really use technology rather than, in the words of Postman, let it use us. This book, like Carr's “The Shallows” should be widely read and deeply thought about.

About the Author

Fred Lutgens and Ed Tarbuck have been good friends and colleagues since 1970.  Between them, they have more than 57 years of experience teaching geology to undergraduates, and both have been recognized with awards as excellent and inspiring professors.  They share a special interest in introducing geology to beginning students and a belief in the value of field experiences for students of all levels. Lutgens and Tarbuck published their first college text, Earth Science, in 1976.  That book, winner of the McGuffy Award from the Text and Academic Authors Association, is now going into its tenth edition.  In 1983, as the first edition of Earth was being prepared, gifted geology illustrator Dennis Tasa joined the author team.  Since then the three have collaborated on more than twenty projects.  Not only do Tarbuck, Lutgens, and Tasa work well together creatively; they also enjoy spending time in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains near Tasa’s New Mexico studio. Tarbuck enjoys downhill skiing in Colorado, fly fishing near his childhood home in Northern Minnesota, and spending time in the Cascades.  Lutgens is an avid runner, and when he can make the time, truly enjoys hiking the canyons of the Colorado Plateau.  Although Lutgens and Tarbuck think alike on many issues, they don’t agree on everything.  Lutgens is devoted to jazz and classical music, whereas Tarbuck prefers pop artists or a good country station.

As a paleontologist I can say that this is a really good introductory geology college level textbook. My one star rank only applies to the Kindle version, which is very difficult to read. Amazon says the Kindle 11th edition was "Published April 9, 2018" but the print version of the 11th edition states a 2012 copyright.The Kindle version appears to be series of whole page .gif images. Each page displays showing tiny text, so you have to enlarge the entire displayed page, one page at a time, and slide the page left/right and up/down in order to read anything. This can be done on, I think, all Kindles phones and PC Kindle readers, but the process is very cumbersome. You cannot do any of the usual Kindle manipulations such as changing fonts, or font size or line spacing or words per line. Text to speech doesn't work. You can't look up individual words in the Kindle dictionary. No underlining or highlighting part of the text. You can't search the book for particular words or phrases. You can make bookmarks and notes but these only link to entire book pages. The inability to just press "next page" to read and read and read without having to do all sorts of complex maneuvering will make the Kindle version useless to many students.The $10 price to buy or free for kindleunlimited prices are real bargains if you don't mind loosing the ability to do most the usual Kindle stuff with the text.

As a student in my first geology course, I find this book amazingly helpful. It is laid out well, the material interestingly presented, the writing style clear and concise. Technical terms are explained and concepts unpacked carefully. Best of all, the author tells the reader what to look for and reviews with "concept checks" the material as it is being read. The chapter reviews at the end are quite well done. My only suggestions would be to vary the order of the material. The chapter of plate tectonics, for example, would be better much earlier on, since much of the material depends on the concepts dealt with there. And there are a few places where technical terms that are not universally used (a problem in geology in general) could be identified with other equivalent terms that the student will encounter elsewhere. If this is in fact the case, I have not yet found out where and how it is done. Overall, an excellent text. I have the Kindle version, which works fantastically.

This book, with over 500 pages of text, is an excellent reference for all things related to geology. It's loaded with excellent graphics: charts, illustrations, pictures, graphs, all enhancing the rich and detailed text. Everything about geology is covered, from the formation and internal structure of the earth to the various rock types that make up the surface of our planet and much, much more. Erosion, weathering, glaciation, earthquakes, volcanoes, it's all included. Geology is all around us and the authors make the subject interesting, understandable, and very readable. This book will greatly enhance the knowledge of anybody who's interested in our planet.

I took Geology 101 using this older edition even tho my class was using the 12th ed. The sub-sections inside a chapter are numbered in the newer edition but not in this one. I finished the class with no problem though :) In most chapters, the contents are very much the same!Pleasantly surprised to find an ebook access code in it, it allowed me to read either 11th or 12th edition online -- Yay!

I obtained this book through the Amazon student textbook rental program. I was panicking since my school did not have any copies left, but lo and behold, I found this copy PRIME on Amazon. (Long live Amazon!). It arrived within the requisite two days, and is in outstanding condition - no marks, bent pages, etc.The subject itself is actually more fascinating than I anticipated. I'm taking the class simply to satisfy a lab credit, but I've found that I'm actually becoming engrossed in some of the science behind rock formations and the development of our planet. The pictures are clear, and relevant, and the diagrams are very helpful. I've found that by writing out the questions at the beginning of each chapter and answering them as I read, I am developing a better comprehension and interest in the subject.

Good textbook. Helped convey the teachers lessons and provided great insight into real world scenarios. Highly recommend the loose leaf version. Easier to pull the glossary and take sections out for copying.

It's a college book.

Horrendous adaption for Kindle. Functionally unusable. Graphics don’t appear, text is out of order. Terrible.
