Review

“With the scrupulous intelligence and meditative intensity that define all this author’s work . . . . Mr. Wideman’s explicit subject is racial injustice but his treatment of it quietly deepens into existential horror. . . . This, then, is not a book for the unwary. Mr. Wideman possesses a true and terrible vision of the tragic.” —Wall Street Journal"A powerful assemblage of short stories exploring late-in-life angst through personal myth, cultural memory, and riffs on an empire scorched by its own hubris ... His prose, its twisting suntax, is a kind of stylish jazz of his own making." —O Magazine"Wideman's 50-year writing career has won him countless awards, and the author proves his continued vitality, reimagining historical figures with vigor and soul." —Entertainment Weekly"Race and its reverberations are at the core of this slim, powerful volume, a blend of fiction, memoir, and reimagined history, in which the boundaries between those forms are murky and ever shifting." —Boston Globe"John Edgar Wideman's latest book feels like a coda to his impressive body of work. He deftly incorporates a range of black names from the 20th century — Emmett Till, Jean-Michel Basquiat — in his riffs, then plunges deeper into history." —Seattle Times"John Edgar Wideman has established himself as one of the country's most formally inventive writers ... an important addition to Mr. Wideman’s body of writing and a remarkable demonstration of his ability to address social issues through a range of fictional forms and styles." —Pittsburgh Post-Gazette"Wideman . . . boldly subverts what a short story can be in this wonderful collection. . . . Each story feels new, challenging, and exhilarating, beguilingly combining American history with personal history." —Publishers Weekly, starred review"Linked by astringent wit, audacious invention, and a dry sensibility whose owner has for decades wrestled with what he describes as “the puzzle of how and why and where and who we come from." Wideman’s recent work strides into the gap between fiction and nonfiction as a means of disclosing hard, painful, and necessary truths. —Kirkus, starred review"Wideman’s shape-shifting, lyrical narratives offer mesmerizing and challenging perspectives on the creative process and the black experience, decisively affirming his stature as a major voice in American literature." —Booklist, starred review

Mr. Wideman is a capable writer but this book of stories has a writing style that is hard to follow as it seems choppy and seems to lack continuity. The stories consist of separate paragraphs, some of which are related and other paragraphs unrelated. Paragraphs marked by large spaces between them.

I received a free Kindle copy of American Histories by John Edgar Wideman courtesy of Net Galley and Simon and Schuster, the publisher. It was with the understanding that I would post a review on Net Galley, Goodreads, Amazon, Barnes and Noble and my fiction book review blog. I also posted it to my Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Google Plus pages.I requested this book due to the description given on Net Galley. It sounded interesting and compelling. It is the first book by John Edgar Wideman that I have read.I had very high hopes for this book after reading the description and reviews of other books by the author. Unfortunately, I found this book a struggle to read due to the author's style of writing. The book itself is a series of short stories dealing with the struggles and challenges of African Americans. These are stories that need to be told, but a more consisent and readable approach is needed. As other reviewers have rated this book highly, I will not not recommend this book, but suggest that you get if from your local library before making a purchase decision.

In American Histories, Wideman brilliantly exploits a “threefold ordering of times”, offering the reader a story in the time of its narrator, the time in which the narrative takes place, and in historical time.In the first story of American Histories, John Brown and Frederick Douglass debate the morality and tactics of a slave uprising. Both men are willing to give their lives, and deaths to end slavery. Wideman narrates the debate in the voices of Brown, Douglass, a modern storyteller, and strikingly, a “colored John Brown”, all living the legacy of JB and FD.In other stories, Wideman remembers his dead family, tells a hall of mirrors story of watchers watching watchers watching, and a greek tragedy of murdered and murderers.

I have mixed feelings about this book. Some of the stories are fascinating and well done while others I found hard to get into. But any history lover will enjoy reading it.

Stories in Stone: A Field Guide to Cemetery Symbolism and Iconography

From the Inside Flap

Stories in Stone The Complete Illustrated Guide to Cemetery Symbolism The language of symbols is one that has been with us from the beginning of recorded history. Our everyday life is full of symbols. We see many of them when we are driving: arrows point us in the right direction, upside-down pyramids tell us of slow-moving vehicles, and octagons caution us to stop. There are multitudes of business symbols we encounter everyday: a stylized pair of golden arches indicates there's a McDonald's restaurant located nearby; a checkmark called a "swoosh" subtly informs that its owner is wearing a Nike product; a polychrome apple with a bite taken out of it whimsically announces that its product is an Apple computer; a storefront displaying a symbol of three balls shows that its business is a pawn shop. The meaning of most symbols has remained fairly consistent through the centuries: crosses for Christians, six-pointed stars for Jews, the yin-yang symbol for Buddhists-and hearts speak of love, lambs of innocence, and circles of completeness and immortality. But, nowhere is the language of symbols more apparent than in cemeteries. Dead men may tell no tales, but their tombstones do. Besides informing us of people's names and dates of birth and death, tombstones often tell us what religion they affilated with, what ethnicity they descended from, what clubs and organizations they belonged to, what occupations they worked in, and what thoughts they held on the afterlife. Journey with us now into the little-known world of cemeteries. The author provides fascinating information and stunning full-color and black-and-white images of funerary architecture designed for eternal life, from mausoleums, chapels, and offices, to tombs, sculptures, and memorials. He then draws us into the very personal area of stone relics designed especially for the deceased, from likenesses of plants, animals, mankind, and mortality, to icons of religion, societies, clubs, and final impressions of how the occupant wanted to be remembered.

Need something to do? Grab this book and head towards the cemetery! Being more than just a final resting place, cemeteries offer so much more for the living than just a place to visit our dearly departed. There is so much history and symbolism in cemeteries and I can't think of a better tribute to those who lie beneath the stones than taking the time to understand who they were. Hanging out in a cemetery isn't creepy, it's a learning experience. This book is the perfect size and the photos and research really show the authors passion for this subject.

After a trip to the Bonaventure Cemetery in Savannah Georgia, I was interested in learning more about the meaning of cemetery gravestones and symbols. For instance, I had heard that a tree with the limbs cut off mean that a child has preceded the parent in death. I was interested in learning more and was looking for a reference book. This book is called a field guide and is very interesting and easy to reference if you're looking for something in particular. I would highly recommend it!

The most thorough guide I've found yet, with plentiful CLEAR illustrations (photos) and a complete explanation of those mysterious letters and symbols found on old headstones. I keep this book in my car, as I will pull off the road and park the car to explore any old cemetery or churchyard I come across. The small size makes it easy to tuck into a purse or backpack. Lots of great photos; a couple of them taken in Mountain View Cemetery in Oakland, CA, which is just up the street from my house. If you enjoy wandering around in the park-like atmosphere of old cemeteries, admiring the stonework, and are curious as to why those upside-down torches are so common on mausoleums, get this book--you'll be glad you did!

This is a fascinating book. I wish I lived in an area with old cemeteries so I could take up the hobby of reading old headstones, some of which can really tell a lot about who is buried there. If I lived in New England, or England for that matter, I'd keep this book in my car and whenever I found a likely cemetery I'd go inside and read the messages from the past. This book is enjoyable for anyone.

STORIES IN STONE; A Field Guide to Cemetery Symbolism and Iconography by Douglas Kaiser is a unique compilation of funeral art, symbolism, and architecture that will amaze any reader. This is actually a very good and informative reference book that not only teaches but, magnifies and helps to unravel the mysteries of symbolism and, its impact upon man at his most fearful hour.Regardless of any prior negative comments or reviews, the author has done an extremely good job of laying out concise information by categorizing various elements and facets of this unique topic. Not only is this a book on funeral art and symbolism, but... it is also a book filled with numerous historical snippets' that the student of history will never find in any boring text.Walking through old cemeteries can be a humbling and reflective time for each of us. A meditative stroll through any "Gardens of Stone" will become even more meaningful if, you can just... carry this book along with you.I believe this is to be a superb book for...a superb price!

I have used in in my trips to cemeteries. And was just interesting to read. Pictures are great and the explanations are very good. Best book on iconography I have ever gotten.

My husband and I love cemeteries!! We relish going through old unknown cemeteries. The older the better!!Very informative and very interesting. This book adds perfectly to our collection.

I read this book when I worked in the cemetery I got to recognize all the old signs that were up chiseled on the gravestones very interesting

This is a fabulous little book for anyone interested in the meaning of symbols on gravestones. It is exquisitely produced with glossy pages and superb photos. The size is such that you could carry in your pocket to a graveyard, but it is too nice to take outside. It is very well written and explains the meaning of symbols in an understandable manner. Unlike most gravestone books, it has a welcome touch of humor on some conventional beliefs but in a respectful manner to all religions. If possible, I would give this ten stars except for the fact that there is only very brief coverage of the symbolism on seventeenth and eighteenth century New England gravestones. While the illustrations of monuments in Italy are beautiful and interesting, more on the early gravestones of America and how they evolved would be much more useful to those of us not likely to get to Italy. Despite this omission, the book is useful for the US cemeteries from the nineteenth century on.
