Review

Review from Old Cars Weekly, 25th October 2007 - US magazine -Circulation: 67,500Stop shopping and start researching your next Mercedes-Benz 230, 250 or 280SL purchase with Chris Bass' Essential Buyer's Guide. The author tells the vital stats, including how much space these cars take up, who can fit in it, its running costs, parts availability and investment potential; how they drive; problem areas; and areas to watch for when looking for an authentic example. At $19.95, this book is an extremely wise investment. When ordering, ask if Veloce has an Essential Buyer's Guide for your car of interest.Mercedes Enthusiast, July 2007-UK magazineHELP IS AT HAND – Classic car assessment is made all the easierLooking at buying a classic Mercedes but unsure how to sidestep the pitfalls? There are two new books that might help you if Pagodas and 107-series coupés and roadsters are your cars of choice.Published by Veloce, 'The Essential Buyer's Guide: Mercedes-Benz 'Pagoda' 230,250 and 280SL' and 'Mercedes-Benz 280-560SL and SLC', both by Mercedes-Benz Club gazette editor Chris Bass, draw on years of accumulated experience to steer would-be owners onto the right path.Small enough to carry around, these books give a clear, detailed and realistic account of all aspects of buying, ownership and restoration. So at just $19.95 each they are good value for the money.Mercedes Benz Club gazette, August 2007-UKOur very own Chris Bass has written both these pocket or glovebox size guides and by his own admission has relied very heavily on the late Roger Edwards, particularly for the Pagoda volume. We are sure Roger would have been pleased with the results and for those who knew him it is easy to imagine his dulcet tones coming out with some of the phrases Chris has seen fit to use.The objective of this series is to have a 'marque expert by your side' and each edition (not just for Mercedes) is full of advice about running costs, paperwork, important statistics and even valuation.Conveniently divided into 17 small sections, which include technical advice, the format inevitably means there is some repetition of sections of text in each Mercedes-Benz book, and there is also great similarity between the two volumes. The content is extremely useful and would appeal to both the novice and the experienced enthusiast alike and there are many pointers that would help a potential buyer to identify whether a particular car is genuine or not. A buyer armed with one of these books might also help put off any seller that is in any way underhand. Both volumes are well illustrated with useful photographs although the Pagoda version has more large photographs than that for the R107 and consequently some of the detail is lost. The text is clear and concise in each case and Chris Bass has obviously put considerable thought into the precise wording to avoid ambiguity. As Pagoda owners for some years, even we found some useful information so we would certainly expect these volumes to have wide appeal. To conclude, they make interesting but light reading and are a useful library addition to anybody interested in purchasing one of these SLs or to existing owners.Mark Holman for New Zealand Classic Car, October 2007NZ magazineAs with previous books from this series, these are 64-page soft-cover books, small enough to fit into a coat pocket and pretty well guaranteed to come in very handy if you are buying any of these cars from very different ends of the classic scale. All follow a similar layout, starting with 'is it the right car for you?', and then going through the 15-minute quick check (walk away or not?) followed by a very detailed checklist which you can use to 'mark' the car, and what to look out for on a test drive. There are also chapters on whether you want to restore a model, paint problems, things to watch out for if the car has had little recent use, and lists of clubs and spares specialists. The books are well-illustrated, and the advice looks really practical. They don't pretend that classic car ownership is easy, or necessary profitable in purely financial terms, yet they are clearly written by guys who are enthusiastic about the pleasure you can get from a good example of any of these cars. While I have never been in the market for them, I would want to have one of these books if I were – definitely recommended.

Perfunctory and extremely superficial book that could be written about almost any vehicle and provides very little specific knowledge to a potential purchaser of the Mercedes sl-class. It misses the most major points a potential purchaser should examine, is slim on proprietary info relevant to the car, and needs more SL facts, and is basically a photo book that could instead be marketed to 16 year olds with generalized advice on how to buy a used car. If you are serious about buying a Pagoda, skip this book completely. It doesn't even rank well as a photo book vs others available.A 10 minute Google search will provide you much more buying information than this book ever could. Don't waste your money.

After I received this book I realized I had seen others in the series in the past and was disappointed. If you have never engaged in classic cars and are just beginning , then this series may be for you. It covers the full range of items one should consider and should be valuable to the beginner. For more experienced collectors, this will be a disappointment as only the most elementary info is given. I was considering a MB 280 sl when I bought it but found small help in this volume.

It's a nice book, but I had ordered the wrong one. I'll keep it.

Excellent small guide for those who want to know more about these Pagoda classic Benzes. The author has covered all aspects and mechanical issues of concern.

Knowledge is power. This little book will make you a better Pagoda buyer and might even save you money in the long run.

I love this book

Very practical and helpful!

The 113 'Pagoda' models are growing in popularity and value making all books on the subject more important than ever. Books dedicated to the 113 aren't available in large numbers and so far, this is the only model-specific 'guide' extant.Unfortunately it is a book from the UK, a place where a good number of these cars have dissolved like Alka Seltzer tablet due to rust. This is the main focus of the book, though important, not the least of what you should know about an SL. Yes, there is more than rust prone areas discussed here but not much more. This is a small book and alot has been left out. There are Mercedes Benz buyers guides out there and most have tons more info on the 113. Also the excellent 'Original Mercedes SL' is a great book for the buyer-to-be even though it also covers the 190 and 300 SL's it is still, the best book on these cars and the only one that is detailed enough to discuss things like color codes. That book is out of print and getting expensive but in this case, 'original SL' is worth it and 'Mercedes Benz Pagoda' is not.

#47,082 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I've been reading Feist's Magician novels for some 20 years now, starting from a chance introduction from a college friend during a lazy summer day while looking for something to pass my time. Feist is definitely among my favorite authors. I enjoyed Rise of a Merchant Prince along with the rest of the Serpent War Saga.My review is with respect to the quality of its e-book digitalization. As I've been working overseas for many years, without access to my print library of Feist's work, I decided to purchase the Kindle Editions for a nostalgic re-read (downloaded Nov 2015). I have to say that I've been somewhat disappointed with the product received. Many subsections are not formatted correctly with paragraphs concatonated and sections merged together. If I wasn't already familiar with the story, it could lead to some confusion. In one particular section, notably when Roo approaches Erik for a loan, minor continuity details of the exchange with the Duke have been omitted. Overall it's as if the person(s) responsible for digitalization and editing haven't read the story before or proofed the work for continuity before release. It's a shame that the digitalization was so poorly completed; it detracted from my ability to enjoy the story again.Should the publisher update the editing, I will likewise be happy to update my review.

I'm enjoying the book and series and would rate this 5 stars is it wasn't for the terrible editing of the Kindle edition. My word is it bad. There are typos everywhere and paragraphs that should not flow directly into each other do. For example, two separate section of the story but in the same chapter that should be separated by a line break but are not. It's jarring and takes me out of the story. Far enough out that I've stopped reading to make this complaint. It's like the publisher just slapped a paperback on the scanner and sent it off to Amazon without proofing it first.

I've always thought this book stood out as a little different. Some people might argue that it is really unneeded as it doesn't advance the plot of the Serpent War much. However, I like the more personal story of Rio and his rise to wealth. It gives a different perspective of the world, that you wouldn't see in most fantasy settings. The Kindle edition could do with some editing as you go from one sentence talking about Roo, to the next talking about Calis on the other side of the world with no page breaks.

I love the Serpentwar saga, but this ebook is terribly formatted. Any non-chapter transition is lost. The usual visual indicators... font changes, spacing... are completely absent, leading to a jarring and confusing reading experience.

A continuation of a fantasy series that is really enjoyable. Most of the book didn't follow up on the previous book, but I'm sure it will all tie together in the end. The book has interesting characters, a great plot, as long as you don't mind spending time reading a series that is going to be two more books after this one. Well worth the time.

Not going to do a book report for you but this book builds on the first one in the series and relates to earlief (in their timeline). So if this is the first one you have read, or want to read, STOP RIGHT NOW! Go to Wikipedia and read the series from start to finish.

[This applies to the Kindle version only.]The book - story, plot, writing, characters - was excellent. However, it was very clear that the book had been prepared for ebook format through an optical scan, not from a text file. There were numerous typographical, spelling and punctuation errors as a result. There are no characters or lines - only an extra space - to break scenes. Since the line spacing is fairly loose to begin with, that made for some confusing moments. The production of the ebook does not do Feist's works justice. This assessment applies to the Kindle versions of all four Serpentwar books - Shadow of a Dark Queen, Rise of a Merchant Prince, Rage of a Demon King and Shards of a Broken Crown. All were apparently prepared for publication in the same way, sans proofreading, with text just dumped on the page.

Rupert is a flawed character which is why I didn't like him when I was young but like him much more now as an adult on later rereading. Kind of wished he had a little bit more in later books.
