Great book, I gave it to my dad for Christmas
I like these books when they're colorful, creatively produced and have a bunch of recipes even if I don't intend to use them. This book qualifies and is entertaining to flip through. It would be a good gift for anyone with an interest in more mature drinking.Part of the book deals with various brands of gin, and it's interesting to look at different options. Will I ever see them in a liquor store? Who knows - but it's fun to be curious.There are lots of recipes, not hundreds but a couple dozen that give some flexibility. I view these books as more ideas than a comprehensive collection. So that's fine.All in all, a fun book - probably best as a gift. I don't think this is the sort of book someone would need or want to buy for themselves. If you're already a "motivated" drinker, you might know a lot of this already and will feel unfulfilled. But if it was a gift, the recipient could look at it with fresh eyes and be more entertained.Bottom line - colorful and fun to flip through, which is the key for any food/drink book.
Gin is my adult beverage of choice and this great DK book has all the information I’ll ever need to know about the beverage. I didn’t know, for instance, that gin is basically a variety of flavored vodka. The book addresses the science and brewing process in an understandable way. You get the flavor profiles that go into the making of the product. We all tend to think juniper berries – but how about grapefruit peel and coriander? Cocktail glass choices – it’s covered.The largest section is the A to Z brand names (from Adnams Copper House in England to William GB, again in England). We tend to think of gin as a Brit liquor but there are many brands from Canada, the Netherlands, New Zealand, France and even Spain. Each spotlighted product has the distiller’s philosophy, a little about the spirit itself and process, and finally the taste profile.Another section of the book has easy to follow recipes for famous and infamous cocktails you can make at home. Yes, you have your basic martini but how about gin with sake? In Japan the Ichigo Ichie (meaning chance meeting) is considered the perfect union of Junmai sake with gin and vermouth.Finally the book ends with processes, paraphernalia and ingredients you’ll need to have a well-stocked Gin bar. I just loved this book and found it fascinating. If it missed the boat on anything it’s that there was no mention of the gin that is near and dear to this old lady’s heart – good old Beefeaters.
Ginspiration is indeed an inspiration. My first impression of the book was “Wow, this is great.†The 144-page volume is bursting with color photos; many of them are full page. All are well done.The book starts with an explanation of how the alcoholic beverages are produced. There is even a colorful Flavor Wheel, which divides the constituents into pie-shaped slices.The bulk of the book is devoted to gin as a beverage and and its use in cocktails. About half is devoted to photographs and descriptions of various brands of gin. Each page has a color photograph of the bottle with a description.The other half describes the drinks that can be made. Most of these were new to me. That must be an indication of my misspent youth. I cannot wait to try the Espresso Martini. There are descriptions of how to put various drinks together.The book was indeed an inspiration. I rummaged around in my liqueur cabinet looking for some gin. My search was rewarded by the discovery of very old-looking ceramic bottle of Bols V.O. Genever Gin, 40 percent alcohol by volume. It was not one of those pictured, but I poured myself a shot and drank it straight. The taste was indeed botanical. It was great. I will have to do more of this.
I just did a review of a children's book of a type that I like as it keeps the young children entertained and occupied. In a way, "Ginspiration: The Best Distilleries, Infusions, and Cocktails" by Klaus St. Rainer is the same kind of book except for adults. I love the DK publishing line and when I saw this book, it reminded me of DK's World of Beer book that I once had that caught people's eye during visits. I ended up giving that book to a friend who was really into beer but it was a neat conversation piece."Ginspiration" is much like that. The photographs and illustrations are inviting. The text is informative but doesn't overwhelm. It has a wide variety of gin made throughout the world as well as ingredients that go well with gin, new variations, and recipes too. For a rather small book (it is less than 150 pages), it contains a lot of information that entertains and occupies and inspires one to try a recipe or two.It makes for a nice book for the coffee table for visitors as well as a nice gift book.
Ginspiration: The Best Distilleries, Infusions, and Cocktails is a fun book for a gin Connoisseur like me. I have always liked classy and specially crafted gin and this book has introduced me to a lot of classy gins I haven't even heard of. I have thoroughly enjoyed the detail about these different crafted gins from the best gin distilleries in the world. I learned about the subtle differences in gin character much like I learned about wines on the palette. There are some recipes in the back. It is not an exhaustive collection of gin mixed drink recipes but rather a recipe collection that shows off the best features of the finer gins. This book is not original material but instead it comes from a larger work entitled, "Craft Spirits and Cocktails." It is nevertheless a worthwhile effort because there is not a lot of written material out there that, "distills" just the Craft gin products with recommendations about the best distilleries and why they are the best. Cheers to this noble yet entertaining effort.
