I recently downloaded your book, Professor Gillman, and it is absolutely amazing! I love the way it is explained and it is easy to read. And from a scientific point of view, it is a must for all. I admit that I don't normally read about brain science and psychological issues, but your book combines the subjects beautifully. I highly recommend this book for all intelligent readers including laypeople as well as medical and allied professionals.Dr Marietjie Weakley, Dentist.

‘How the brain controls all pleasures including sex, food, drugs, rock ‘n roll and others’Review by Denise BjorkmanI love books and I love nonfiction. I should. I own more than 100 000 and they are all my friends. But I am also fussy. So when I was alerted to the new publication, ‘How the brain controls all pleasures: Sex Drugs Food and Rock and Roll’ by Prof Mark Gillman I was curious. After the first chapter, I sat up and paid attention. If getting double pleasure from a book is important to you, read this book. Take pleasure from beautifully modulated writing and pleasure from the content. It is enlightening and engaging. Learn about the human body and brain you will. You will also learn how one of South Africa’s finest minds brought prowess for the country. How the human body works in all its complexity is no walk in the park as Prof Mark Gillman will tell you in his book. But to ignore the beauty and wonderment of body mind activities that he so deftly paints with his author’s paintbrush, would be folly. As you journey through this book and share Gillman’s own travails one observation is irrefutable. His shared research with Dr. Fred Lichtigfeld is the stuff of a Nobel Prize. They got their first and were not acknowledged. Their contribution to medical science and the study of addiction coupled to real time solutions leaves nothing to the imagination. The chapter on the pleasure of love and sex is seductive. Here is a case of art imitating life or life imitating art. Gillman’s choice of words coaxes you into this important world while not distorting the facts. This art of weaving you gently into the subject matter and his life’s work is not the province of a few chapters alone.I always look for the author in the narrative. One of my English literature teachers over the years, Prof. Stephen Grey, provided a compelling argument that the author was always buried in the text and when that precious gift is found, it lends new meaning to the writing. It means, he said that we are given a privileged spectator view into the life and times of the author by default. At once the reader is witness to the symbiosis of author and content granting fresh perspectives and nuances to what could have been a collection of words. The autobiographical theme with soupçons into Gillman’s personal and professional life is also persuasive. The author is generous in his willingness to acknowledge forces, resources and caring people who have made his rich life possible. That Gillman is an extremely well read man is obvious from the content. An eclectic mind he peppers his chapters with historical elements to make the content inviting. His choices are appropriate. His life’s journey is clearly endowed - spiritually, personally and intellectually. The reader is made part of this.Be seduced. I am. This is a book to enjoy on a long flight, to be read on a day of rest, into the quiet hours of the morning or in a moment of self indulgence. It is one that provides elevating insights into the human body and brain and one man’s refusal to give up on paradigm shift thinking on addiction. It is an endorphin rush. It entertains, informs, educates and surprises. It is clear to me is book will occupy a special place in my library. The next prize for me is to get in signed by the great Professor himself. You will read this book again and again. Savour every word. I hope this book compounds the existing global recognition Prof Gillman as a pioneering author and scientist has achieved. He is our own Keats’ Cortez who looks on the world with eagle eyes: a worthy read, a worthy subject, a worthy man and a worthy accolade for a great mind.

Self-indulgent rubbish and boring as hell

How the brain controls all pleasures including sex, food, rock ‘n roll and othersSome years ago, I read and enjoyed Professor Gillman’s book on scientific envy and believing that it was an important contribution to our general understanding of this negative and much hidden human emotion. Indeed Gillman's analysis of Envy is an essential read for all those trying to understand the machinations of scientists, particularly in this modern era where the temptations and forces encouraging wrong-doing and corrupt scientific behaviour are now widespread. Professor Gillman is both an erudite scholar and scientist and I was therefore very keen to read his new book on human pleasure, which is also a 'scientific memoir ' and testimony to a very rich and productive scientific life. I am sure all those scholars and scientists interested in fundamental understanding and ideas will enjoy this book. Like his Envy as a Retarding Force in Science the current book is equally well written and packed with readily accessible material on the latest neuroscientific discoveries on human pleasure and how it is controlled by the human brain. Knowing his scientific expertise and interest in the miseries of addiction, I must admit to surprise at his current choice of subject. The mystery was soon solved by the introductory chapter, which reveals why the book was conceived. Before reading it, I had no idea that he and colleagues were the first neuroscientists to identify the physiological link between pain and pleasure. But then as I read the book I took some of his advice and had Beethoven's Symphony No. 5 playing gently in the background, which enhanced my understanding of Gillman's ideas on the mechanisms and evolution of human pleasure.Anyone who is interested, in widely disparate concepts such as why the most important sex organ lies between our ears and how we enjoy chocolate will be fascinated by reading this readily accessible book. I can heartily recommend it to any intelligent layman, biologists, doctor, indeed anyone, who wants to keep abreast of the latest scientific findings on the mysteries of pleasure and why it is so central to our lives and survival as a species.Ted SteeleAugust 17 2017Edward J Steele PhDMolecular Immunology & EvolutionAuthor of Lamarcks Signature Allen & Unwin, Sydney 1998 .

It explains in clear, uncluttered terms one of the chief motivators of human behaviour – pleasure. The book, written by someone who has contributed to our understanding of the pleasure brain, will appeal to everyday people and others, including health professionals. It is also a book that should encourage the pharmaceutical manufacturers to have a close look at their industry. I for one, found the subject so absorbing, and the writing style so clear, that I could not put the book down. A must read for everyone who wants to better understand their own and others behaviour.

Excellent read! Fascinating insights from a genius in his field.
