About the Author

Gary Griggs is a distinguished professor of earth and planetary sciences and the director of the Institute of Marine Sciences at the University of California Santa Cruz. He has been studying the coast of California for forty-five years and was named one of California's Coastal Heroes in 2009 by Sunset magazine and the California Coastal Commission. Gary is the author or co-author of six books, including Living with the Changing California Coast, Introduction to California's Beaches and Coast, and The Santa Cruz Coast--Then and Now.

One could speculate that the authors received inspiration for this stunning book from Collier's OVER THE COAST: AN AERIAL VIEW OF GEOLOGY which compliments the title under review. For students of earth science or lovers of the natural beauty of CA beaches, the photos in this book demonstrate, firstly, how coastal process have dramatically exposed the complex twisted and folded rock formations created by tectonic activity. The other visual lesson here involves coastal development pressures. The authors state 67 percent of CA's 38 million people live in coastal communities. As you can imagine, some of these photos are a stark reminder of where 'civilization' likes to congregate, sometimes with dire consequences. A few introductory pages on CA geology and a glossary are included in the book.. For more on CA's coastal geology see Gary's other titles mentioned in the editorial review--all excellent.

This is a well laid out book with amazing photos. I would highly recommend it. I bought this as a gift for my son, now will have to buy one for myself!

Learned a lot about coastal CA, and this is an older, native Californian who has been from end to end on or near this coast many times, but missed so much! Thanks for filling in the gaps.

This on-going Adventure/thriller by Brent Towns keeps one captivated with his fast action, bullet slinging, and escapes by the skin of their teeth in this second in series Reaper team exploits. If you like blood and guts action thrillers, you will definitely enjoy this novel. I was given a pre-release copy of this book for my honest review.

Town's creative writing doesn't spare any time pulling readers into some of the most intense action throughout the I international scene, rescuing innocents and destroying evil guys! Lots of close, but believable, close calls and near misses, blended with some almost love scenes, make this a fast-paced winner for all!

Over the past four decades or so, I've used quite a few commentaries and found them of limited value in addressing whatever particular point I had in view - which is but one use of a commentary, ie to clarify a specific passage. Seems I always have difficulty with those passages which all people, commentators included, find difficult. For me, the best use of a commentary then is to facilitate study of a whole chapter or entire book of the bible by reading the comments with, or after, the text.My favorite two commentaries are Matthew Henry's Complete and Unabridged, and this one - the JFB - in that order. I had already purchased the Kindle Henry, and happily added the JFB. I used to own more recent and often very expensive multi-volume commentaries wherein one volume covered one book - or part of one - and ultimately found them too scholarly, and so long-winded so as to be almost useless for me. These two dated works have helped me more than all others combined; the Henry is more devotional in approach, while the JFB is more exegetical but without overwhelming the reader. So I do heartily recommend the JFB, and suggest the Henry in conjunction as they make a good team.[UPDATE - I have now added the John Gill One-Volume Commentary to my Kindle library and find I actually prefer him to the JFB, so that's one to check out, too.]

I've used JFB in paper and computer versions over the years, and it serves it's purpose in my studies in conjunction with other commentaries. This Kindle version is not especially quick or easy to search, at least not on my devices. If all you have is a Kindle reader, then this book is still pretty good. If you have a Kindle Fire, there are other apps with JFB (and other commentaries) that work much better.

THe book itself is very good, but it's very hard to find anything using the poor quality table of contents. Being a research book it should be as easy to use as it's paper counter part. It's not just this book since most digital books are poorly if at all indexed.

I have been using JFB for years and have never been led astray. This is solid scholarship with clear and practical comments and applications. If I were to recommend a first commentary for a believer who wants to know the Word, this would be it.

It was free. I got what I paid for. It has some good information but very hard to go to a verse I wanted. I would get another one and PAY to get a commentary that is easier to use.

I find myself disagreeing a lot with writer's points of view, they know much more than I, but I just see events differently

This book is more of a dictionary type...it should reference supposedly the verse..thus you wont know whether it is a commentary or opinion or the verse itself..this is a waste of money..

…of the night sky, just like those goat-herders of 5,000 years ago.My introduction to cosmology came at an early age, with George Gamow and Fred Hoyle, each postulating an entirely difference vision of the universe, the “Big Bang” vs “the Steady State.” In 1960, it was still an open question. In the subsequent half century plus, humankind has made stunning progress in understanding those many stars (and galaxies) over our heads. If we had only made as much progress on how to get along with one another…This is my fifth work that I have read in the “A Very Short Introduction” series. I have found each to be well written, dense, meaningful reviews of a given subject. The author, James Binney, has provided a wonderful summary of the exponential grow in our knowledge of the stars above, which has been greatly facilitated by a similar exponential growth in computing power.Binney commences with the “big ideas” that were determined by Newton and Maxwell, that is, formulating the mathematical equations that described the process of the physical world. Defining them in terms of their observations of these processes on earth, and then realizing that these same equations (sometimes subsequently adjusted for Einstein’s relativistic equations) applied to matter and energy on the far side of the universe, remains a remarkable achievement.The author covers stars and galaxies, and how they are formed from the gases between the stars. Fifty years ago giant red stars and white dwarfs were known, but not black holes… where the matter is so dense that no light can escape from them. So how do we know they exist? By carefully analyzing the motion of adjacent stars, particularly in binary pairs. So much information is gained by simply analyzing the spectrum of light emitted, and the red shift of these spectrum. How do we know there are other planetary systems? By the luminosity of the star as the planets pass in front of them…and realizing that this must be distinguished from other reasons for fluctuations in luminosity.Our own planetary system is somewhat of a “fluke” in that the orbits of the planets are largely circular, and have avoided the normal instability of extreme elliptical orbits, which would pull a planet into the sun, or throw it completely out of the system. The perturbations to a given orbit, due to the tug and pull of all the other bodies of mass, could only be accurately modeled with modern computing power. And our sun is also in an orbit within the galaxy, and somehow we (as in a very few people) have figured out that “…56 per cent of the gravitational force that holds the Sun in its orbit is generated by dark matter so only 44 per cent is generated by stars.” And 50 years ago, no one knew of “dark matter.” As Binney says: “At heart cosmology is about three fluids: dark energy which nobody understands; dark matter which nobody can see; and the cosmic microwave radiation.This work has more equations that some of the other scientific works in this series. I do not fault placing the equations in the work, but they should be more readable, even after they have been increased in size in full view mode, and thus in the Kindle edition, they should be increased by 2-3 font sizes. There are also some useful graphs and pictures that the goat herders of old could only dream of… though a few saw the explosions of supernova, to which religious significance was often attached. Overall, another 5-star… as it were… read.

There are so many good insights woven across each chapter. It's like a feast of understanding of stars, interstellar medium, and galaxies. Just the right mixture of data and equations that someone looking for more than an introduction to Astronomy will love. Nothing but praise for the author, who clearly explains each topic and how they relate to our current understanding of stellar evolution, galaxies, and the universe.If you are interested in Astronomy, and want more than just introductions, buy this, and read it.The author does a great job of sharing his deep understandings of the topic, so that even a lay person can understand. Well worth the journey!

Fun weekend read.

Excellent short introduction. Assumes completion of high school physics classes to UK A level equivalent. The very short format is both a blessing for ensuring brevity, and a curse at times where more detail would have been welcome. The author has done a first class job given the limits of the series.

A somewhat difficult read, the work does an excellent job in describing what is known and not known. Stick to it through the reading and you will learn the essentials.

These books are incredible! My husband and I love all of the Very Short Introduction books. They are so informative with great diagrams and pictures. If you are interested in a subject, THIS is the place to start.

Montgomery, whom she has been obsessed with since she first read Anne of Green Gables in Grade Six. Maud, by Melanie Fishbane, provided by NetGalley as a digital ARC, was downloaded by me a couple of months ago. It sat on my IPad teasing me, taunting me, daring me to read it. I delayed the pleasure because I wished to savor it for as long as possible. I knew once I began reading this novel. I wouldn't be able to stop. I was correct. I read the entire book in one day. It is delicious and delightful, Melanie Fishbane captures Lucy Maud Montgomery"s voice so beautifully, it's quite haunting. It's like reading L.M. Montgomery's own journals, the words and depictions blend so well. I had to constantly remind myself this was historical fiction. It's been a long time since a book has so thoroughly entranced me like this one did. I hope the author will continue the story, with a follow up novel, soon. Melanie Fishbane is a talented Canadian writer who encapsulated a renowned, beloved icon of Canadian literature with her book.

I so wanted to like this book. I guess I went into this thinking I would be reading something like Anne of Green Gables or Emily of New Moon. Instead I found Maud blah and not very likable. I ended up not finishing the book.

Maud is an engaging fictionalized account of the early life of Lucy Maud Montgomery, the creator of the Anne of Green Gables books beloved the world over. While a work of historical fiction, the book encompasses many known facts and events of Montgomery's life. I was very surprised to see how very similar, in many ways, her growing up years were to those of her character Anne. It was also very sad to see how, unlike Anne, she never really seemed to have support or love from much of her family. I was very intrigued to say the least, and will be looking at a full length biography of her in the future.I was struck by how hard Montgomery worked to be able to write her stories. In a time when women were expected only to marry and have children, and anything else was considered strange or even evil, she chose education over even her current happiness or in some cases relationships with her family. She seems to have been a feminist before the term was coined. Though she did of course later marry and have children, it was only after she was an established and successful author.The author takes time to shed light on the condition of women's rights at this time in Canadian history, as well as the plight of some of the native people such as the Metis. There is also particular emphasis on the conflict between different denominations within the Christian church.The author has included a brief historical biography in the back of the book, along with specifics about what happened to certain characters. This really helped to tie up the story, especially since this particular book ended before Montgomery was even eighteen.4.5/5 stars. Highly recommend for anyone who has enjoyed the Anne of Green Gables story!Many thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for providing a free ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Much like The Radium Girls, Maud was written as narrative nonfiction, and it took me a little while to get into. It was very clearly based on Lucy Maud Montgomery's life, with all the hardships therein, but with a little extra lyricism on the author's part.Now that I've finished the book, I'm still not entirely sure I liked it. It was more than 400 pages, but Maud gets into college and that's the end of the story. It felt unfinished, despite the length of the story, and lacked the charming prose that Lucy Maud Montgomery used to worm her way into our hearts.There was a lot that was left unexplained. Even as someone who grew up in the church, I didn't understand why someone being Protestant wanting to be with someone who was Baptist was a big deal, even though it was talked about for probably a third of the book. It was never explored or explained, and given that this is narrative nonfiction, it needed to. We never found out why Mollie and Pensie hated each other, even though that was mentioned ten or twelve times.I also had no idea what the future held for Maud once it ended. This book was kind of a disappointment for me.
