Steep coastal cliffs gradually sliding into the ocean, an isolated sandy beach that cannot be reached by road, or sand dunes marching inland under the force of the wind are just a few of the scenes portrayed in the book's photos. Oceanographer Gary Griggs and architect Deepika Shrestha Ross provide insightful captions, describing the natural features, their changes over time, and human efforts to tame them. About the Author
Gary Griggs is a distinguished professor of earth and planetary sciences and the director of the Institute of Marine Sciences at the University of California Santa Cruz. He has been studying the coast of California for forty-five years and was named one of California's Coastal Heroes in 2009 by Sunset magazine and the California Coastal Commission. Gary is the author or co-author of six books, including Living with the Changing California Coast, Introduction to California's Beaches and Coast, and The Santa Cruz Coast--Then and Now.

One could speculate that the authors received inspiration for this stunning book from Collier's OVER THE COAST: AN AERIAL VIEW OF GEOLOGY which compliments the title under review. For students of earth science or lovers of the natural beauty of CA beaches, the photos in this book demonstrate, firstly, how coastal process have dramatically exposed the complex twisted and folded rock formations created by tectonic activity. The other visual lesson here involves coastal development pressures. The authors state 67 percent of CA's 38 million people live in coastal communities. As you can imagine, some of these photos are a stark reminder of where 'civilization' likes to congregate, sometimes with dire consequences. A few introductory pages on CA geology and a glossary are included in the book.. For more on CA's coastal geology see Gary's other titles mentioned in the editorial review--all excellent.
This is a well laid out book with amazing photos. I would highly recommend it. I bought this as a gift for my son, now will have to buy one for myself!
Learned a lot about coastal CA, and this is an older, native Californian who has been from end to end on or near this coast many times, but missed so much! Thanks for filling in the gaps.

There are also other a few other aerial books on the market that take segments of the state (more notably, the major urban areas such as San Francisco ) and provide photographic views.It should be noted, however, that California Coast from the Air isn't designed to be a glitzy armchair tourist read, but is a serious survey of the natural environment using some 150 of the best photos from a collection of over 100,000 aerial shots.From coastal dunes and plunging cliffs to the geography of each county in the state, chapters arranged by county and prefaced with color maps provide both photos and text filled with natural and human history.Without such accompanying text, California Coast from the Air could have found itself competing with more casual aerial photo collections. And without its wide-ranging photo focus on geography and natural history, the text wouldn't come to life as completely or successfully as it does, either.In the end California Coast from the Air is a fine example of a rare, difficult, and successful marriage between image, geography, and human and natural history, and provides California readers, in particular, with a fine feature enhanced by oceanographer Gary Griggs, architect Deepika Shrestha Ross, and photographers Kenneth and Gabrielle Adelman's diverse areas of expertise.
