This is the third book written from the perspective of Tancred, a Norman knight (Breton/Norman actually) j in the aftermath of the Norman invasion. The characters espouse the cause of Duke William, not Harold Godwinson, whom they refer to as a traitor for not honoring his pledge to support William upon the death of the English king. If you've been wallowing in books from the "English" perspective, this will rattle you a bit. Whereas we often think of Harold as a noble king defending his peoples from invasion, these characters approach the subjegation of the "rebels" in a totally different perspective. In short, Harold was entitled to be King and William was.Tancred seems to run into continual problems with controlling his mouth. He's arrogant, and while be keeps learning lessons, he doesn't seem to apply them. He is frequently forgiven due to his usefulness in battle, but he finally causes trouble (aka killing someone) which results in him being on the run to Ireland. He uses this "opportunity" to try to rescue Oswynn, a woman with whom he spent a scant six months and whom he presumed had died. I won't spoil it for you, but I'm cynical enough to question the depth of Tancred's feelings for her. There wasn't enough written about their relationship to give this pursuit credibility, although it is clear he blamed himself for her presumed death.I liked Tancred's loyalty, his adherence to his oaths, his care for the people entrusted to him. He seemed to have ethics in a world where there was little enough of that. He's fortunate to inspire loyalty among his companions, who seem to pull the fat from the fire when he gets himself into difficulty. And his creativity in breaching the walls of the most formidable entrenchments is fun to observe.Clearly, Tancred is not "done". He has more adventures ahead. I'm looking forward to reading Aitcheson's next book in this series.

I was looking for historical fiction about the Norman Conquest and discovered James Aitcheson's series featuring the fictional knight Tancred a Dinant. These book are exactly what I was looking for - lots of adventure, careful recreation of the historical period and minimal explicit sexual content. Tancred is an interesting hero - arrogant, guilt ridden, impetuous and an intelligent leader. Aitcheson is an excellent writer whose prose flows easily making for very enjoyable reading. Most of my ancestry is French, English, Irish and Scottish and dates back to the Conquest. I'm leaving this week with my family for a visit to the British Isles to discover our "roots" and reading these books is an enjoyable and useful means of learning the early history of the countries.

I enjoyed the story. Tancred is faced with loss many times in his life, but he does not faulter, he keeps continuing on the sword path, always with faith that he will find what he is looking for. The author does a great job making the journey feel real with his rich details that his history education and fertile imagination affords him, and I as the reader was thankful to come along for the ride.

The novel has merit, and while a bit laborious at points, was realistic, gritty and true to the era in which it was written.Quite immersive, and I enjoyed the voyage north as a change from the usual norman vs saxon action.

Read all 3, hope he continues with saga

OK but not as good as the previous books.....felt a little petulant, like we were supposed to feel sorry for the main character......weird.

Nice, clean book. Was the 3rd in a series, and my library did not have a copy. Arrived in good time. Pleased with the supplier

I read a lot of these types of novels. This one is well researched with credible action and reasonably well drawn characters. Interesting time period (post Hastings) for which there are not many novels. Recommended but not quite up to the level of Cornwell or Cameron.
