This is a very good "Jerry Mitchell" story, and fans of the series will like this novel. I gave it four stars instead of five because the novel includes a pretty draggy section that takes place in India that could have been told much more quickly -- this part of the book dragged on and on. Once the submarine action starts, this novel becomes quite good, and I enjoyed it. The interactions between the US and China seemed realistic, and Jerry Mitchell is as engaging as ever -- easily Larry Bond's best character.I thought that the reunion between the Russian and Indian former sub commanders, and Mitchell, was a bit too "good to be true" and I would have imagined a lot more in the "hard feelings" department between these chaps and Mitchell. Each reader can decide for him or her self.Overall I enjoyed this one a lot.

When a nuclear bomb explodes in Kashmir, the world immediates blames India, now in a shaky truce with Pakistan. The bomb takes out a Muslim terrorist camp and surrounding villages. But as national security adviser Joanna Patterson investigates, she finds the nuclear signature different from the bombs used by either India or Pakistan. Where did this bomb come from? Who detonated it? Do they have any more? And what are they planning to do with them? The answers lead to an Indian military cabal. Someone with crucial information will only talk to one person: American sub captain Jerry Mitchell, a former adversary whom he respects. So begins a surreptitious effort to expose the plot and stop it from starting nuclear war.I enjoyed how Bond draws together threads from the entire Mitchell saga - an Indian skipper whose sub he stalks in “Shattered Trident”, a Russian captain from “Cold Choices”, and a Soviet-era underwater nuclear dump from “Dangerous Ground” that Mitchell found out about on his first cruise. That was where he met Patterson, then a nuclear contamination specialist, and where she met her future husband, the sub’s captain and now a senator, Lowell Hardy. We all know, of course, that efforts to stymie the plot in port will fail, that a rogue submarine will set off on its mission, and that Mitchell will have to go after it.The submarine detail, as always, is very good - the strategy of the hunt, the attacks and countermeasures, and the deep reasoning that goes into every step.

Unlike Bond's previous books such as Cauldron, Vortex, Red Phoenix, and The Enemy Within, the authors show a shallow and almost indifferent understanding to the Indian executive structure. The authority over law enforcement and nuclear doctrine lies with the Prime Minister's Office, not the President (who has a largely ceremonial role). Some Indian names are either rare or fictitious, and the gender of one of the names (Sushma) is female, although the character is male. The authors do understand naval (and submarine in particular) warfare, and the tension is constant throughout. Some of the events are quite frankly incredulous, such as an accidental detonation, and the end to the refit of a major nuclear submarine being ordered by a single vice admiral, but it still reads well.Recommended if you're desperate, but don't expect the quality seen from Larry Bond in his previous works.

This book is part of a series regarding Jerry Mitchell as a US Navy nuclear attack submarine commander. The plots are always GeoPolitical but based on the current world situation all quite plausible. This adds to the realistic situations. In this novel, India, China and Russia are all involved in another possible war. The US attempts to remain neutral but once again gets dragged into having to take a role in trying to prevent an escalation.I found some of the dialogue from the Indian, Chinese, and Russian characters seeming stilted and unrealistic from some of the action sequences but perhaps that is just me thinking that.I enjoyed this book but do not think it is as good as the others in the series.

Larry Bond has developed Jerry Mitchell throughout this series and brought his relationship from his first cruise and discovery of the hidden nuclear missile in the arctic full circle in this novel. It is a very suspenseful novel as it develops the relationships he has made with his first Captain, the Russian Captain of the first Sub he defeated, the Indian Captain of the Sub he spared and him into a partnership to prevent a major War. Very suspenseful plot and who is good and bad guys are and their motive.

Pretty good read although a couple of times it got slow and almost dragged by. I was surprised by the plot in a few places and found it to be somewhat believable. I have been a Larry Bond fan for many years and have always found his books entertaining and very well worth the money and time one invests in reading them. Mr. Bond takes the time to do proper research and his military nomenclature is almost always correct.

I have always enjoyed this author's books but this was just unbearable to read. Bizarre dialog from Russians and Indian nationals, an equally bizarre plot, it was just torture. I kept at it as long as I could but I finally had to stop.

This was a pretty good read. The fifth book in the series sees some of the characters from the earlier books reappear. Of course the main cast is there too. It also ties up some of the loose threads from the previous Jerry Mitchell book. I enjoyed it.
