Latin America in Construction: Architecture 1955–1980, by Barry Bergdoll

Review

In the book just as in the show, the entire visual scope of architectural production is on display―design sketches, graphs, presentation renderings and construction documents, magazines, notebooks and photographs... all get their share.... An architecture that was often more courageous and grander, structurally daring, iconographically innovative, and more responsive to climate and cultural context than what happened in Europe and the US at the same time. The catalogue, with its particularly insightful essays and high production value, is a lasting testament to a remarkably dense exhibition. (Dietrich Neumann Society of Architectural Historians)Generously and comprehensively illustrated with historical and contemporary images of the most important work produced in Latin America... an important resource. Essential. (L.E. Carranza Choice)It serves, then, not only as a much-delayed sequel to the 1955 show, but as an autopsy for a dead epoch. (Tony Wood Bookforum)

Equally accessible to young adults and old adults alike, this book of Caitlin O'Connell's 19 years of Elephant research in the wild combines her husband's gorgeous photographs with surprise after surprise: scientific breakthroughs by O'Connell herself that demonstrate, among other facts, the astonishing way Elephants communicate not only through their infrasonic forehead rumbles but by the specialized listening cells in the pads of their feet. Inexpensive and packed with information, this is a MUST-HAVE BOOK for anyone interested in the African Elephant.

Interesting, with a lot of facts. Easy to read. A good book for anyone interested in knowing more about elephants than what is at the zoo. They are very intelligent animals, they show emotion and are altruistic and more. Wonderful color pictures. Addresses the poaching problem and the possible extinction of elephants if something is not done.

Whether you are a wildlife or elephant enthusiast or not-- you will enjoy this book about elephants, a scientist's process in studying, and the new discovery O'Connell made.

Fascinating information/stories about an incredible animal!

THANKS~!

Love this book!

An informative non-fiction text that would be a delightful and interesting addition to a classroom library for those students who prefer to engage in reading non-fiction.

Good story and photos. Good for inspiring girls especially to go into science.

Health Care and the Charter: Legal Mobilization and Policy Change in Canada (Law and Society)

Review

Since the introduction of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms in 1982, individuals and organizations have increasingly turned to the courts to try to bring about policy change in a variety of areas, including health care. But although the outcomes of Supreme Court cases on health care issues are closely watched, can they effect actual change in policy? Health Care and the Charter explores the systematic use of Charter litigation in the area of health care and the ultimate policy impact of the resulting judicial decisions. Christopher P. Manfredi and Antonia Maioni examine three of the most controversial Supreme Court decisions in recent years. Two of the cases – Eldridge (1997) and Auton (2004) – invited the Court to extend the scope of publicly funded services. By contrast, Chaouilli (2005) asked the Court to allow private health services. Eldridge and Chaoulli provided legal victories to rights claimants; Auton dealt a legal defeat to its initiators. This book explores the paths that brought litigants to the Court, the arguments and evidence they mustered to support their positions, and the substance of the victory or defeat the Court provided them. The volume then assesses the ultimate impact of these cases in both policy and political terms.

Review

Health Care and the Charter is the kind of book that has you wondering why it hadn’t been written earlier. It asks and answers powerful questions about how the Supreme Court of Canada’s decisions work their way back out into the everyday world. Given the tendency and the temptation to treat “the Supreme Court has spoken” as the end of the story, this is a powerful and necessary corrective and one that is extremely well done. (Peter McCormick, professor of political science, University of Lethbridge)Health Care and the Charter uses three important case studies to address the Supreme Court’s impact on health policy, as well as our broader understanding of litigation under the Charter of Rights. It is an insightful book on an important topic. (Emmett Macfarlane, associate professor of political science, University of Waterloo)

My club pro recommended this book, and has attended several boot camps run by Strademo. I devoured the book in 2 days, and highlighted points on almost every page. Biggest pointer: Defining the "action zone" where 90% of shots bounce to (between 28 and 38 feet)... I was continually playing too far up. If your opponent can kill a shot infront of that zone, let him have it. In stead, say back, and hope he misses and go for the rekill or a defensive shot. I implemented it and it's already helped my game. Also gives many fundamentals on technique, as well as how to make the shots that I never understood. It's only my 1st racquetball book, but Highly recommended. It will take me at least a year of practice to implement everything.

21 Lessons for the 21st Century, by Yuval Noah Harari

Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of September 2018: It’s hard to imagine having as many deep thoughts as Yuval Noah Harari. His 2015 book, Sapiens, examined the human race through the vectors of history and biology, illuminating how each has influenced our behavior and evolution. Two years later, Homo Deus took us in the opposite direction, predicting the profound changes we will undergo as technology becomes increasingly intertwined in our lives and bodies. Just a year and a half later, Harari turns his attention to more immediate concerns. Using the same tack-sharp lens as his previous books, 21 Lessons for the 21st Century addresses urgent, shape-shifting topics that will shape our present and near future, including nationalism, religion, immigration, artificial intelligence, and even the nature of Truth—in other words, everything you're not supposed to talk about at Thanksgiving. Harari is not always reassuring, and he's certainly unafraid of questions challenging widely held views on both global and personal scales, i.e. yours. His quest is not to tear holes in belief systems, but to expand conversations and strip the -isms that channel us into predictably intractable stand-offs. Calling any book "urgent" or "a must-read" is almost always hyperbolic, even shrill. But especially now, 21 Lessons fits the bill. —Jon Foro, Amazon Book Review

Review

“The human mind wants to worry. This is not necessarily a bad thing—after all, if a bear is stalking you, worrying about it may well save your life. Although most of us don’t need to lose too much sleep over bears these days, modern life does present plenty of other reasons for concern: terrorism, climate change, the rise of A.I., encroachments on our privacy, even the apparent decline of international cooperation. In his fascinating new book, 21 Lessons for the 21st Century, the historian Yuval Noah Harari creates a useful framework for confronting these fears. While his previous best sellers, Sapiens and Homo Deus, covered the past and future respectively, his new book is all about the present. The trick for putting an end to our anxieties, he suggests, is not to stop worrying. It’s to know which things to worry about, and how much to worry about them. . . . Harari is such a stimulating writer that even when I disagreed, I wanted to keep reading and thinking. . . . [Harari] has teed up a crucial global conversation about how to take on the problems of the twenty-first century.”—Bill Gates, The New York Times Book Review“If there were such a thing as a required instruction manual for politicians and thought leaders, Israeli historian Yuval Noah Harari’s 21 Lessons for the 21st Century would deserve serious consideration. In this collection of provocative essays, Harari, author of the critically praised Sapiens and Homo Deus, tackles a daunting array of issues, endeavoring to answer a persistent question: ‘What is happening in the world today, and what is the deep meaning of these events?’ . . . Harari makes a passionate argument for reshaping our educational systems and replacing our current emphasis on quickly outdated substantive knowledge with the ‘four Cs’—critical thinking, communication, collaboration and creativity. . . . Thoughtful readers will find 21 Lessons for the 21st Century to be a mind-expanding experience.”—BookPage (top pick) “A sobering and tough-minded perspective on bewildering new vistas.”—Booklist (starred review)  “Magnificently combining historical, scientific, political, and philosophical perspectives, Harari . . . explores twenty-one of what he considers to be today’s ‘greatest challenges.’ Despite the title’s reference to ‘lessons,’ his tone is not prescriptive but exploratory, seeking to provoke debate without offering definitive solutions. . . . Within this broad construct, Harari discusses many pressing issues, including problems associated with liberal democracy, nationalism, immigration, and religion. This well-informed and searching book is one to be savored and widely discussed.”—Publishers Weekly (starred review) “A highly instructive exploration of ‘current affairs and . . . the immediate future of human societies.’ Having produced an international bestseller about human origins and avoided the sophomore jinx writing about our destiny, Harari proves that he has not lost his touch, casting a brilliantly insightful eye on today’s myriad crises, from Trump to terrorism, Brexit to big data. . . . [In] twenty-one painfully astute essays, he delivers his take on where our increasingly ‘post-truth’ world is headed. Human ingenuity, which enables us to control the outside world, may soon re-engineer our insides, extend life, and guide our thoughts. Science-fiction movies get the future wrong, if only because they have happy endings. Most readers will find Harari’s narrative deliciously reasonable, including his explanation of the stories (not actually true but rational) of those who elect dictators, populists, and nationalists. His remedies for wildly disruptive technology (biotech, infotech) and its consequences (climate change, mass unemployment) ring true, provided nations act with more good sense than they have shown throughout history. Harari delivers yet another tour de force.”—Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

Yuval Noah Harari’s name came up when a few years ago a friend urged me to read Harari’s best-selling Sapiens, which I have put off, but since reading 21 Lessons for the 21st Century, a book that reads more like an essay collection, than a outright book (not a bad thing in this case), I do want to feast on all of Harrari’s books. I had to underline close to a hundred cogent insights throughout the book.If anything unifies these essays--ranging from religion, morality, AI, terrorism, universal basic income, freedom, equality, meditation, nationalism, post-truth fascism, Trumpism, justice, secularism, and education—it is Harari’s desire to use his expertise as a historian, and by turn, a futurist, to equip us with the tools, attitudes, and moral approaches to moving forward in the 21st Century, shedding unwanted baggage such as fundamentalism, nationalism, racism, and other “isms.”In his Introduction, he brilliantly begins: “In a world deluged by irrelevant information, clarity is power. . . . As a historian, I cannot give people food or clothes—but I can try to offer some clarity, thereby helping to level the global playing field.”He warns us that the liberal secular vision of humankind moving forward with the powers of reason has taken a huge hit with the nihilism of Trumpism.Taken as a whole, Harari’s book is intended to give us the tools to ward off nihilism, arrogance, and primitive “isms” and to become a fully realized modern human being. Highly recommended.

21 Lessons for the 21st century is not comparable to Harari’s previous landmark works of history and prognostication Sapiens and Homo Deus. Written with the purpose of focusing not on the future nor the past but on contemporary civilization, Harari tends to make sweeping assumptions and badly reasoned arguments when he is not flat out contradictory. Even worse, most of the content is the sort of generalizations seen in futurist websites and Facebook groups. It’s not so much that it’s false as that it’s not new.I will try to summarize some examples of why I think this book is a poor relative to Harari’s previous works. Harari argues that elections might be infeasible in the future. Why? Because if elections were about reason then obviously we would appoint a committee of experts to choose our leaders. Since we don’t, elections must be all about emotions which, as seen in 2016, are increasingly going to be controlled by AI. Therefore, per Harari, elections will become passé. He does not consider that, like guessing the number of coins in a jar, elections might be held because, when you combine millions of voters responses, individual biases in reasoning will balance each other out and you will arrive at the best answer.Another example: AI will soon create works of art superior to humans. This is because Harari asserts that art is all about the emotions and so AI will be able to manipulate these emotions better than a human artist. However, when I, for one, read Aeschylus I don’t experience much emotion but do enjoy the incredible craftsmanship and artistry of a creative genius. Many patrons of the arts I think would agree.Lastly, the book concludes with Harari explaining that all meta-narratives—Christian, liberal, communist, Islamic, etc.— have been proven wrong by modern science. Even the stories of personal identity we tell ourselves—what we were like as children and how that made us into the adults we are today—are bogus because there’s no human soul that would make different times in our life into a unity. So, having dismissed all personal narratives, Harari then goes on to tell his own story about how Buddhist meditation led him from being a confused and stressed teenager into the confident author of Sapiens and Homo Deus. Doesn’t Harari see that he cannot recommend mindfulness meditation as the correct response to personal suffering by telling a story if several pages earlier he said that personal narratives are illusory?Harari is a talented writer and one can enjoy reading this book as an intelligent man’s musings about the contemporary world picture. But it simply cannot be considered in the same light as his previous monumental achievements.

How safe from obsolescence is the job you have now? Do you have the skills to adapt in the rapidly changing Big Data environment? How will the merger of infotech and biotech affect our collective future? How can we prevent climate change from irrevocably changing the planet? What will the next global armed conflict look like? Is the recent rise in nationalism a threat to world security? How does “post-truth” (i.e., fake news) affect our thinking? Do terrorist attacks create more fear and suffering than they should? How do the stories we tell ourselves, whether religious or secular in nature, influence our behavior? These are all questions that are clearly of concern to each of us in the here and now. They also motivate many of the “lessons” discussed in 21 Lessons for the 21st Century, a volume that once again combines Yuval Noah Harari’s unique blend of history, science, philosophy, and anthropology. Unlike Sapiens, which explored mankind’s past 10,000 years, and Homo Deus, which projects humanity’s long-term future, this book purports to assess the major issues facing us in the present. Unfortunately, this exploration is neither wholly successful nor is it nearly as compelling as the author’s previous two efforts. To be sure, there is a lot to like about what appears here. In particular, Harari’s discussion of the economic, legal, and social challenges created by the ascent of Big Data is very illuminating. Who owns the information summarizing our lives—or, perhaps more critically, who controls it—is indeed likely to be one of the major issues defining our near-term future. I also thought that the author’s interpretations of nationalism and secularism were insightful. Overall, he did a nice job of connecting several disparate themes into a cohesive bigger picture (e.g., a discussion of the importance of developing a global community is followed by an examination of nationalist sentiment which leads to a consideration of the immigration problem and then to the threat posed by terrorism). The main problem I had with all of this is that major portions of the book were not especially original and often seemed like slightly reworked versions of arguments used in the author’s previous studies. For instance, the rise of biotech was thoroughly covered in Homo Deus and humankind’s use of rituals and ability to create useful fictions were essential parts of Sapiens. As such, there are really far fewer than 21 distinct lessons presented here, despite the volume containing 21 different chapters. Finally, the last two chapters involving the role of personal stories and the importance of meditation were woefully self-indulgent and had an off-putting pop-psychology/self-help feel to them. So, while 21 Lessons for the 21st Century is not at all a bad book, the reader might be better served by considering the author’s earlier work instead.

Review

"Understanding Scientific Theories of Origins is a groundbreaking book. These engaging, field-tested materials, used over many years by outstanding faculty at a flagship Christian university, are sure to be an important new resource for Christian students. Understanding Scientific Theories of Origins reflects top-notch scholarship sensitively distilled to an accessible level, and it is uniquely comprehensive in its treatment of data from the physical and biological sciences, as well as philosophy, theology, and biblical studies. Understanding Scientific Theories of Origins is going to be on my short list of recommended resources in this important area. Highly recommended!" (Jeff Hardin, Raymond E. Keller Professor and Chair of the Department of Integrative Biology, University of Wisconsin-Madison)"Understanding Scientific Theories of Origins is one of the clearest and most helpful articulations of the discussion on origins. The topics include frameworks for biblical interpretations, descriptions of interpretations by differing Christian traditions, the approaches and types of evidence used across scientific fields, and some of the best contemporary theological work that emphasizes Trinitarian ways of thinking and understanding. This book also draws on the insights of the last several decades of creation care theology. I recommend it for a broad range of audiences both because of its depth of understanding and its accessibility." (Janel Curry, Gordon College)"According to the Bible, God created everything―the cosmos, the solar system, the earth, and life itself. Many Christians wrongly believe that science undermines that belief and so they avoid, or worse, attack science. Understanding Scientific Theories of Origins is a book that looks at the best mainstream science from a Christian perspective to show that such fears are unfounded. This book, born in the classroom, is a perfect textbook for colleges and also for all Christians who are interested in the question of how the Bible and science relate." (Tremper Longman III, Distinguished Scholar and Professor Emeritus of Biblical Studies, Westmont College)"This superbly designed textbook once again shows how foolish it is to think of 'warfare' when considering science in relation to Christian faith. The team of authors includes first-rate scientists and much-respected Bible scholars. Together they explain clearly, patiently, and with accessible language why modern believers have nothing to fear from established scientific research―and why orthodox Christian faith has so much to offer in clarifying what scientists discover. It is a book perfect for the classroom, but also full of insight for general readers as well." (Mark Noll, author of The Scandal of the Evangelical Mind, coeditor of B. B. Warfield: Evolution, Science, and Scripture)"At a time when the world faces major existential questions including the impact of humans on the environment and the shape of the humanity's future (with the ability to profoundly alter ourselves through various forms of enhancement and gene editing), there is a profound need for faithful, cogent, and sensitive discussions of the relationship between scientific methods, discovery and advancement, and Christian theology. The issues touch on all the academic disciplines in the modern university. Hence, these discussions should begin as a foundation of pedagogical commitments, and to succeed well, ought to be truly interdisciplinary. This is no easy brief to meet and so it is rarely found leaving a yawning gap. This book fills that significant void offering us the benefit of the authors'―who represent an important range of disciplines―years of classroom, scholarly, and public engagement experience. It justly deserves to become a standard work in college courses seeking to integrate deep reflection on science and Christianity. We will all be the better for it." (Stanley P. Rosenberg, executive director, Scholarship & Christianity in Oxford, Wycliffe Hall and the faculty of theology and religion, University of Oxford)

This book will make an excellent college textbook on the subject of science and Christianity. It covers a lot of material and flows well, starting with biblical interpretation, then up-to-date material on the origins of the universe, the earth, life, species, and humans. Each section concludes with a chapter on biblical and theological perspectives. The authors clearly favor non-concordist (“parallels between biblical texts and scientific statements are not required and there are no expectations of biblical texts having scientific implications”) over concordist (“presupposing that biblical texts have scientific import”) of Scripture.Throughout the book, the authors refer to a doctrine of functional integrity of creation, by which they mean that “creation can accomplish what the Father intends it to accomplish in the Son through the Spirit.” They discuss the material means by which God’s intentional creative process occurs. One of the more interesting aspects of the book is that the authors clearly describe what science knows and doesn’t yet know, particularly in the chapters on the origin of life, where open questions are brought up and discussed. My only issue with the book is that it contains more than I needed to know about the scientific details and less than I wanted to know about some of the theological issues that result from accepting the science, such as the fall and original sin.

I love this book. It is essentially a textbook, but the authors treat such a broad range of subjects with such thorough scientific analysis and yet such reverent and logical theology that the length can be forgiven. I think every Christian should read this book, but it will especially give hope to Christians who have struggled to reconcile faith with scientific facts. The authors did a wonderful job. As an added bonus, the book is simply beautiful.

Whether you are a proponent of Evolutionary Creationism or one who thinks it is a horribly conceived idea, you'll probably want to engage with this book. Wheaton College professors have been teaching a course for years covering the Biblical, Theological and Scientific aspects of Origins. Now they have produced a textbook. And here is my first caveat: It reads like a textbook! This is not a book that will keep most of you up at night, but it is a book that deals with conventional science as it relates to the origins of the universe, the earth, and life, especially human life and how to relate that to the Bible. If you have read John Walton's Lost World series, you'll kind of know where they are going theologically. If you homeschool (like my family) you'll want to pick this book up just so you and your kids are exposed to the best science available when it comes to Origins. And even if you disagree with it theologically, I would still strongly urge you to read it and acknowledge to yourself and your kids that there are Christians who deeply love God and His Word who disagree with you.

This is a fantastic resource that is a must-read for anyone who wants to explore the intersection of human origins and Christian theology in an intelligent manor. In this book you will get a world-class presentation of the current science on human origins. The text would be worth the price simply for access to excellent scientific scholarship in a single volume. In addition, and what makes the book truly unique, is the attention that's paid to the theological question of human origins. John Walton offers an account of how to read the creation account(s) in a manner that takes their Ancient Near East context into account. In the end, the book shows one way in which contemporary science and biblical interpretation can be mutually-edifying conversation partners rather than jilted lovers with an axe to grind.

For decades, a group of professors at Wheaton College has taught a class on Theories of Orgins of the universe from a Christian perspective. In doing so, they have not advocated for an understanding of a young earth. Using multiple scientific and academic disciplines, they have shown how it is possible to have a number of view of orgins based on Scripture, including one that integrates the findings of science that lean toward evolution with an honest interpretation of Scripture, especially Genesis 1-3.This book is a result of the up-to-date results of their work together, designed as a text that other professors in other schools can use to replicate the experience that these professors have had in their class. Published in partnership with Biologos, an organization that seeks to integrate scientific perspectives with Biblical truth, this is sure to be used in Christian schools and maybe some secular institutions as well across the country. What a great addition to the study of orgins. I need to give it a more thorough reading. As for now, it has a place on my shelf both as a resource and a conversation piece.
