About the Author

Anna Jane Hays has had firsthand experience with seven preschoolers–her own two children and five grandchildren–as well as over 30 years experience in creating educational picture books, storybooks, and print activity books for preschoolers. She joined the Children’s Television Workshop in 1970 and used her creativity and expertise to help develop publishing based on Sesame Street, the then-new, innovative, PBS preschool educational television series. She was first managing editor of the Sesame Street magazine start-up and developed original Sesame Street Book publishing in partnerships with Golden Press and Random House. After 29 years at Sesame Street, she retired as Vice President/Editor in Chief of Book Publishing at Children's Television Workshop. Hays continues her work in children’s publishing and has since published several storybooks and picture books with Random House, including "Silly Sara," "The Pup Speaks Up," and several other Step Into Reading and Sesame Workshop titles. Hays received her AA at Stephens College, Columbia, MO, and her BA in Honors English at the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, NM. She then pursued a variety of post-graduate academic studies, including writers workshops at New York University and Columbia University.The author of numerous books for both US and European publishers, Hays continues her work in children's publishing as an editor, writer, and consultant. I bought this book to help my son transition from being at home to pre-school. We read about the different things at school, playing, being dropped off by his parents and making new friends. I substitute the names in the book for his name so that he will feel comfortable going to preschool. He still cried during his first week of school, but each day I would take the book out and go over things with him, like what's in the classroom, daddy dropping him off, etc. It's his 3rd week of school and no more crying. He's doing great!

My son loves this book!

What a delightful book for both children and adults who have contact with children! How convenient to have things to read to small children and things older children can read themselves.

We shouldn't have to trick kids into learning, and this lively collection of activities and stories will delight kids and adults alike while teaching alphabet, counting, colors, shapes, and a glimpse into preschool life. I'd keep it in the back seat of the car for the kids to read and look at on the way to preschool!

I really enjoyed this book. It was well paced, and the story was very interesting. In particular, it was really interesting to see this from the point of view of the Independent Counsel's office, since the main views we've had up to now are former President Clinton's view and the media's view. Also, as someone born in 1983, I have some memory of Monica and the impeachment late in his Presidency, but most of the early investigation was not about Monica. It was about a land deal in Arkansas called Whitewater, and it was interesting to finally understand what that was all about, since I was too young to understand at the time.Perhaps more importantly, this book is very relevant because of the cast of characters. Names like Brett Kavanaugh, Rod Rosenstein, Hilary Clinton, Eric Holder, and many others that would be immediately recognizable, are all connected with this investigation. And the amount of impact this investigation had on history and our current times is probably more than has generally been acknowledged up to this point.For example, Starr describes Eric Holder as someone who was originally a very honest straight shooter in the DOJ, but that he seemed to change about halfway through Clinton's tenure. While Starr did not talk in the book about what happened to Holder after the investigation, now that 20 years have passed, we know Holder went on to be the Attorney General under Obama, where he was mired in controversy surrounding the Fast and Furious scandal and held in Contempt of Congress for refusing to turn over documents they asked for. In fact, he is the only Attorney General in history to have been held in both civil and criminal contempt. Did the corrosive lack of ethical standards of the Clinton administration have much to do with this in him? It sure appears so.Then we have Hilary Clinton. Most people think the investigation was just about Bill and Monica, but most of it wasn't. It was about the Whitewater land deal and some shady dealings between the bank and the Rose Law Firm, where Hilary was a partner. Starr writes that a lot of the Rose Law Firm billing records that were under subpeona mysteriously disappeared. Moreover, when they interviewed Hilary, they believed she was wholly dishonest, as she answered almost all questions as "I don't recall/remember." Fast forward 20 years to the email scandal, and she destroys 30,000 emails under subpeona, claiming they were just personal, not government related. She then used Bleach Bit to wipe the server's hard drive, so we'll never know now. In her interviews and testimony, she would mostly answer "I don't remember/recall." Same pattern of dishonesty and contempt.Starr writes in the book that he is glad Clinton was not removed from office over the investigation. I used to feel the same way, since he otherwise was a pretty talented president. But my opinion on that has strongly changed after reading this book. Ironically, I do NOT agree with Starr's conclusion. It seems like most people in the government, especially in the DOJ, FBI, etc, were pretty ethical and honest when Starr did this investigation, and that was true regardless of party. Since Clinton, we seem to have much more dishonesty and lack of ethics in the bureaucracy, and after reading this book, I now believe a lot of this can be traced straight to Bill and Hilary, and the example they set and the fact that they got away with everything and were never punished. I think had Bill been removed from office, it would have been a powerful example that you aren't above the law just because you are a powerful government person, and this country might be on a very different track today. This book changed my mind: the US Senate should have removed him.

I am the only one who is actually verified buyer..so don’t pay attention to leftist hate on here. The book is very well written and he does give new info on a lot that took place. He was honest and open. Fast read. Glad to FINALLY get the real story!

Starr has written a most compelling expose' of political life in Washington - the Clinton duo and their supporters tried to weave a web of unprecedented deception. Yet the book is not just a story about the corrupt Clintons, it is about the many who supported and covered up the Clintons and their open contempt for the law and of morality. Many of those mentioned in this memoir are still in Washington and still busy spinning the same lies and meddling in secret combinations of untruth and devastation of moral values and trust. Starr is a star. A good honest man who possessed and honored values and truth in the face of fierce nefarious opposition. Nice work Ken! Thank you...

Very well written and meticulously documented. I was expecting a boring , dry book but in fact I could not put it down. After reading it, I also read the Starr report in detail. It brought up a lot of memories of that time in our history and reminded me of so many details I have forgotten with time. Our country dodged a bullet in the 2016 election not to let these two crooks back into the White House. The rancor we see today was started by them. Win at any cost, no shame what so ever. Trample and destroy anyone who gets in the way. The way they went after Starr after he was appointed Special Counselor is bone chilling. This is an excellent read. I highly recommend this book.

This is a magnificent book, carefully told, carefully researched, carefully presented. Judge Starr makes clear where he made mistakes, and is neither self-righteous nor vindictive. He lays out the story of his investigation in a fair and judicious manner. Written with narrative clarity, legal clarity and moral clarity, it is a model of great story-telling. It deserves a wide audience, the widest possible.

DEATH SENTENCE by Joe Sharkey is a fascinating read.It is the 1970's true crime story of a father named John List who murders his entire family and goes on to create a new personnae and life afterwards.The story is well researched and skillfully written. It provides a lot of insight into List's character and psyche. Although quite informative in that regard, it is a chilling look at a sociopath's skewed thought processes and reasoning. At the end of the tale you're still left with a man who shows no remorse and remains self-justified in the killing of his entire family.Sharkey has done an amazing job of breathing new life into an old true crime case the public has only known on the merits of its surface details. Kudos to the author for a job well done!

I was hesitant in buying the book Death Sentence, having already seen several documentaries, Forensic Files, and America's Most Wanted on this story, thinking what more could I learn. I decided to give it a shot and soon found out that I made an excellent choice. Despite seeing the aforementioned TV shows, I learned a lot about the List tragedy from this tome. The book is well written with no writing or grammatical errors and was hard to put down. I have always had an interest in the List case, but after this reading experience, I may check out other writings by Joe Sharkey.

I don't read much true crime; it always feels too emotionally difficult. But this one is so famous, and takes part in nearby New Jersey, and I knew much of the actual events.The book recounts actual events as we see that List acted premeditatedly and planned those horrendous murders far in advance; he was emotionless as he established a time-line for his actions. This was so chilling--his cold heartless steps as he determined how he would kill each family member.There is close focus on John List, and we learned so much about his strange ways. He worked as an accountant, but had difficulty holding his jobs. Nevertheless, his dreams (and those of his first wife who had a brain disease) were grandiose. They bought homes beyond their means. He was extremely devoted to the Lutheran Church, and was an officer of the Church administration; he read from the Bible every night. He wore a black suit and tie always, even when mowing the lawn.List seemed to be a loving father, albeit overly religious and strict, and also curiously bland as a human being. He often could be kind, gentle and considerate. He didn't look like a killer, and didn't act like one--but there was still an abundance of clues that John was peculiar. The most upsetting of situations: He actually sat his three children down and told them that he planned to murder them. The oldest, 16-year Patty was terrified but had no course to follow for help; she confided in the director of her theater group, but it didn't change the situation. It is appalling that he announced his murderous intents, and he still wasn't stopped.The story of John's "rebirth" with a new name is also amazing. So many people found him likable, and yet, his hidden past didn't raise any flags. He never spoke of his earlier days in any way -- all he would admit to was that he had a wife who died. He married again—but his inability to retain employment was an issue.This book presented so much to think about. I really enjoyed this story of a strange man who committed the most horrible of crimes, without remorse but with many justifications and explanations. A perfect study of the dark extremes of the human heart.

This is a very full telling of the murders of five family members. The actual crime is not too emotionally hard to read (I was dreading this part) because it is kind of clinically told without embellishments of horror. John List is the focus throughout: the family situation, the educated, professional accountant whose qualifications enable him to find excellent jobs, but is fired from every one, the compulsion to keep everything in secret compartments, and the religious man who knows doctrine but has no faith.The story flowed beautifully. What a great researcher and author.

Great detail into actual crime information that I did not know before. Of greater interest is the story of the drama within the family and how John List moved on with his life without a hitch. Wow! Something that can never be understood is how did that guy live with what he has done for 18 years?

This is a good book about a terrible man. I appreciate the details and facts that the author gathered about the tragic and terrible events.

I have always been intrigued with the John List murders. This book gives very good insight into the family life prior to the murders. Most importantly, it provides a rather detailed account of John List's life after the murders as his alias Robert Clark. The only fact that wasn't listed was that the glass in the ballroom ceiling was a Tiffany original. I always thought this compounded the tragedy, as John List as an accountant, surely could have sold the house with the valuable ceiling and solved his financial difficulties, had he been aware of its true value.Good read, well researched. Photos included.

The author drew me into the story as though I was there as a witness. All true crime enthusiasts need to get this today.

The book shows snare and bass drum notes. I practiced those notes while playing the basic jazz swing pattern on the hi-hat and ride and it really helped me increase the independence of each limb. It also significantly improved my left hand control. Buy this book and practice it! You will not be sorry.

If you are Drummer you must get this book. This is one of the Bibles of drumming. If you're taking drumming seriously, seriously get this book. Work through it slowly. If you're a teacher, you need this for yourself and your students. If your student, you should ask your teacher to walk you through this book. After going through this book look at my other reviews and there are two other books you need to find which you will see. Go through the Bibles of drumming, properly, like everybody else, and you too can get anywhere you want in drumming. The guys you pay a lot of money for at-large stadiums who drum, all did the same thing. Follow the road to success in you to will be successful. Do not reinvent the wheel. My first copy of this book dates back to 1978. I've been playing drums for 36 years and still find this book helpful. The book contains the basics, but it is incredibly versitile and limited only by your imagination. One can take the patterns and split them up between different limbs. The book can be used as snare drums parts over a jazz feel beat. You can take some of the patterns and play them on the bell of the cymbal while playing a samba beat. You can use the patterns as drum fills at varying speeds, drums and styles. I reccomend this book to both the beginner and expert drum players. I bought this copy of the book as a gift to a friend who is interested in percussion playing and he is getting great use out of the book.

Reed's Syncopation is an endlessly challenging method book. It teaches control of time, feel and dynamics. It is especially useful for drummers who can use the various syncopated figures to play "against" ostinato rhythms.Other musicians can also benefit from the contents of this text. Although percussion notation (e.g. snare drum note heads in the "c"space) is used throughout the book, any player can adapt the figures to their own instrument, e.g. interpreting the rhythms as progressions within a scale or mode.Another aspect of this book is its suitability for all levels of players. Beginners will appreciate its "progressive" difficulty (easy to challenging) and more advanced players will see endless possibilities for rhythmic adventures.Beginners should use this book with a competent teacher, as it is easy to imagine that there is not much going on with each example.Highly recommended.

Best education tool for young drummers ever written, very hard for young beginners but worth the extra effort.

This is my second go round, used this book years ago when I was a beginner. So glad I'm using it again. There are so many ways to apply these exercises. Great for developing independence, phrasing, and all around drumming skills. Ted Reed did such an intelligent job here; he gave us an incredible learning tool.

Sometimes it's forgotten that a drummers main purpose is to keep rythm, everything past there is important, but rhythm is its foundation. Reed's book is perfect to set to a metronome and solidify your internal rhythm in context with a large amount of common drum patterns Ii.e. (eighths, triplets, sixteenths, etc.)Syncopation is an essential book to add to any drummers library. Five stars, highly recommend.

First off, an older edition of this was suggested as further reading when I took a class on human memory. Finding I had rather limited time already for the outside class materials I chose not to purchase it, and after the quarter ended I looked into it.I preordered this book from Amazon, waited dutifully for the paperback edition to get printed, and since it has arrived I've steadily made time for it. The book so far is an excellent read, covering many of the materials that were presented in my class, and a few that were not, all in an easy to understand format.The book is very easy to understand for this undergraduate psychology student, and approaches the topics as though you have no background in the field. I believe it strikes an excellent balance between a textbook, covering the essentials of the field, and a introduction to human memory. For now, while only a couple chapters in, it has been a great read and continues to compel me to find time to continue reading more. :)

IMy mother had the hardbound book. It had a nice, fabric covered blue cover with a silver imprint of the first chapter heading illustration. I loved the book as a child. When I grew up, I asked my mom if might have the book someday. She gave it to me. I have actually treasured it. So, when I was looking for a thank you gift for our catechetical team at the church, and with this being the 100th anniversary of the Fatima events, I wanted to give this book. I don't care that some people say it is a child's book. My mother and I enjoyed it as adults. I don't care that some people say it is not 100% accurate. It's a story, for heaven's sakes--not a documentary. How in the world can you write a story about something historical without adding dialogue, etc. If a person wasn't there, you do the best you can with the story as it has been told and you add what you need to make sense of what children may say to one another. Anyway, in searching for this book, I couldn't find a hardbound version like my book, and I don't mean that it had to have a blue cover with silver imprint. I was just looking for a hardbound closer to that--a presentation style book. If I couldn't find that, then this paperback is really as close as I could come. Sad about that. So, I couldn't give it five stars because it was not exactly what I was wanted. The content of the book is really what matters and it is a beautiful story of a miraculous series of events.

A very thorough and orthodox book on Fatima. My only concern is that the language was very old-fashioned and difficult for the average modern child to understand. I tried using it for read-alouds during catechism class, but most of the kids didn't get it, and I had to paraphrase.

Fatima story is a historical event that many people during the 6 months of apparitions were present at.And about 70, 000 witnessed the Miracle on October 13, 1917The Miracle was even written about in the secular newspaper which had just the day before scoffered about the apparitions.Many journalists, atheists, people of science and even those in the surrounding areas of the event that where not present at the actual site witnessed the same miracle.Unfortunately this particular book is written as a novel, rather than based on the historic facts.Dialogue added, motives added, and events edited to own imagination.Our Lady of Fatima by WalshMore about FatimaFatima 2017Good books for adultsThere r 2 small b ooks written about Francisco and JacintaUnfortunately with children books authors often take too much licenceIf u don't mind this as a novel instead of historical then it is very well written and easy to understandExamples:Francisco is made to seem like he didn't like to pray the Rosary. No where has anyone said factually that Francisco was any less interested then the girls in praying. In fact Francisco seems more directed to mental and contemplative prayer than the girls.Purely fictional addition.The children r said to spend time telling each other stories before the apparition of the angel but no where is that mentioned in factual books. They were playing games. Plus Lucia was the one that was a good story teller to entertain younger children when she helped take care of them.Jacinta and Francisco r said to say that Lucia saw the Lady too because they didn't want to be punished. No recall of their parents threatening them with punishment, just that mom and siblings didn't believe them. And they said they were telling the truth and Lucia could vouch for them.Just things that don't match up with anything written in historical books on the subject. And this just in the beginning. Which combind makes it more novel like when these things could easily been kept in line with the adult historical books written.

My daughter loves all of Mary Fabyan Windeatt's books. This is no exception. She's a wonderful writer for elementary school children. Even into junior high. I've used these books to create puppet shows for younger children as well (using the dialogue). One of the best writers for Saint stories!

Mary Fabyan Windeatt has a real gift for writing and touching your soul with the amazing and important lives of the saints. Her books are amazing, and this one is no exception. I don't know who gets more out of her books: children, or adults! This book is absolutely wonderful and worth every penny. I even bought a second copy to loan to people! So many people don't know about Our Lady of Fatima. Her messages are so timely and extremely important. A must read!

I have enjoyed reading this book as much as my daughter. We have been talking about our Mother and how we can ask her for intercessions and this book is nice to show her that these children had FAITH to ask our Mother and to do penance for their sins and the sins of the world.

Very interesting and inspiring true story of events in Portugal in 1917 involving 3 young children. Great book for children to read and learn about history. Also good for parents to read to them.

Dr. recommended this to us, so I got it for my 17 year old son. He wouldn't do it on his own for sure, but I assigned 3 chapters a week as a chore, the chapters are so short, that might take 30 minutes total. I look over his answers later. I think it is a fairly painless way to get your ADHD kid to take a look at themselves and some possible solutions.

The activities are short, but thoughtful. We've been doing them together since my teen can't muster enough focus for one more thing after trying hard all day at school. I can see how they lead the reader along into reframing how they think and feel and react to ADHD. I also bought the Mindfulness one and think they will make a great one-two punch to help my teen prep for college since he's still struggling in high school.

This was meant for teenagers that are 16-17 who can reflect on themselves. It is not meant for younger teens

My daughter, who has ADD, completed this book in three days. She loved it and found it really helpful. I recommend it!!!

This is a great workbook. It's relatable for my teen, not boring. When he sits down with this, it engages him.

I like that it acknowledges various challenges, and breaks them up into small activities to help the teen be introspective to what challenges they are having and provides ideas on how to tackle them to be successful.

Great lesson for individual counseling or group. I use these lessons with my students in small groups and individual counseling sessions.

Our 11 year old has the Kindle version and really appreciated the book as it sort of told her that she was ok and not so different as she has ADHD. The only problem with the Kindle version is the exercises which she had to do in her head so we also bought the book version so she could complete them.
