Just out some of these problems on the board and follow the advice of the book and you will see amazing things. My low kids are as fast as my high ones with mental math now. There are secrets though. If you just put the problems up and don't use the methods, expect nothing. You might find a useful video on YouTube that demonstrates a proper Number Talk. Get the book too though, because the mental math problems are nicely selected and organized to teach Common Core methods.

This is the best book! It was worth every penny. It is great for teaching mental math. I use it everyday and it is unbelievable what my 3rd graders can do. I have taught 3rd grade for 15 years and I have never had a class that can add, subtract and multiply in their heads like this! This book is FANTASTIC!

I learned about Number Talks from my colleagues and curriculum coaches and its my new favorite thing. It is great for math fluency/flexibility and it doesn't take a huge chunk of time from formal instruction. The kids really enjoy it and I always like hearing what they see.

It's a little dry but there are number talks for the grade levels that are explicitly designed. I just wish they had more of a variety for K. They all involve dots so I think I will try to pull ideas from the other grade levels mentioned.

I am reading this for work; I would have liked to see more ideas for first graders. I understand that six year olds are SIX! However, the curriculum is what it is. I adapt a bit when need be. The students are enjoying the Number Talk!

Totally awesome concept to teach math. I wish i could have been taught this way. My daughters elementary school is using this method to teach k-5 @Rowlett Elementary School. The school held a math night for the parents to intrudes this new curriculum to us and give us some informative tips along with explaining their reasoning to start using this curriculum throughout the campus. I couldn't wait to purchase this book and become more familiar with this type of teaching math to our children. I am in the process of trying to get the school to hold an all day parent training day as all whom attended wanted to know more. I wish I was taught math this way as a child. I have complete faith in this teaching concept that it will allow all the students to not just learn math and the basic skills, however, will equip them with a strong foundation giving them the ability to learn, solve, and have a love of math throughout not only their academic years but throughout their lives. What a completely awesome logical way to assist and assure our children success in math.only thru their academic years but throughouttheir as all whom

Great resource for classroom Teachers. It has thought out number strands to use for various addition and subtraction strategies you are focusing on. It’s also helpful to have the videos to watch along with the text.

This book is a must for any educator who wishes to develop problem solving strategies in their learners. I would even recommend it for a book study group, especially since it comes with a DVD--that really helps to gain an understanding in how students think about problems, as well as inadvertently demonstrating some great class management techniques. It outlines a lot of strategies that you can teach the kids in mini-lessons, and is very doable to add into your routine. I highly recommend it!!My only wish was that the DVD contained some classroom examples of 1st graders.

This is a good book. Tells how to cook the recipes on top of the stove, in the oven or out camping. There are some really tasty recipes in there. Some call for canned goods and not too many fresh items that are hard to keep fresh when camping Highly recommend this for anyone looking to start cooking in cast iron. It even tells you how to season your new pan and care for them.

I like this cookbook a lot. It has easy to follow recipes. Directions are given for indoor stovetop cooking as well as outdoor cooking with charcoal briquettes. It’s actually my favorite Dutch oven cookbook so far. There are recipes for all types of cast iron cooking, such as skillets and traditional pot style Dutch ovens.

Don't buy this book unless you like using canned food and refrigerator biscuits in your recipes. This is not what I expected at all.

One of my favorite cook books. One of the few cast iron cook books that give directions for both the stove, oven and campfire. The recipes are not complicated, but cook. I have given this cook book to several of my friends, and they were also VERY happy with it, and have enjoyed the recipes out of this book

great for fast meal planning before a trip.lots of great ideas, most are very easy to modify for different flavors as well.

This is a very sad book to read for anyone that loves Europe, its history, culture, people, architecture, etc. How could any people voluntarily allow itself to be displaced in their own homelands? The author tells the story of post-war immigration into Europe through the decades and the total unwillingness of Europe's leaders to address its long term consequences. All debate over the huge numbers of immigrants and their offspring from all over the world has been shut-down by the mainstream political parties by implying anyone who opposes this transformation is racist, xenophobic, nativist, etc.The displacement of Europeans by foreign peoples in Europe is now a foregone conclusion. The Europeans are dying faster than they are reproducing while Muslims, Africans, Arabs and other foreigners are reproducing their populations rapidly. The author explains the implications of all this for the future of Europe.All those that love Europe will have to come to terms with a prolonged, chaotic and painful departing of what was once the shining light of a civilization that accomplished so much everywhere in the world. Very depressing.

Murray frames the moral dilemma facing the west through a quote from the prophetic 1973 book The Camp of the Saints. Author Jean Raspail saw ‘A million poor wretches, armed only with their weakness and their numbers, overwhelmed by misery, encumbered with starving brown and black children, ready to disembark on our soil, the vanguard of the multitudes pressing hard against every part of the tired and overfed West. I literally saw them, saw the major problem they presented, a problem absolutely insoluble by our present moral standards. To let them in would destroy us. To reject them would destroy them.’An established journalist, Murray had the resources to travel throughout Europe to view the immigration problem firsthand. He spoke to immigrants on the island of Lesbos, the slums of Malmö, the streets of Paris. He thoroughly appreciates their motives in coming to Europe and in the early chapters appears convinced that the majority of them have no motive other than to improve their lives.Later chapters, the bulk of the book, go into extensive detail about the Islamic immigrants. They do not want to integrate. They have no respect for the host cultures. They are given to crime, especially rape. Their parts of the major cities – Paris, Stockholm, Berlin – become no-go zones for police, firemen and ambulances. They institute Sharia law among themselves and reject the host countries. Many other authors have described what he saw in France ,Germany,Holland and Sweden.A larger question than why the Muslims behave as they do is why Europeans allow it to happen. Murry recites the well-known history of strife between Islam and Christianity, from Charles Martel's victory at Tours in 732 through the 1683 defeat of the Ottomans at Vienna. Islam is a known enemy of Christianity. Why are they allowed?Politicians give a number of excuses for admitting refugees. Europe is not having enough children to fill the workplaces. Diversity makes society more enjoyable. More workers make for a richer country. It is not practical to keep them out. European values demand that all comers be treated humanely. Murray assesses and dismisses each argument in turn. Then he turns to a core thesis. Europe is simply tired. European philosophy and culture crested at the end of the 19th century. It had nowhere to go except nihilism and hedonism, and those are the paths it has chosen. Europe is allowing the Muslims to take over because it hasn't the strength to defend itself, and does not believe it has anything worth defending. Murray's arguments are well made, and his knowledge of European history, philosophy and literature are impressive.The argument is encapsulated in his treatment of Michel Houellebecq's novel Submission, about the coming to power of an Islamist government in France. The book was widely condemned both by Muslims and by mainstream politicians fearful of same. Europe has given up on freedom of speech when it comes to Islam. Too many events have shown that it is too dangerous.It is the politicians who are especially cowardly. The people by and large, and in increasing numbers, don't want widespread Muslim immigration. Yet the politicians keep the doors open and keep telling saccharine stories about how wonderful it all is. The common man is able to contrast the stories with everyday reality and conclude that they are lying.Here we come to some points that Murray could explore further. There are huge contradictions between a Sharia law society and modern liberalism. Treatment of women and homosexuals would top the list. Yet, liberals continue to push for open borders. He notes cases such as that of Pym Fortuyn in the Netherlands in which liberals came to oppose immigration (and, too often, to die for taking such a stance). He notes that Jews have been driven from historical Jewish quarters and are very often victims of attacks by Muslims. He does not whatsoever go into the question of who owns the media that covers up Muslim crime and broadcasts the message of diversity. He mentions Soros a few times, but fails to note that Soros is only the most prominent of many.Genetics is another topic that deserves more attention. Murray would credit the differences between the immigrants and the host populations as purely cultural. Liberals believe the same, and fervently hope that in a few generations the immigrants will become indistinguishable from the host populations. Findings by scientists in genetics,evolution and intelligence give the lie to these happy dreams. The populations are genetically different. They took thousands of years to evolve traits that enable them to optimally fill the niches they do. To survive in a harsh climate, bands of Northern Europeans developed altruism, tolerance and high intelligence. Said altruism has them project these traits onto others and welcome them into the society.Murray's last two chapters are satisfying summations: what might have been, and what will be. Most authors contrive a happy ending to a book like this. Murray does not. He envisions a Western Europe in which pockets of traditional people muddle through in small concentrations far from the cities. I myself emigrated to Ukraine, the other side of the Viasgrad countries. Though it is certainly beset with problems of its own, there is very little immigration. Not enough economically to entice anybody, and no historical guilt to impel the natives to accept refugees. Last year the town of Yagotin, not far from Kyiv, forced Ukraine's president to go back on a plan to resettle 250 Syrians in their midst. There were no cries of anguish from liberals.There is hope for Western Europe. The millennial generation is waking up. One of the most heartening books I've seen recently is Generation Identity, translated into most European languages. Young Europeans are once again getting a sense of themselves and finding some purpose in life. Anyone who has been paying attention to geopolitics over the last couple of years is aware of the migration crisis that hit Europe particularly hard in the summer of 2015. Millions of migrants from all over the Middle East, Africa and Asia traveled thousands of miles across dangerous terrain and treacherous waters to reach Europe's shores. In the aftermath of the original crisis, many began to question what Europe would look like in the future given the often extreme cultural differences existing between the migrants and their hosts. Douglas Murray attempts to answer this question and his findings are well-researched, while being unsettling and depressing at the same time.The book doesn't start off by discussing the events of 2015, but instead opts to provide the reader with a broader picture of a problem spanning decades. Starting off after WWII, the author shows how the politicians encouraged migrant workers to fill the gaps left by a diminished workforce.The understanding at the time of this policy, for both the politicians and the public, was that these workers would be guests who would eventually go back to their country of origin. When that didn't occur, the politicians turned on the public who were alarmed by their changing society. This leads to chapters on revenge, guilt, and the silencing of dissidents, (sometimes permanently), towards the immigration policies.The latter half of the book focuses on the migration crisis of recent years featuring discussions about Europe's culture via artists and authors, as well as what the implications are for the future of Europe. To summarize these chapters quite succinctly, it becomes clear that the politicians are at odds with the people and the future of an indigenous population with no sense of direction or purpose is a grim one indeed.This wasn't an easy book to read, but I feel it is a necessary one to get through in light of recent events. The descriptions of the dangers of an empty culture with no answers for the human condition or true progress for society at large particularly hit home for me, as modern culture has little to offer a person other than entertainment. The text relates all the instability, attacks and events that have occurred over the past few years clearly and leaves the reader wondering what will happen to a country where the world has been let inside of it with no real definition of what it should stand for. With no answers or real leadership in sight, the continent may be sleepwalking towards disaster.I'd recommend reading this if you're at all interested in how Europe got to the point that it's at now. This problem has been ongoing for decades and the results of ignoring it may lead to uprisings and chaos.

I bought this book on a whim (the author was new to me) and then had doubts as to whether I could actually read it. Let me explain. I've read a number of historicals where the heroine was captured by pirates, sold into white slavery, forced to become a concubine, coerced to marry a monster, or sometimes even worse (I read a lot). Terrible horrors were visited on these women over a prolonged period. Graphic abuse of women is particularly difficult for me as a man, husband, & father to stomach (I offer no excuses). My brother is fond of saying, "You can't un-see something". These types of stories have haunted me dreadfully, so I now try to avoid them. Confessions of a Courtesan is not one of these books. In fact in many ways, this book is an antidote for these other stories. Bad things happen to Elizabeth, but this story is about recognizing the peril of one's situation and having the courage to do what has to be done, the immeasurable value of real friendships, and the salvation that true love offers. It is a wonderful story, told extremely well, while remaining true to actual people and events. I enjoyed this book immensely and would describe it as a must read. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. I won't soon forget Elizabeth Armistead.

The general storyline of this book is a good read and you'll find yourself wanting to know what happens next. However, so much of the areas that could've been poignant are taken up by steamy bedroom moments. The main character is a very sexual being which lays doubt for a reader when it seems every man she sleeps with for money also seems to stimulate her. Courtesans by the very nature of their work may have found some of their associations pleasurable but certainly not all. The book often comes across as soft core pornography as well as a romance novel. I was truly hoping to see more into the mind of the character but she appears to have very little mind. If anyone is interested in a rags to riches through use of the body as well as the mind, I recommend "Forever Amber." It's a far better read with a plot that's been called the English Gone With the Wind.

This is normally a book I would never choose to read. But someone in my book club selected it and I’m glad she did. I was pleasantly surprised. It’s well written and I enjoyed the journey through the Georgian era. I also really liked the story of the heroine’s experiences, as well as the love story. The book had me curious about the various characters within, and I started looking up some of them online, and reading a little bit about them. I was surprised by how much of this book is based on facts (minus the unknown details of course). The Prince of Wales, the Derbys, Dorset, Daly, Fox, Fitzpatrick etc. I’ve been reading about some of these real life characters and they’re fascinating. Goes to show how some of the best “fictional” characters are just real ones!

I truly enjoyed this book. It is part Georgian Historical (takes place during George III's battle not to lose the American Colonies) and part biographical novel of the life of Elizabeth Fox, Queen of the Cypriots and wife of George Fox, a notable statesman. Elizabeth loses her brother and Mother to an epidemic that leaves her actor father blind. She takes care of him on the small amount he earns begging until she loses him one day. She is unable to find work and is care for by Mr. Armistead, a hairdresser and molly who is being blackmailed and needs to leave the country. She had fallen in love with him before she knew he was gay and with no other options, decides to let him go ahead with his plans to sell her to a good London bordello. She stays there five years and learns the difficulties and dangers facing a woman of her occupation. When she is thrown out through no fault of her own, she decides to make the best of it and wagers the men who caused her downfall to make her the best courtesan of her time and she becomes that through luck, self improvement, hard work and intelligence.Lizzy is as steadfast as her literature namesake and she is a women who has heart and warmth in a business where it is every woman for herself. Her breaking her own rule of never falling in love is surprising and dangerous. Rooting for Elizabeth to make it through the pitfalls of age, fortune and time is easy. The story never flags and the pace keep you interested. The whims of fortune that takes Elizabeth off the street and makes her a part of the great or important men of her time gives you a snapshot of the Georgian era. I cannot recommend this story enough.

Loved the beginning of the book. Hale writes a credible account of Georgian England, the plight of an unprotected girl that ends up with a predictable outcome. When I picked up the book, I had no idea I was reading an account of an actual historical figure. Life in the high priced brothel was both interesting and brutal, but the book lost steam when Elizabeth Armistead has her Eliza Doolittle moment. It became repetitive and I skimmed more than read the second half. Still, you can't deny the subject is fascinating and as it is based on truth, and interesting read.

I think this book is an excellent read for several reasons.1. The perspective of character. Its really rare in regency romances for the main character to be a courtesan. 99% of these regency romances follow such a formulatic pattern you could just switch the names out of the characters and change a few royal titles and have the same book with a different name.2. The characters are well fleshed out and likable. I found myself cringing thinking of how the main character became to be in her profession but indeed she ended up on the better end of the spectrum of the profession she joined. I was cheering for her when she decided she wanted to be the BEST courtesan in all of England. I even liked the male characters who she interacted with - even some of her clients.3. The plot isn't predictable. There are twists and turns I didn't see coming at all.So yes this is a book I will be keeping on my Kindle to reread as I think thats the measure of a good book- if you desire to reread it or wish for a sequel in the series.

I teach second grade and my students cannot get enough of these books. They are motivating and accessible to even my most reluctant readers. Each book also comes with a fun little activity section in the back, which my students love (e.g., how to make ice cream in a jar, how to make your own puppet pal). I even had one student meticulously copy all of the "how to" sections so he can try the at home. I would recommend these books to any kid- or overgrown kid- who loves to laugh!

I am shocked that this was part of our schools curriculum as an option for reading material, and I have let his teacher/ principle know. I continue to struggle to find quality literature for my children that does not necessarily include the classics. These books are filled with phrases like "girls are stupid, my sister is stupid and my mother is stupid" as well name calling "you're a freak" and bullying with little resolution. They are not isolated incidents but they are attitudes and language used thought the books. This is not what I want my kids reading, living or learning about. Returned these the day we got them.

My daughter is a second grade teacher and her students love these books! They fly off the shelves in her classroom.
