About the Author

Geoff Johns is an award-winning writer and one of the most popular contemporary comic book writers today. The book opens with the Secret Society of Supervillains planning their next nefarious act of villainy. Awesome. Ah, but it lasts just a single page as the Justice League with Lex Luthor burst in and take them down off panel. Quite frankly I don't understand why the subtitle of the book is "Injustice League" since the Injustice League never makes an appearance. I can only assume Geoff Johns is referring to the fact that Luthor is made a member of the Justice League but theoretically he joined to perform justice. Johns work on the Justice League seems to resemble a sine wave in that the fun factor goes up and down. Trinity Wars was a depressing mess but Forever Evil was a blast and that includes Justice League vol. 5. The conclusion of Forever Evil promised an even greater battle, this time between the Anti-Monitor and Darkseid but Justice League vol. 6 is merely the prelude to the war.Having received tremendous praise for helping save the Earth Lex Luthor decides he wants to become an actual full-fledged member of the justice League. The reason he gives is that he wants to team with the Justice League in order to prevent the greater calamity that looms, in particular whatever force it was that destroyed Earth 3 and caused the Crime Syndicate to seek a new world. Luthor seems to be sincere and even maintains his story under the influence of Wonder Woman’s magic truth forcing lasso. Meanwhile, reverberations from the Crime Syndicate are still being felt. Superwoman is pregnant in jail and Power Ring’s ring is searching for a new owner while signaling the Anti-Monitor like a beacon.After the fun of Forever Evil Geoff Johns is clearly giving the Justice League a breather before the Darkseid War. If you can call a book where literally the entire world is at risk from something called the ‘Amazo Virus’ a breather. Most of the book revolves around the question of whether Lex Luthor is legit in seeking to save Earth or whether it’s just one more scheme to gain power. I didn’t really get into the Jessica Cruz/Ring of Volthoom storyline but I’m glad to see the Crime Syndicate isn't completely done. Superwoman is still around and *hmmm* I think Owlman was never captured. There’s an appearance by the Doom Patrol which was a little interesting but then it was over with no real resolution. Overall I give the book better than average marks but it does feel like the car is idling between the two big events. Obviously Johns can’t just continue to have relentless action but this is a very dialogue heavy book and although it had its moments there were stretches that dragged for me. I will say the book was good enough that I'll be picking up the next volume. I've been hugely disappointed by some of the DC franchises I've tried lately including Justice League Dark and Suicide Squad so I'm glad to see the flagship DC superhero team is holding up well. Now bring on the Anti-Monitor and Darkseid.

I really hate how DC breaks up their JL Volumes. Make sure you read "Forever Evil" first as there is a huge gap between this volume and volume 5.As far as this actual issue; these comics are really starting to get good. Adding "reformed" villains into mix has really made the story's alot more interesting.

The Justice League title has largely been strong in the New 52, both revitalizing and maintaining the popularity of its members. This book signals a new chapter for the League, as three new characters are introduced into the ranks alongside Superman,Wonder Woman, and the rest. As is usually the first noticed quality of any comic book, the art is integral to this collection. While the Justice League title has often been home to greats Lee, Reis, and D'Anda, some of the chapters felt week to me. I felt as if I was reading a mediocre-sandwich: good bookends, but a lousy middle. Reis and Mahnke deliver well, with each playing to their strengths, however I somehow felt both artists were not living up to some of their previous work. This was hard for me to state, as Reis is one of my favorites. I have no doubt that he was busy with several projects at the time, but come on, Justice League is a title that deserves top-notch stuff. The art preceding the Amazo arc is just terrible; plain, dull, and inconsistent best fit the style. If you've read any other review for this collection, you've no doubt heard (or seen) how spectacular Jason Fabok's art is in Justice League. Let me reassure you, he certainly is. Now, it's not quite perfect, but he is still learning about these characters and will no doubt improve over time. The Amazo arc is certainly the strong point of this book, and probably is why that particular image was selected for the cover. The writing is still good, although I felt a major slow-done compared to the previous arc in Forever Evil. While it can be expected that there will be a bit of a lull between major events, some of the pages were trudged through, with only mildly interesting conflict in the Doom Patrol, and a rather ho-hum origin of the new Power Ring. Part of the challenging nature of the Justice League title is giving focus to each existing character, while also trying to create new and interesting plot. Johns was more than able to shine the light on dozens of characters in Blackest Night. However he not only failed to flesh out some of the new players, but also neglected some key League members. The saving grace, in addition to the Amazo Visrus, was Johns' writing of Lex Luther. He really nailed this character and made him an even more interesting read.Over all, this book is well worth the purchase, but it does not quite deliver the same power and action previous Justice League stories have. Sometimes change is good, other times it is best remembered as that one villain that never showed up again.

Standard Geoff Johns fare. The storytelling pulls you in, makes you invested in the characters, and before you know it you consume an entire story as easy as drinking a cup of water. You don't have to know 75 years of history to appreciate the story, but his stories will make you appreciate 75 years of history.

Cool. The costume humor is kind of fun in a super dark story. Superb artwork and the extra sketches and concepts we get in the digital collections are always welcome. On to Vol 7!

This is a great book but you have to get Forever Evil with it. I assure you that you won't regret it.

collecting issues 30-39. this brings the conclusion to the Forever evil arc and the Amazo Virus. personally this was my favorite story since throne of atlantis. I really enjoy Geoff Johns Justice League.

Though the ending is a bit anti-climactic, the little bits of interaction in between is well written. Characterization comes in full boost for Lex Luthor. Really want to see more of him. It almost looks like he is the evil version of Bruce Wayne. I dig it!

This map is fantastic--if you're on the road all day every day and need to find every nook and cranny as well as how to get there. This is not the map to get if you just need a regular city map. However for the ambulance driver, utility tech, delivery driver etc, this map is perfect.As far as the first persons complaints--again, they don't waste space with overlap, they keep the same scale on every page--no squeezing the little town into 1 page.You will get used to the page numbers on an everyday basis--they also can be looked up from the front map foldout, find area, look up number and go. It also is used for the CD usage.The roads are easy enough to follow if you note where they leave the previous page...but this is not the "in-town for a visit" map.Enjoy!

We found this book to be a helpful companion to our GPS while house-hunting in the Michigan sticks. The only drawback comes from the format itself - lots of page-turning. But that's part and parcel of the product so I can't complain. No accuracy errors that we've found yet. Great reference.

Well this is an impressive book, I'm sure there are numerous really good reviews so I'll add something that might be a new observation, reading about British (and Irish) Counsel Roger Casement it reminded me that I read about him before and I looked up and found the story in Charles Mann book 1493 uncovering the new world Columbus created. It's always a thrill to find like a intellectual Easter egg especially if it's unexpected. One of the strengths of this book was how it introduced us to so many persons that are little noticed by history but had large impacts on the world, they came together to fight against one of the great crimes of the day King Leopold's rape and murderous rule of the Congo, they were rather successful over time although the guilty as is almost always the case in these types of crimes went largely unpunished accept for how they are view in history. Reverend William Sheppard sounds like an amazing man, so too with E. D. Morel, if it wasn't for this book I would know nothing of their stories. The difficulty of conducting this research when the main principals did everything they could to destroy the cover over there deeds, the remoteness of the area and the time period, makes it a miracle that this book could be written at all. Very glad I read it I've created a new shelf called Excellent History books just for books like this although their can't be many such books that reach this depth and understanding, it will always stand out in that shelf as a must read history book.

So I don't usually do leave reviews of books but I had to this time. I bought this books about 8 Pontus ago but I read the last few weeks only and I think it was the perfect timing with what is going on in my life right now as I'm making big choices concerning my future right now. If I didn't read this book right I probably would have missed on what might just be my life goal and something I plan on focusing for a good part of my life once I get more ready for it. I know this is not much of a book review as of now but I just wanted to show how much the story of my people have affected me and how I really want to do something about all the suffering that have been going and keeps on happening now. I myself grew up in Kinshasa, my dad was an army colonel who fought against Mobutu in the 90's and had to flee the country for a few years because of that. This year (2017) I'm about tombe 18 and I surprised that it's only now that I get to know the story of my people and what that so-called King Léopold II have done. Throughout my read I came to decide that one day I want to be a change in my countries history too, a positive change, I want to be the African voice to change the Congo and make it one of the great countries. I know I sound a little too exited now and kind of dreaming but I'm still a kid so I guess it's okay right? One day hopefully once I do start making a change someone finds this "review" and call me out on it.

I bought this book on a whim while on vacation because it was a Kindle Daily Deal, and wound up finishing it in just three days. I have no real background in Africa, Belgium, or colonialism, but Hochschild does a phenomenal job of weaving together a compelling story that brings a forgotten and disgraceful era to life.The story is just incredible. Chronologically, Hochschild does a great job at tying together a complex story over decades and even centuries, beginning with tale of the European discovery of the Congo river and then honing in on Leopold's obsession with colonial expansion and the Congo specifically. He describes the casual brutality of Leopold's regime extremely effectively before skillfully introducing the figures in the movement that rose up to make the world aware of what was happening in Africa. Along the way, the author does a great job of putting the events into historical context and addressing likely counterarguments made be pro-Leopold sources (e.g. why there was outrage about the Congo specifically despite equally brutal colonial regimes elsewhere in Africa, the pre-existence of continental African slavery, etc). Hochschild does a great job of developing characters and presents a mountain of irrefutable evidence to back up his main arguments, all of which is done in an extremely engaging manner. The author's epilogue, written 10 years after the initial publication, is also even handed and insightful.If I have any complaint with the book, it's that the author sometimes makes leaps of judgement in the narrative that aren't necessary, especially when it comes to speculating whether certain characters in the story previously l crossed paths or allowed specific people/events to privately influence their decisions. The story is compelling enough without these speculations. He also (rightfully) demonizes Leopold and other figures in the regime, but spends less time characterizing anti-colonial figures whose backgrounds and personal lives are shady at best. While certain players are demonstrably more despicable than others, I felt that Hochschild could have been a little more even handed in describing the faults of his protagonists at times, if for nothing else than to appear more impartial as a narrator and derail his critics.Overall, the book is outstanding and I would recommend it to anybody looking for a fast paced story, context about the European scramble for Africa, or insight as to how Africa developed through the 20th century.

It was awesome just closing my eyes and listening to this presentation. My son who is 10 came in when I was almost done and asked if I could start over and listen to it with him. (One of his middle names is Patrick and he has a devotion to the saint.This story presents not just the great saint but the man. His trials in school, in ministry and even the literal trial he underwent. It is very well done and I am thankful to have listened to such an excellent production.
