This book is laughably difficult to use in a course setting. The shortcomings in consideration for usability and extensibility to the classroom setting by the authors significantly undermine their credibility on the topic of systems engineering.Strike 1 - The table of contents has no subtopics or any indications of what is in each chapter aside from a headline. For example "8 - Detail Design and Development". Say I want to review for a test, or find something quickly? Tough, read the whole chapter again.Strike 2 - There are no indications of what chapter you're in on any given page. For example, I flip to randomly selected page 242, which has heading 7.4 for Profitability Evaluation. This is actually in chapter 8, which you can only determine by flipping backwards until you find the intro page, which still doesn't even have the chapter number!!!! You have to find it in small print on the bottom of the first page of the chapter. This book is insanely monotonous so its easy to lose your place or accidentally go too far if for instance your instructor notes "check chapter 11, Section 5.3".Strike 3 - The index must have been an afterthought, as it hasn't included a single topic that I've wanted to review later. Want to brush up on how TPM's (Technical performance measures) are defined or used? Tough! Start flipping pages! I've tested numerous topics as I run across them in the text by flipping back to the index and laughing each time they are not there (e.g. SEMP (systems engineering management plan), PMP (program management plan), etc.).Seriously do not but this book until they fix these glaringly obvious flaws. I've been trying to find a contact for the authors or the publisher to no avail. I fault my instructor for selecting this book, obviously he has not tried to use it.

This book provides a good overview of the systems engineering discipline either as a academic subject or career-based.Pros:-Breaks down common model, approaches, and analysis-Uses "real-life" examples and applies processes and analysis previously mentioned-Does "build on" previous materialCons:-The examples are pretty closely linked, more variety would have been better for those outside certain industries-Certain approaches are just glossed over-Sometimes it's too "academic". Most SE is real-world and should be applicable to many fields/disciplines, whereas this book names it as a sole discipline

This book is almost like a thesis paper...small print and very dense. Using it for a master's course which, unfortunately, only posts online modules that don't further explain the book. it may be helpful if there's a professor to walk you along, but for online courses it's awful. Maybe professionals can use it as reference...I don't know.

This book is extremely repetitive and wordy without needing to be. I'm confident that the same content could have been delivered more effectively in less than half as many pages.If you open the book up to a random page and read any sentence, you'll see that it's a bit too formal and (likely) absurdly conservative - the author(s) feel the need to say "or" many times, to ensure they're covering each possible base. The difficulty in conveying useful information with this style of writing is compounded by the fact that they'll then say the same thing again, and again, and again in different ways using the same type of language. It's the type of book you'll find in one of Kafka's nightmares.

This is a required textbook for a course I'm currently taking. The book, while filled with a tremendous amount of information, is too long-winded for it's own good when discussing concepts and ideas. Unless this book is specifically required for a course you're taking, there are much better textbooks and material online than this book.

This book was obviously written by engineers, and I am one, so I should know. It is visually boring, has absolutely no color, no photos, no use of "side bars" or any of the features you'd find in a quality textbook. It is quite painful to read and the font styles/numbering of the sections is so rudimentary that you have a hard time paying attention. It's so sad that the author's actually think their pitiful black and white drawings and charts are a such great feature that they mentioned it in the "what's new" section.I'm not saying that the topics are relevant or the information isn't important, but I am saying that it is presented in such a way that at many times goes so far into the minutiae that you can't figure out where you are anymore.The chapter on evaluating costs is especially cumbersome and turned a relatively simple set of topics into something much harder than it had to be. While it's nice to understand the equations behind the theory, this is 2017 and we have financial calculators and finance functions in Excel. Why not teach us how to use them?I bought this book because it was required for my Master's in Engineering coursework but for the ungodly high text-book price, it's a rip off.

This textbook was assigned in my grad level electrical engineering course. It's very readable. If you are a student with no experience in systems engineering or engineering project management, I recommend this book because it does a good job of explaining real world practices. Upon graduation, if you are fortunate enough to find an engineering job, the content in this book will help you do a better job of design and management.

I used this book in a class that was part of my Masters degree. It was probably in the top 3 of most useful books to me at the time and I used it throughout my Masters degree program as a reference. I have also used it a few times in my career as a reference.

Given the ingrained human reluctance to talk to strangers, will, not technique, is the real issue. Much of the book is taken up with motivational pep-talks to get readers to initiate contact (one agonizing exercise suggests "walk through the mall and just say hello to ten people as you pass them"); in a world where everyone feels at a loss for words, Fine argues, saying virtually anything makes one a "hero." Unfortunately, it doesn't necessarily make one a great conversationalist. The heart of Fine's methodology consists of long lists of icebreakers and inviting questions that she instructs readers to memorize and regurgitate as needed to jump-start and sustain conversations, and these read like rather bad small-talk-dull ("How has the internet affected your life?"), stilted ("Do you have a personal motto or creed?") and awkward ("Describe an embarrassing moment you've had."). I would put this book in the category of "professional self help". Because of my desire to further my career, I have strayed away from the enjoyment of fiction and my David Baldacci obsession to this genre. I received this book on Saturday, 5/27/18, and finished it within two days. It is a very short read, around ~200 pages, large print, small pages, and has several comic-style strips, and long lists taking up space, making it a quick read (~3 hours).As far as content goes, the book actually does deliver. It has some very detailed advice regarding speaking to people from starting a conversation, continuing a conversation, transitions, topics of conversation, etc. The reason I knocked off one star is because each category the author gives taxonomies (IE: The 5 types of conversation killers), but does not go on to direct the reader on how to correct this behavior. One other pitfall I found in the book is the amount of "confidence building" or "ego stroking" the author conveys, although I understand the audience and reason for this, it is a little too much at times.Overall I think this book is great, especially for people who experience anxiety with social situations as I do. With that being said, the book does not do the work for you, but it does prepare you on how to effectively make social situations more successful. I even gave it to my intern, who is a recent college grad, and has been open about her anxiety at professional mixers, and she found it very helpful. Some of the advice can easily be implemented very successfully the same day as reading, which I found to give me a big confidence boost.

Seems like other books in this genre assume there is some level of social competence in the reader. Which, I suppose there might be some use to that, but this does not make that assumption. This book is just what I needed. Specific examples, specific suggestions to say, It has already helped me to make small talk. I just had to memorize a few phrases she suggested to get things going, and other phrases for what to say when the conversation has hit a dead spot, and the rest of the conversation takes care of itself.

I was shocked at how poorly executed this book was considering the high rating. Of course every book has flaws, but unfortunately the advice and techniques given in this book just don’t seem to apply to this century. Truly the techniques and scenarios given in this book seem to apply to the 1980’s. No serious profesiobal in a networking setting would ever attempt the majority of the techniques proposed in this book. Truly, don’t waste the money on this - look elsewhere.

I've been in sales for most of my professional life but have actually learned from this book. I bought it for a family member who has benefited as well. Small talk and connecting with others is, I believe, a basic skill that everyone should learn by young adulthood. Sadly, with today's technology obsessions, it's a skill that is dying out.

It covers everything from networking events to dating - airports and air time. It is a good book, a useful resource, and was an insightful read.

It all starts with saying hi and doing a little small talk, but the author follows through to developing relationships to some extent. If you sit in the corner during a fun party because you don't know anyone, you can really this sort of medicine, but even the most gregarious of us is likely to have a potentially life changing experience. This book was recommended by a friend who, I believe may have either a familial connection or friendship with the author. I found the idea a bit horrifying--a young girl's father is murdered when she is quite young. I cannot fault in any way the veracity of the reporting for the research material is extensive and well documented. Unfortunately, the writing is so sterile that it just sits on the page with no life. I wish there was more suspense, more follow-up, more color to what is basically a pretty dull recital of facts. It has more of a feel of news reporting or of being a research paper than of storytelling. This is a draft copy of what could be a really compelling story of life in rural mid-America during the fifties and what happened to an entire town when one woman would not/could not follow her husband's expectations and how because of her husband's inability to accept her, she became a victim of domestic violence. I hope the author considers revising it for she does seem to be a talented writer; she just needs help in telling her story.

Thank you for writing this book. I grew up in Jackson Twp. about 10 miles west of Circleville. I remember that day and my brother and his friend jumped in the car and drove to town to help. The baby who was born 6 weeks after was in school with my daughter. My good friend who graduated with me was in the Navy and on a destroyer in the Pacific at the time. Someone on the ship, knowing he was from Circleville, told him the town had just blown up! He said he will never forget that. As none of us will forget but so glad you interviewed and shared this with us. God Bless You and all the families.

Thank you for writing this book. My father was a patrolman on duty at the time and is mentioned on page 71. I was 10 at the time and remember vividly. Well written with a well-researched pen.

Being from the state this occurred in, and even having family who lives in the town, this was quite a surprising story. I read all thectrue crime type books I can find, so found it odd that I’d never heard about this case before. Wat happens when an overly controlling man gets the idea that his wife may be stepping out on him, he uses an unusual form of retribution. Well worth the read.

Just finished reading the book "When Normal Blew Up", loved the book and it was so well written, couldn't put it down. Cannot believed that happened and we never knew the whole story, I felt like I knew all the people involved from the way the writer told her story.

The book was somewhat hard to follow with all of the people involved. Parents,children,cousins,sisters,brothers.etc. It best served the author to put the story together finally and find resolution.

Of interest primarily to those who grew up in the Circleville, OH, area in the 1960's. Excellent interviews with the families involved in the incident. Good analysis of the social norms in place during that era.

This is a incredible story of a tragedy that occurred in my hometown in 1967. Almost 14 at the time my family & I were in the crowd of onlookers watching the fire as this tragedy unfolded.... Joni Foster has done a wonderful job telling us what happened that day & letting us know the the victims .... I could not put this book down;it is a real page turner ! I can't imagine what Ms Foster went thru as she gathered the info & put into words...but she did a superb job!!

The author is a most impressive teacher and artist and her love for Pysanky jumps off of every page. This book is a lovely addition to the library of the experienced writer/artist, and a must-have for the beginner or fan.

This book is loaded with truly exceptionally beautiful designs and ideas, but it is not for the Pysanky beginner. It should be used by - and will benefit - someone who already has a lot of practice in the basics of kistka wax applications and very fine-line drawing. For the experienced Pysanky maker, this book should be on their reading and idea-creating list.

This little book is a must have for any beginner when it comes to decorating Eggs. My head is just full of ideas now.

Beautiful eggs that I have not seen before. This book holds so many different design styles, from Japanese Stencil, Cross Stick lace, patchwork quilts to freestyle art!!! I am so looking forward to tackle some of these designs and I'm inspired by this book to venture out in a more playful way with my eggs now.

Bought this to help me teach a class on Ukrainian Easter Egg craft or pysanky... I absolutely love this book, gave all my students great ideas! the visuals are great and really got my creativity going. The other books I bought gave me a lot of great information regarding traditional designs and this book went further to modern day egging. This beautifully illustrated and well-written book shows what is possible with Pysanki egg decoration. It is rich with many photos of traditional and contemporary eggs created using this technique. The book not only inspires with examples, but also teaches - how to dye, draw with melted wax and redye the eggs, step by step. I have checked my library's copy out every year for 8 years, and bought a copy to get my brother's family started.Pysanki eggs are great for Easter and also as Christmas ornaments. Examples from the book, team/school logos, flags and quilting patterns work very well as subjects for your eggs, until you start getting ideas of your own.

Over rated, sadly created the market of 'business novels' that executives can read as they lounge in first class between drinks and naps. Your 7th grader could figure his method. If this book seems revolutionary it means you a re a dunce. Nowadays you can get them as audible books and spare the reader the reading. Smoke some weed while reading and it will seem deeper than it is.

Hard to follow, partially because the explanations were specific to the manufacturing industry and sometimes the logic was not as obvious to me as to the author. The excerpts from The Goal, however, were excellent and I plan to get that book. I found a reference to another book on Theory of Constraints called Tame the Flow: Hyper-Productive Knowledge-Work Management that I am going to get.

I am surprised how we can get away with going through college without some basic courses that cover toc and process engineering, regardless of the major. A critical topic I dare say

If you have not read any of this man's books you are seriously missing out. My husband had to read a couple of his books for an MBA class and he hates reading novels so he turned it over to me to give him the basic points of the book. The books were so good he even read them and so I bought this for him for christmas. You learn so much from these books; there's so much you can apply directly to your own workplace and life in general. So glad I bought this.

I bought the Kindle version of this book. I am sure this makes some good points, but I did only read about 30 percent into it. There were several spelling//wording/format errors. Because of this I am not sure if this was the reason I found it hard to follow, or if it was the way the book was written originally. I returned it for a refund.

Scarce book from Goldratt's wonderworld.

Its a little smart for my taste but on the second read it becomes much clearer as to what Goldratt is trying to depict. Its a great illustration of where to move resources in modern manufacturing today, and that your problems are not always what they seem.
