Feel the Fear . . . and Do It Anyway

From School Library Journal

Jeffers discusses the crippling effects of fear in her personal life and explains how she formulated a course of action for conquering it. Her answers are simple, her course of action difficult only because it requires courage. She explains how fear is based on the uncertainty of change and the lack of positive self image. She avoids psychological lingo, and includes many case studies about careers and changes in personal life both of which are beginning to cause anxiety in many teens. Her message is reassuring: choices are not opportunities to make mistakes, but valid paths to growth, whichever path we take. She addresses the fundamental cause of fear the belief that ``I can't handle it!'' Feel the Fear is an important book, for while some young people are more crippled by insecurity that others, many do believe that the path to adulthood is fraught with dangers. Fear is doubtlessly a handicap with which they must learn to cope. Jennifer John Reavis, Episcopal High School, Bellaire Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. This will sound so corny and cliche, but this book changed my life. Seriously, it did. Now, with that said, what Susan Jeffers has to say in, "Feel The Fear...And Do It Anyway", isn't anything that's earth shattering or even new. Most of it is probably even things you may have thought yourself. However, the simplicity of what she says is delivered in a way that DOES make it fresh, new, and life changing.I had been stuck in what a friend referred to as a "fur-lined rut" for well more than a decade. I knew I wanted to "unstick" myself, but just couldn't seem to make it happen. While reading through this the first time, I began putting the tenants into practice and began to see a change in my thinking first, and then in my actions next. I'm re-reading it again and the (positive!) changes keep flowing.I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to make some change in their life but is held back by fear. This book doesn't make the fear go away - but it does inspire you to do what you need to do anyway.

Ok we all have fears and for the longest time mine has been that I will run out of time and won't be able to accomplish the goals I have for myself in the sport I do due to limitations that age brings when it comes to sports. We all know that professionally in some sports we are very limited in time to stay in top shape on high level trough you whole life .So I didn't want to slow down ,didn't want to do a vacation because I was afraid that If I fail in the future I will blame it on the time off I took until I came to a realization that there is such thing as stoping productivity when not recharging your batteries . The picture bellow is from our vacation with my girlfriend. I took couple of books with me and it just happens one of them to be "Feel the fear and do it anyway".For a long time I was trying and approaching my fears in different ways but this book finally gave me some guidelines in to how to deal with it .In sport we always set up goals and with new goals new fears come and new comfort zones need to be conquered.I am really grateful to have the chance to read such an amazing literature .Thanks to the author Susan Jeffers . One last thing I want to share is an experience I had while hiking the "Gross Piton" in St.Lucia (the one from the picture). We were talking with our guide and asking questions about the history of the island and the story he shared with us really struck me .He said that when the spaniards came here first they couldn't take over the island because the local Indians were fighting very fearless. I ask him but how come they had guns and the locals were using sticks pretty much .And his answer was what shocked me .He said they didn't fear the guns because they didn't recognize them as a threat because they didn't know what guns are and jumped straight in front of them and fought . It's crazy how sometimes we make such a scary picture out of things because we anticipate the worse case scenario. What if only we didn't know what to expect and go back to that curious stage when we were curious kids and just jumped in front of the new challenges fearless ?

I read this book because I heard it was incredible, and because I'm at a place in my life where I'm ready to take on some new/scary endeavors, and wanted to know how to power through the fear. I learned that fear stops us from becoming greater versions of ourselves, and the importance of not necessarily becoming fearless, but to change your mindset and telling yourself it's okay to be afraid, be compassionate with yourself, and replace the negative inner voice with a positive one. I felt like some of the advice provided was general, which is great, but also felt like some of it was "it must be this way or that". She also talks about doing things WITHOUT fear when the premise of the book is about pushing you to be your greatest, most successful self in SPITE of fear. I encourage the reader to take from it what fits them, which is what I did.

Very helpful book! I'm a little more than half-way through, but I love it. I've always struggled with taking risks and facing rejection (don't we all though?) and I can definitely say that this book has really helped me look at life in a different way, as corny as that sounds. I actually came across this book while working on a project at work and was so intrigued that I looked it up when I got home, ordered a sample on my kindle, and then purchased the book.I'm very, very indecisive and it can be paralyzing to me and this book has helped me look at how to make decisions in a whole new light. I don't want to spoil the book for anyone so I won't go into detail, but it basically comes down to the fact that any decision you make with take you on a certain path and yield a different result. The focus is NOT on making a right or wrong choice, but deciding to make a decision and being confident with your choice. I HIGHLY recommend this book, it's wonderful and the writing style is natural and feels like your talking to a friend when you're reading it.

This book is a reminder that we can not live in a cave. We need to "live" our life and getting over the fear, is the pathway to real living and enjoying life. I highly recommend this book.

Great, easy read. The author is so thorough...The only thing to fear is fear itself and once you open yourself up to the possibilities of life...life defiantly becomes much more interesting. This is a must read, especially for those who fell like they are in a rut and want more from life.

#343,098 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

The author attempts to promote his working lifestyle for the reader broken down in four steps. I have to start by sayings this book is written at a very low reading level and a lot of needless filler. The author breaks it down in four steps D E A and LD is for definition and is probably the only part of the book of any substance. If you’re under 23, naive, and never stand up for self you might get something out of it. It’s mostly work mindset a lot of people have developed over a year or so in the work world.E is elimination which is his time management section. Honestly there is some good advice , however, there are way better books on the topic. He advocates the low information diet which basically being willfully ignorant.A is for automation. In this section he advocates for first automating/ outsourcing as much in your life as you can to save time and money. But the main focus is setting up a business online that sells things of little value very overpriced and attempting to automate that. Having worked in online marketing, I can tell you the information here is outdated, vague, and not very thorough. If you want to set up a business online I would recommend reading a different book. He also advocates calling yourself an expert and teaching courses on topics you have no authority in. Ultimately, this is where the book falls apart as this is his central way to live the four hour work week, which if you take a look at his own life he isn’t living that way.For L is for liberation and I took his low information diet and stopped reading. Conclusion: this book is for naive, weak, dummies who hate their jobs and will take any terrible advice to give them hope. Ultimately this book is like his own online business which sold a product of little value he wasn’t an expert in. Which is what this book is.

I had heard a lot of people rave about this book before I finally picked it up and decided to read it for myself. I'm glad that I read it, but I don't think it was quite as life-changing for me as it was for some of my friends. Don't get me wrong, Ferriss makes some excellent points and he's got some really great tips and tricks in here, I'm just not sure how universal they really are.First of all, when I picked up the book, I didn't expect that he was literally working only four hours a week. I thought he was just talking about ways to spend less time working, but that "The 4-Hour" just sounded good (since he now has a whole line of books with titles that start that way). Nope. Turns out he really only worked four hours every week for a few years. I hate him. Now, with his series of books and everything, that's not true so much, so I hate him less. Now his job is much more similar to what I actually want to do.As I said, Ferriss has some great ways of eliminating clutter and busywork, including things you don't even think of as busywork. I've already started implementing some of these tips at work, and they've come in pretty handy so far. I keep meaning to get rid of a bunch of my physical clutter, but my laziness keeps getting in the way of that. I'll get around to it in the next few weeks.I also appreciated his philosophy of taking mini-retirements throughout life, rather than one long retirement at the end of life. I never did understand the point of retirement, so Ferriss's plan sounds much more appealing to me. As he put it, retirement should be nothing more than a fail-safe in case something happens and you are physically (or mentally) incapable of working. My thoughts exactly. My main problem with his philosophy is that it really only works if you have a product that you are not actually making, but that you can sell. For example, even if I were to quit my day job and write all day every day, I would still be working a lot. Granted, that would make my job a whole lot more portable, but I could never get away with only working four hours per week (at least not until after I sell that bestselling novel, which is such a realistic plan!) In order to do it his way, I would need to have something that is already produced, or that someone else is making (clothes, dietary supplement, etc.) where all I have to do is collect the money that comes in from those sales.Of course, that's a lot harder than it sounds. His ways of eliminating the useless from his life are really quite impressive, and not to be underestimated, but I still wonder if someone in their twenties, who is just starting out in life, can really make his plan work? Some of his success stories include people negotiating working remotely, because they have built up value in their company. Someone who has only been working at their current job for a year or two does not have the kind of leverage necessary to do that.Additionally, he talks about the trick to getting out of your job so you can go have that great once-in-a-lifetime adventure. He mentions considering the worst-case scenario and the fact that worst-case is not necessarily all that bad. One of his points he brings up is that, if he loses his job, he can get another one fairly easily. Well, great for him, but the original book was written before the job market collapsed, followed by this lovely "jobless recovery". I was recently unemployed for eight months and it was not fun. I, too, thought I could get another job within a few months, but that did not turn out to be the case. So, if I go spend all my money on a mini-retirement now, and then come back only to find that I can't get a job for another year, I'll be screwed. Yes, even that worst-case scenario isn't that bad. I could always move back in with my parents, but I'd really rather not. I love them, but they have enough to deal with right now, and the last thing I want to do is burden the people around me because I decided to go globe-trotting for a few months. Timothy Ferriss told me it would be fine!

An excerpt from the book:"Practice the art of nonfinishing. This is another one that took me a long time to learn. Starting something doesn’t automatically justify finishing it. If you are reading an article that sucks, put it down and don’t pick it back up. If you go to a movie and it’s worse than Matrix III, get the hell out of there before more neurons die. If you’re full after half a plate of ribs, put the damn fork down and don’t order dessert. More is not better, and stopping something is often 10 times better than finishing it. Develop the habit of nonfinishing that which is boring or unproductive if a boss isn’t demanding it."This book has no redeeming qualities. So, I've decided to put it down, and I won't be picking it back up. For this one bit of advice, I thank the author.Maybe some people get something out of it. For me, it was a huge waste of my precious time. I like the concept of lifestyle design. I think it is a valid concept. However, his egocentric advice is useless to someone in a different stage of life. This book is NOT one size fits all.I only hope I can get my money back.

I am honestly not entirely sure what to say about this book. The message is stop working harder, start working smarter. As a USA Today bestselling author with multiple number 1's under my belt, I wasn't completely sure how the advice in this book would apply to me, but actually, I came up with several ways to implement this without quitting writing (to move into sales) or hiring a ghostwriter. I was uncertain how to take my personal development to the next level before I bought this book. I'm now working more efficiently. I spent the last 2 months on a mini-retirement traveling the world with my husband, and my book sales are up on new titles. I am spending FAR less time on the little things and overall I feel like I have a positive plan going forward, which is exactly what I needed. Beautiful pictures, gift for my husband who has sailed in San Francisco Bay quite a bit. I, however, did not pay attention to the details and thought it was a full size wall calendar, but it is a small calendar that opens like a book. That actually works well, as he does not have very much space around his desk, and he will be able to hang it up on his bulletin board without it taking up a lot of room.

Much smaller than anticipated

I got an e-mail a few weeks ago which read something along the lines of "If you enjoyed 50 Shades of Grey, you should read Bared to You." Sadly, it had not been released yet, but I eagerly counted the days. I read some early reviews of it and they were overwhelmingly positive, which increased my anticipation even more! Finally, I had the book on my Kindle Fire (release day) and sat down to read, completely ignoring the assignment for my summer class that was due in less than a week and devoured the book. I couldn't put it down and finished it the day I started it. It grabs ahold of you like a baby with a piece of candy and refuses to let you go.Gideon and Eva were both damaged characters. I enjoyed that they weren't perfect but not so damaged I couldn't relate to them, even though they both had some moments you wanted to smack them upside the head. The book was well-written, interesting story, Eva and Gideon had chemistry that almost made you forget to breathe and steamy sex scenes. Eva's model best friend was a great character, as was her boss and his boyfriend. My one main gripe about the book was really about Eva's financial responsibility. Her stepdad was rich, her biological dad was a police officer. At the beginning of the book, she says something about not being able to pay for her student loans so she let her real dad take care of them (we'll forget also for a moment we find out later she has a nest egg she refuses to touch that started at 5 million and has been growing under the watchful care of her step dad but she can't use the interest or the investment returns and her middle class dad has to pay for it?) Then later she buys a very expensive ring? Not acceptable to me. I get that it's fiction and she has many people in her life that are wealthy, but that just seemed wrong. OK, I'll stop griping about that now .I didn't even finish reading the book before I recommended it to my mother-in-law and sister-in-law. Mother-in-law LOVED it, haven't heard from sister-in-law. If you enjoyed 50 shades (and even if you didn't like 50 Shades but you like steamy books every now and again), you should give this a read. Not for younger readers (I won't let my teenage daughter read it yet).Sensuality: several descriptive sex scenesRating: 4 stars

This is the first time reading Sylvia Day and I must say it will not be my last. This is not a (50 Shades of Grey) but much, much more! You must read all 5 books.I found myself crying, laughing, sad, mad, and even I grabbed my own wrist from time to time. I fell into this story. I lived these characters from the start. Gideon is an Alfa-male that every man wants to be and Eva is the woman I wish I could be. How we live our lives from day to day in this society is taxing to say the least. To grab a book and sink into it (hard) is a release. I had mixed emotions at first but as I read each book it made me want more. Is that not what you want an author to do? Well she fulfilled that in this series. I never wanted it to end and when it did I felt drained. Drained to the core. She stripped away my day to day stress and replaced it with love, lust, honor and most of all courage. I felt alive again. I felt MY soul restored. I never write reviews but I do read them before I buy a book. So if you read mine remember one word and one word only CROSSFIRE! Read all the books to understand!

Despite some of the things I say in this review I really do love this series. I have read through it several times and always enjoy it. There is no doubt that its a more soap opera version of Fifty Shades of Grey, but instead of Christian Grey we get Gideon Cross. Eva and Gideon have mutually disfunctional backgrounds that make the options for angst and drama more varied.Eva is a woman moving to New York to start her career after college. She literally falls (yes thats how much its a copy to Fifty Shades) at Gideon’s feet and the sparks fly. Gideon is a multi billionaire business tycoon (shocking!!!) who has a dark past and needs the right woman to break down the walls he’s built around his heart (wait I should just copy and paste my review from Fifty Shades of Grey?). Eva has her own skeletons in the closet (ooohh a twist!) but can’t help falling for Gideon. Cary Taylor is Eva’s best friend, roommate, and like a brother to her. He moves to New York with her to hopefully start his modeling career. Cary is a good side character, beautiful, charismatic, and charming. He adds a lot to the storyline. This is the first book in the 5 book series. The characters are well developed. The storyline is well written and smooth and there are a lot of steamy scenes. It’s a good length and worth the read and the price. Enjoy!

I am so grateful that I finally got around to reading this book. It was eye-opening to be able to see inside the mind of Temple Grandin. It was interesting to learn more about autism and how it affects those who think in that way. With the differences, I was very surprised with how much I felt in common with the author. Oh, I'm not nearly as intelligent as Ms, Grandin, but her sensitivities to touch, and sound and crowds, her visual thinking, well, I saw my own ways of dealing with the same. I almost wanted to see if I would find a hug-machine for myself. But I do enjoy hugs from family and friends. I will find myself having anxiety attacks in a crowd or with too much noise. Even the sound of the fan or the refrigerator will drive me nuts.Mercy. That was what I felt from Ms. Grandin. I love how much care she gives to the animals doomed to be slaughtered. Outside of wishing everyone could be vegetarians, the next best thing is that we learn to treat our fellow beings on this Earth with humane care. This copy was the paperback and the print was very hard for me to read. But since it was a BookCrossing copy I wanted to be able to pass it on to others. This is BCID 395-7719867. I will send it on to others in our group.

This was a fascinating read. I especially liked the first half when she talked about her childhood, her memories and how she came to learn things. It’s very helpful in understanding the different way autistic people think. Her style of writing was intriguing and I think really showed her logical way of seeing things. For the second half I had to continually keep reminding myself that she is talking about her life and her own interests. She devotes two entire chapters to animals, their thoughts and emotions and connecting with them, and while it was very interesting, I obviously do not have the passion for that particular topic that she does. Some of those chapters I felt like I had to plod through a bit.Overall I got out of this book what I thought I would—a better understanding of differences in thought pattern. I’m glad I read it.

I would recommend reading Temple Grandin's books and watching the movie about her life, if you want to know more about Autism; and she is also an interesting individual in my opinion. I myself have high functioning Autism too, so I can relate to her quite a bit; despite having different interests. For example, she's more scientifically oriented than I am. But, I like that she overcame all the obstacles that a lot of people with disabilities face; like people making fun of her, and saying that she can't live a normal life as a couple of examples when she grew up in a difficult time period for people like that. That's why I look up to her.

I loved this book so much. It is filled with tons of facts and a lot of them are very relatable for autistic people. My brother is autistic and this book helps me to somewhat understand why he did some of the things he did. I believe that Grandin made this book to help other autistic people in the world and to also encourage them in a sense. She is not some egotistical scientist who wants to make a extremely biased point on an issue. She is actually very scientific and genuine in her explanations. She does not leave any stones unturned or un-shown. I like this a lot about her book and it is eye opening. The only thing I wish she would have included is taste reactions when she talks about over-stimulation. Other than that she covered everything I could possibly think of wondering or asking about autism.

Great book. I learned much about myself and the difficulties I have had through life. I'm 53 and was just told be my MH person that what I have been trying to deal with all this time is Aspergers. It has been hinted at for a long time but finally someone pointed me at this book and a few others by the same author and my life and hers are so alike it first shocked me, then made me glad to know I am not alone then depressed me because she had people who understood and encouraged her, I got beatings and called "retard". Never knew why, until I watched the movie and started reading this book. Towards the end, much is repeated but still 5 star.

My son is Autistic and I have a neurological/autonomic nervous system disorder that helps me empathize with persons who have Autism. I, too, "think in pictures" and find some of myself in this book, as well as my gaining a better understanding of how my little boy likely views the world.Who better than Dr. Temple Grandin, PhD who happens to be Autistic, to give insight into the world from the perspective of one who had Autism? Dr. Grandin is an amazing person who has shown what one can achieve if one does not accept "you can't" for an answer, no matter your circumstances. She and her mother have inspired me to fight for my son, even when "experts" say he has reached his peak or he will never be able to do something. I have learned that sometimes "no" is not the answer. If I had accepted that my son would never do certain things, he wouldn't be speaking now. Most grateful for this and all of Dr. Grandin's books.
