I think I’ve read them all. The peaceful parent. The mindful parent. The connected parent etc... this was my favorite out of all of them. The author gives really great examples of different behaviors and how you can go about them. This is not a book to read if you just want your kids to obey but this is a book if you want to have a real relationship with your kids. There is also a chapter on self care and working on your own past issues. I believe this book has it all. Along with “5 love languages of children” this is all my parenting library needs.

Sarah Ockwell-Smith's book is excellent as it provides not only information concerning why it is necessary to be gentle in disciplining children but demonstrates practical techniques to accomplish this task. She cited Banduras studies on role modelling that is the most important task as a parent and is not easy for those who were not parented well or maltreated as children. This is especially important in discussing the dangers of using corporal punishment. She has a chapter about school discipline which is timely as it is still legal in 19 US states to use corporal punishment, usually paddling on school children, with disastrous results overrepresented in punishing disabled, autistic or minority children. Congress over the last few years has rejected several bills to make this illegal and is currently rejecting a similar bill. I can vouch for the authors skill in advocating for gentle discipline without physical punishment. I have 32 years in this field of child protection and have written articles and a book on the subject. Her book richly deserves 5 stars.

One of the most life changing books I've ever read.

This book offered nothing of use. Your child is crying for your attention-guess what, they need your attention! Your child gets 1 hour of screen time per day and goes over, take time away the next day to make up for it! For lack of a better word, duh! I could not connect with the author at any point in time reading this book and I have read many child development/discipline books over the years. She also claims to have the answers for how to handle large groups of school children, albeit she has absolutely no experience being in the public education sector. This book is complete and utter garbage, but I try to keep as much out of the landfill as possible, so I returned it.

Sarah Ockwell-Smith is a gift to parents, grandparents and all who need to learn more of how to have a positive effect on our children as they grow and face the workings of the social landscape and world!

Simple read. If only every parent would connect and raise their child with gentle discipline!! Children’s needs would be met and the world would be a better place.

Enjoyed reading this book and learning about the Gentle Discipline method. Part of the way into the book we began using some of the techniques with our three year old son and immediately saw benefits. I didn't find all of the proposed techniques as useful or practical (namely, the techniques in either the violence prevention chapter or the parental anger chapter). In addition, I found some of the author's positions on the value of homework to be wildly different from my own experiences growing up. Nevertheless, reading the book on the whole altered our approach to dealing with a misbehaving toddler. My wife and I are glad we read it and will be recommending it to other parents.

Sarah Ockwell-Smith delivers a scientific and empathetic approach to parenting. An interest in shaping people, not just behaviors, out of our children shines through her writing.

My computer geek insisted on replacing IE with Firefox. I was flummoxed with the decision and knew I wasn't savvy enough to use it to its best extent without help. I checked out this book from our library and knew immediately I had to have a copy for myself so I ordered it. What a godsend! Now I love Firefox and wouldn't use anything else. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was because it hasn't been updated with later printings. I don't know whether that's essential or not. For me it isn't but for those who are more technically advanced, this may be an issue. I do some data harvesting and setting up my computer for it was a breeze using tips I learned in this book. It cut the time I spend and the frustration I was experiencing doing it by a considerable amount. I recommend this book for anyone who needs help with using Firefox.

This reference guide, written by Blake Ross, co-creator of the Firefox browser, presents a step-by-step guide helpful to new and experienced users alike, covering bookmarking, browsing with tabs, blocking pop-up ads, tailoring toolbars, and many other topics. I keep this guide within easy reach whenever I am using my computer. Highly recommended!

I just downloaded Firefox ver. 37.0.2. I have this book but it isn't as easy to read for a newbie as I had hoped. Plus it was written in 2006, so directions telling a person to click on this & click on that do not work. The book is probably out of date. Nothing new has been printed since 2012 which is ancient history in the computer world. I will fumble through. I was a user of Netscape long ago & loved it.

A useful resource item.

Great basic book. Check the versions covered as Firefox updates and adds features frequently.

Excellent source for all info regarding usage of Firefox. Clear and concise. The book has resolved many, many questions in the use of Firefox.

This was for my mother and for whatever reason she was not interested. She did not like thinking life was all about the computer. But I personally like how "Books for Dummies" are written, They are easy to understand and are not like your typical tech manuals,.

It is a great book, but unfortunately I have a very old Mac, so some of the advice doesn't work.

Playing House in Provence is some 200 pages of sustainable adventure and entertainment, seasoned with historical references as delicious as the author's Tarte aux Tomates. The reader is tickled, cajoled and tantalized through four animated journeys into past and present Provence, cobbled together by a first-rate wordsmith. There are elegant musings throughout; one of my favorites describes vintage ads (painted on ancient plaster walls) that are "bleached by the sun, abraded by winds and time, their colors retreat into the walls, leaving a beguiling penumbra of their former practical selves."Of course, being a career humorist, Ms. Weisman wastes no opportunity to play with words:"Be it ever so humble, there's no place like somewhere else" is her validation for attending festivals in Provence while snubbing them in America;"First we try ear plugs, then we move to gateway drugs" for dealing with the never-ending bells of Goult's church;"Coming from a country where Alcatraz is a national historic landmark, we long for the legitimacy of antiquity" found in Provence;"Little Endorphin Annie," a sobriquet for the exercise-obsessed author;"Insistent living" for assisted living;"We don't like tours, we listen in on yours" without having to pay the fare.Ms. Weisman has added another exceptionally smart and funny book to her repertoire. Thanks to her, I have crossed Provence off my bucket list without having to pay the fare.

I can't think of too many writers other than, say, Nora Ephron and David Sedaris whose essays are not only gracefully written but consistently insightful and laugh-out-loud funny. But as Mary-Lou Weisman impressively demonstrates in page after page of "Playing House in Provence", she is clearly a member of that elite circle. It would be hard for me name my favorite of the 36 essays that collectively provide a “from-the-inside-look” at what it's like to be an American trying to become a little French. But a strong candidate would be “Never Try to Act Out a 'Sausage", Ms. Weisman's hilarious account of the "nightmare of incomprehension" that she and her husband Larry experienced the first time they went shopping in a French supermarket. And here's a taste of the dozens of Ms. Weisman’s wry and often self-deprecating digressions that brought either a smile to my face or a nod of recognition on almost every other page:"I suffer from a fear of finding. Although I have never been in a paper bag, it is likely that I could not find my way out of one.""I was pretty sure the man I was asking for directions was French: I couldn't fit into his shirt.""Our neighbor is a human sundial who loves to sit outside his house, moving his chair incrementally to follow the light.""A Turkish toilet is not a facility that invites reading or crossword puzzling."Looking for more of the same? Buy the book today, and spread the word!

I don't remember ever laughing out loud at a travel memoir until Playing House in Provence . After toying with the idea for years, Mary-Lou Weisman and her husband Larry decide to rent a house for a month in a little village called L'Isle sur la Sorgue. They sign up to improve their French ("Immersion Totale") and begin to imagine themselves already becoming "a little bit French." They make progress. After drinking a mild Provencal rose throughout a meal, Mary-Lou observes that "In Vino we find not Veritas but a soupçon of uninhibited fluency." Mary-Lou bakes a Tarte aux Tomatoes after a new friend assures her that "real French women" unroll their crusts from Pillsbury. Larry makes joues de porc (pork cheeks) with advice from the butcher and suggestions from his customers who are more eager to help than place their own orders. That first month leads to three more stays in medieval Provencal villages and I wish there had been more. I cheered them on for their successes and felt their frustration at the French phrase that just wouldn't come or the faucet that shot two streams of water directly into their faces in that charming but antique kitchen. I bet you would do the same. This is writing with wit and insight and just so much fun to read.

Sunny Provence, markets, wine, beautiful villages and rental houses with various problems, eccentric neighbors--in one sense, this book fits neatly into the sort of travel memoir that has become so familiar since Peter Mayle's book years ago. On that level, it succeeds perfectly well. But what makes this book special is Weisman's voice. She's incredibly funny--I laughed out loud at a number of passages--but she's also very honest and introspective, and I think that's what I appreciated most. This is a great book for anyone who has ever tried to learn French (or might be thinking about it); it's also a great book for anyone who has ever thought maybe the life they were living wasn't the one they ought to be. I suspect that includes most of us.

I never give five stars to a book where I've met the author, in case people think I'm doing the writer a favor. But in this case, I have to admit that I laughed out loud several times as I travelled through Provence (on the page) with Mary-Lou and her husband. Her shrewd and honest eye on the world is also turned on her own foibles every so often, which makes for a good read. I read it on an autumn afternoon, and reluctantly put it down whenever I had to return to the real world. Perfect, and cheering, escape.

The book reviews mathematical algorithms that are implemented in various applications, such as Facebook, and criticizes the common fears regarding Artificial Intelligence. The arguments are clear and interesting.

Great book and great service!!

Modeling human behavior is hard - but it is increasingly important for the layperson to understand how and why algorithms impact our lives. This book is a very readable analysis of how data science is used to influence our behavior - for better or worse. It describes the statistical techniques that are used and provides real-life examples of how those techniques work. The sub-title of this book really tells the story - “From Facebook and Google to fake news and filter-bubbles - the algorithms that control our lives." Most people understand that today’s technology behemoths use data science techniques to better understand their users and customize their offerings but it generally stops there. This book attempts to explain to the layman more specifically how companies use mathematics and statistics to better understand us and make predictions as to our behavior. At a more detailed level, the book is divided into 3 parts.* Analyzing Us * This section is mainly about Facebook and Google and how they use different data science techniques to better understand their users and deliver meaningful content. For example: * Facebook - the importance of understanding how social media companies collect information about our personalities and use this data to predict our future behavior. It starts by explaining principal component analysis - a technique used by Facebook to categorize our personalities, values and socio-economic status. While most people tend to think of themselves as multi-dimensional; psychologists have boiled down human traits to a mere 5 elements - openness, conscientiousness, extroversion, agreeableness and neuroticism. Facebook can then analyze our posts, likes and pictures to better understand us across these 5 dimensions and then pitch products to us that are more likely to appeal. * Cambridge Analytica - the importance of understanding probabilities and the inherent limitations of algorithmic predictions. This chapter is fascinating and sets the stage by pointing out that the algorithms underpinning data science are probabilistic - they calculate a number that is proportional to the probability of a specific fact being true about a person. He goes on to explain how regression models use data fitted to one group of people to infer the preferences of others. In the old days (1990's) these regression models could use inputs such as age, gender, class etc to determine the probability that a person would vote for a particular political party. However nowadays, modern data analytics companies have access to an almost limitless variety of data. * Northpointe - the importance of data bias and false positives/negatives as it relates to criminal recidivism * Spotify -- the importance of "data alchemy”, or the need for intuition and expertise by the human data modeler to more fully understand our needs.Sumpter concludes this section with a discussion of Julia Dressel, a student who conducted an experiment that determined that, when all is said and done, human judgment is just as sound as algorithmic predictions, although computers can operate at scale and are faster and cheaper than people. While this may be true when looking at the big picture, I suspect that algorithmic predictions will outperform humans at the margin where a more granular analysis of variables is important.* Influencing Us * This section moves the discussion forward by outlining how data science has become more sophisticated in attempting to better understand us as humans and thereby influence our decisions and choices, such as: * FiveThirtyEight and the booming election forecasting business. There is an inherent challenge in creating probabilistic models to forecast binary events - such as elections or sporting events, although multiple and/or braver predictions (>95% probability) are more meaningful. Further, such predictions must attempt to adjust for the inherent shortcomings in poll data - the primary input in election forecasting, unfortunately, it is very difficult to incorporate the wisdom of the crowd into such models. Statistical models need to understand our sometimes subjective and erratic human behavior otherwise, these models typically do not perform much better than human judgment. * One way of achieving this understanding is to move beyond simply categorizing us to trying to understand and influence us. Amazon recognized this early on, and using a form of collaborative filtering is able to make recommendations as to what we may like. Knowing that people similar to us “also liked” some other product provides the consumer with a level of confidence in a prospective purchase. * Social media has also become a prevalent way to influence our behavior but it does so by amplifying our pre-existing biases. People tend to click on links that take them to new sites containing similar thoughts and ideas - in effect an Echo chamber forms where our beliefs are reinforced. Likewise, filter bubbles use an algorithmic approach to steer us towards material it believes we will appreciate. That said, Sumpter notes that the media tends to exaggerate and sensationalize the influence these algorithms have on our behavior - our real-life interactions with friends and family are more important determinants of our behavior.* Becoming UsSumpter notes that the biggest challenge for the current state of algorithms used by the Facebook's and Google’s of the world is that they do not properly understand the meaning of the information we are sharing with each other. Consequently, these very same companies are attempting to solve this problem by chasing the holy grail - artificial intelligence. * To achieve this, the algorithms must understand context and analogies and to do this they must be able to analyze text, such as the GloVe (Global Vector) algorithm discussed by Sumpter that maps words used together near each other to find meaning and is thereby able to auto-complete our text searches on Google. * Neural networks, which are designed to mimic the way our brains function, have long been used to recognize patterns. However, more recently developed convolutional neural networks can solve problems without being told which problem they are solving. Computers have been trained to use brute force to play and win games like chess and Jeopardy, but more recently, the folks at Google have been able to learn games from the ground up, through trial and error and understanding the objective function of the game * The human body contains 37 trillion cells and the brain 86 billion neurons - that represents a lot of catching up for the AI scientists. * Smart people disagree on the potential perils of AI - for every foreboding Elon Musk or Stephen Hawking there is a far more ambivalent Bill Gates. So where should the average Joe come down on this issue? Maybe they should do as Sumpter suggests and check out Mark Zuckerberg's AI robot (Jarvis) video to see what he can do. IMHO, it's not much more than a slightly smarter home than we have available to us today. * So, is AI’s role in our lives to be relegated to a smart home assistant and a champion game player or will it evolve to a form of general AI? Many smart minds are working on important problems but there is still more hype and hope than results. Sumpter takes a somewhat more skeptical view and I suspect he may be right. Computers and algorithms may be able to do more and more but at what point will the market rebel - I for one am all for AI but I wouldn’t be caught dead in a self-driving car (at least, not yet!)

Where most writers rely on hyperbole and fear around issues like big data and algorithmic decision-making, Sumpter writes clearly, crisply, and with a level head. He does an amazing job of walking you through just enough of the math so that you can understand how data is used -- which then helps you understand how algorithms are good at doing certain things and very limited at doing others. I follow these issues pretty closely for work and was happy to find someone that could address the details and, more importantly, why they matter.

So good. I borrowed it from the library and now just bought my own copy...it’s the kind of book that one can’t help but mark up with notes and highlighting. Not only is it fascinating, but it also gives a lay person a good peek at how these algorithms work. The author is masterful at describing these sorts of complexities in a very easy-to-digest way, without boring the reader with technical jargon.

Becoming Mrs. Lewis: The Improbable Love Story of Joy Davidman and C. S. Lewis

Review

'It's not supposed to be a technical biography of my mother. It's novel. And it's a very good one. . . extraordinarily accurate. . . more accurate than most biographical essays that have been written about my mother.' - Douglas Gresham, son of Joy Davidman, wife of C.S. Lewis. (Read Aloud Revival)'I thought I knew Joy Davidman, the oft mentioned but little examined wife of C. S. Lewis, but in Becoming Mrs. Lewis, Patti Callahan breathes life into this fascinating woman whose hunger for knowledge leads her to buck tradition at every turn. In a beautifully crafted account, Patti unveils Joy as a passionate and courageous--yet very human--seeker of answers to the meaning of life and the depths of faith. Becoming Mrs. Lewis is an unlikely love story that will touch heart, mind, and soul.' --Diane Chamberlain, New York Times bestselling author of The Dream Daughter'Patti Callahan took a character on the periphery, one who has historically taken a back seat to her male counterpart, and given her a fierce, passionate voice. For those fans of Lewis curious about the woman who inspired A Grief Observed this book offers a convincing, fascinating glimpse into the private lives of two very remarkable individuals.' (New York Journal of Books)'Patti Callahan weaves a hypnotic historical fiction narrative of Joy Davidman and C.S. Lewis, or 'Jack,' as he's known to his closest friends . . . Spanning more than a decade, this slow-burning love story will be especially satisfying to writers and C.S. Lewis fans, as there are many references to his literary canon and his famous stories of Narnia. Callahan's prose is heartfelt and full of grace.' (BookPage)'Callahan crafts a masterpiece that details the friendship and ultimate romance between the real Davidman and Lewis . . . Fans of Karen White and Mary Alice Monroe will enjoy this book. Callahan's writing is riveting and her characters spring to life to create a magical and literary experience that won't be soon forgotten.' (Library Journal, STARRED review)'Readers familiar with the life and work of C.S. Lewis will relish learning about the woman who inspired some of his most famous books. Others will find the slow burn of the romance between the two mesmerizing. All fans of women's fiction, particularly works with religious themes, will appreciate reading about this vibrant and intelligent woman.' (Booklist)'Layered with personal reflection, poignant life events, and the Davidman-Lewis journey toward respect and love, Becoming Mrs. Lewis may very well become a literary classic of its own.' (Hope by the Book, GOLD STAR review)'Patti Callahan's lyrical novel Becoming Mrs. Lewis details American author Joy Davidman's unconventional friendship-turned-romance with famed author and Christian apologist C.S. Lewis . . . The thoughtful narrative reads more like a memoir than fiction.' (WORLD magazine)'Patti Callahan has inhabited her subject so convincingly that Joy's light can finally shine brightly. Highly, highly recommended!' (Historical Novels Review)'Callahan (The Bookshop at Water's End) vividly enters the life of a woman searching for both God and romantic love in this pleasing historical novel about writer and poet Joy Davidman. In 1946, Joy lives in Ossining, N.Y., with her alcoholic husband, Bill Gresham, and her two small sons. In a moment of desperation, she prays to a God she doesn't believe in and experiences feeling 'fully known and loved.' Three years later, now deeply considering Christianity, she writes to Christian apologist C.S. Lewis with her questions about God. He responds, beginning a long-term correspondence in which Joy finds 'peace, connection, and intellectual intimacy.' By 1952, she wants to leave her unfaithful, abusive husband, but sees no way out. She does manage to take a much-needed physical and mental respite, heading to England for six months and falling in love with both England and Lewis; her only regret is leaving behind her sons. But, even after Bill and Joy divorce, Lewis at first keeps their relationship platonic, and Joy must search for true love and fulfillment through her relationship with God. Making full use of historical documentation, Callahan has created an incredible portrait of a complex woman.' (Publishers Weekly, STARRED REVIEW)

I sensed a feeling of emotion and conviction in this novel that I have not felt in a novel in years. The research and detail made me feel completely wrapped up in Joy and Jacks lives and their love story. I admire Joy and feel inspired by her quest for the truth; I think Patti Callahan did a wonderful job of seeking to tell the story in Joy’s voice and her cadence. After reading the novel (practically overnight as I couldn’t put it down), I feel like I know a woman that not only inspires my confidence and boldness, but one that I would have been good friends with. I think every reader, man or woman, will identify with moments in this novel. I’ve read two of Patti’s other novels but must say THIS IS MY FAVORITE! I could only hope that the novel inspires a movie so that Patti’s story of their life reaches more people. This is Callahan at her finest, in my opinion!

I love the C.S. Lewis books and have enjoyed stories of the Lewis-Davidman marriage. Sadly the author, while a popular NYT best-seller, does not seem too deeply familiar with Lewis' works. There is a George MacDonald book referenced as "The Light Princess" which should correctly be "The Lost Princess." Also the author confuses The Last Battle with The Magician's Nephew in a later chapter where she references the latter only to describe the former. Most importantly, it seems simply audacious to approach a biography in the first person and whether her facts of the lives of the characters are more accurate or less so than the above discrepancies, she could certainly have shown more sensitivity to the individuals she involves in her story. There is a definite feminist bent, which may be allowable, but it does seem she treats Mr. Lewis, and even Ms. Davidman's first husband, with an overly judgmental approach at times. While entertaining, it is not an easy book to digest for one who is sensitive to the authors she purports to admire while dragging their intimate lives into the spotlight post mortem. I would not highly recommend this, her latest book.

While BECOMING MRS. LEWIS offers a compelling story, there are times when Ms. Callahan's narrative becomes embarrassing because of her saccharine, sentimental style of writing that's reminiscent of a romance novel. By the way, Ms. Callahan, Joy and Jack could not have strolled into London's Blackwell's Bookshop in June 1954 (chapter 37, page 273) because the company did not open a London flagship shop until 1995. While this book is fiction, some cultural references truly need to be accurate. I was very excited about reading this novel and purchased it on the day it was released on Amazon. I just wish that an editor could have eliminated all of the purple prose.

I’ve always been fascinated by CS Lewis’ wife Joy. I knew the basic story: Joy was a divorcee who married her dear friend CS Lewis to stay in England. After shes’s diagnosed with cancer they admit their love for each other. The full story of Joy is quite complex. Like Mr. Lewis she was an atheist who converted later in life. She was encouraged by a mutual friend to write to Mr. Lewis about faith. In the meantime her relationship with her husband and her health were deteriorating. She takes an extended trip to England and gets to know CS Lewis and his brother. Eventually before returning to America, she finds out her husband has fallen in love with her cousin. Deciding to move to England permanently, she continues her deep friendship with CS Lewis who offers to marry her when she can’t extend her Visa. At this point she’s deeply in love with CS Lewis, but he stays steadfast that they are friends, until learning she has incurable cancer. This book is very well written. It had me riveted from the very beginning. Although it’s a work of historical fiction, the story itself is completely factual. Throughout the book other famous authors come in and out including PL Travers, TS Elliot, and of course JRR Tolkien. I recommend this book for all CS Lewis fans.

Patti Callahan Henry has been a favorite author of mine throughout the years, an avid fan –with twelve New York Times bestselling novels – she has been hailed as a “fresh new voice” in contemporary Southern fiction. I have had the opportunity of reading each of them and thoroughly enjoyed.Check out my Q&A Interview with Author Patti Callahan Henry! Thank you, Patti— so much fun.In her latest historical fiction, the author dazzles! She vividly re-creates the world of Joy and C. S. Lewis in BECOMING MRS. LEWIS. What starts as a spiritual quest turns into history. Moving and riveting, a singular woman whom C. S. Lewis deeply loved and profoundly influenced his later writings. However, there is much about Joy some overlook behind the shadow of this influential man.We have heard the author reference in her interviews, “The endless complications and multifaceted dimensions of love and desire fascinate me—the promises these feelings prompt us to make.”Whether she is writing about friendship, forgiveness, love, the power of family, self-discovery or second chances, the author writes with lyrical prose, deep emotion from the heart, and a master at her craft. However, in BECOMING MRS. LEWIS, the author shines. A literary work of art! Illuminating. Extremely moving and memorable. A compelling and convincing book you will treasure. (Cover love). Before you finish the book, you will be returning to works of both Helen Joy Davidman and C.S. Lewis —and devouring in a new light. A beautiful love story—in more ways than one. Two strong literary minds coming together as one as they try to understand life, spirituality, choices, and relationships. As Patti reiterates, this novel is written in a key of empathy for this extraordinary woman. She hopes to capture some of Joy’s courage, conflicted and sometimes disparaged choices, as well as her abiding love for a man we know as C. S. Lewis, but whom she identified as a mentor, best friend, and in the end her love, and husband. The man she knew as Jack. Indeed, Patti, you have accomplished this and more. Joy would be proud. If you have read the author’s previous books, you may have seen her scattered quotes from C.S. Lewis (1898-1963), a scholar and teacher at both Oxford and Cambridge Universities who is best known for his Narnia Chronicles for children, was an atheist for most of his early life and converted to Christianity in 1931. He was an Oxford don, a poet, an imaginative genius, a master at prose and theme.“A talented debater and writer, Lewis published many works on a wide variety of topics—but the subjects that most interest me, especially as a writer, revolve around his exploration of human longing and the search for meaning. His writing has inspired me since I read The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe as a child. The Screwtape Letters offers profound insights into human nature.”Now, it is not surprising Henry would dive into her latest project, penning an extraordinary novel of Joy Davidman, a poet, writer, and the woman C. S. “Jack” Lewis “my whole world.” Writing as Patti Callahan, the author traces Joy’s story from New York to London to Oxford. Joy’s life was a big part of Lewis’s and his writing. She breathes new life into a story, not often told. Through extensive research and travel, she speaks of the woman, not behind the man, but “beside him.” Now, for the first time, the author takes a closer look at this amazing woman.BECOMING MRS. LEWIS is a remarkable story of a brilliant writer. She was a force of beautiful prose and intelligence. A sophisticated and complex woman often misunderstood. A multi-award- winning poet, a novelist, a critic, and protégé of the MacDowell Colony and much more. Her impressive credentials graduated from college at fifteen and received her master’s degree in fiction from Columbia.Yet there were conflicting narratives about her life. Some thought she was a brash New Yorker who inserted herself into Lewis’s life. However, looking back to the era, this was a complicated, yet courageous woman. Everything about Joy seemed ill-matched for an Oxford don and Christian apologist living in England. She was a married woman who lived in Upstate New York with her two young sons. After C.S. Lewis went public with his conversion and commitment to Jesus Christ, controversy hounded him until his death. From his lack of theological sophistication, and other fundamentalists attacking his interpretation of scripture and Christian traditions. But none of these issues caused more stirring than the furor that surrounded his marriage to Helen Joy Davidman. In the mind of many of C.S. Lewis's friends, it was bad enough that a bachelor nearly sixty years old married a woman of forty. But to make matters worse, she was an American divorcee who also happened to be Jewish and the mother of two boys. How could this match possibly come about? On paper, there was not a more impossible pairing. But in the end proved a memorable love story. The author takes us back to 1927, Bronx New York to 1946 — marriage to William Lindsay Gresham (Bill). Two sons, Davy and Douglas. From an atheist moved to pray when tragedy came. A breakdown, an alcoholic and unfaithful husband, tearing him back to the bottle. She prayed for help. But to whom?An unquestionable belief. Her doubt about the Christ. A Christ, C. S. Lewis apparently believed in. Leading her to read an article by a Beloit College professor Chad Walsh. “Apostle to the Skeptics” an in-depth study of an Oxford fellow in England. A man named C. S. Lewis who was a converted atheist. Of course, she had heard of him and read some of this work. However, soon she would read everything he wrote, being drawn to the wisdom hidden in the story: The Screwtape Letters. There is much which occurred leading up to the introduction of these two literary souls in 1950. Patti Callahan takes us on the journey. The before and after. The C.S. Lewis and Chad Walsh connection provided the beginning of a spark. At Chad's suggestion, she read everything Lewis wrote as well as others. Between the New York pastor and her mentor, Chad Walsh, Joy grew in faith and began manifesting signs of genuine conversion and repentance. At Chad Walsh's urging, Joy wrote to C.S. Lewis about some of her thoughts on his books. Although Walsh assured Joy that Lewis always answered his correspondence, it took her two years to find the courage to write. When she did, in January 1950, Lewis's brother noted in his journal that Jack had received a fascinating letter from a most interesting American woman, Mrs. Gresham. For the next two and a half years Joy and C.S. Lewis carried on a rich correspondence that intellectually and spiritually encouraged each of them. Over that quarter decade, Joy's health and family problems opened the way for the famous English author and his talented American pen friend to meet.“Who is this God I now believe in? What am I to do with this Truth? Was it real at all or have I deluded myself with another cure-all that cures nothing?” Joy to Lewis. She wanted to him to see her. She wanted him to know her.“Out of the corner of his letters I experienced a different link of life: one of peace and connection and intellectual intimacy, of humor and kindness, and I indulged.”During the late 1940s Joy's health deteriorated. She suffered from nervous exhaustion while trying to raise the boys and write enough to pay all the bills. Joy finished several writing projects, including a novel, Weeping Bay, that came out with Macmillan in early 1950. Then while writing a book-length Jewish-Christian interpretation of the Ten Commandments, she became gravely ill with jaundice. Her doctor ordered rest - preferably away from the pressures of her chaotic house and family.During all this, Joy received a request from her first cousin, Renee with two children from Alabama, desperately trying to escape her abusive and alcoholic husband. Joy happily took them under her wing and the visit proved to be a help to her, as well. This provided supportive for Joy to get away to write and rejuvenate and finally meet C. S Lewis. She left America. She also left behind those who did not understand. She hated leaving the boys behind, but she knew she would return stronger and Renee was supportive. Bill wanted her to do what was best to heal (at the time). However, her church community scowled. Other women talked about her.“Did they not feel the anxiety that comes when the inner light rises and cries out, “Let me live”?She soon was seduced by England. There is much in between. She would return home, but this was not the end. From the Kilns garden, Oxford, Magdalen, to Ireland, Greece, Emerald Isle, to the Old Inn in Crawforshire—their storytelling, their extended family, and their love. The couple only married for three short years. The ecstasy in pain, the redemption of the past, love that surpassed all understanding. Books have been written, and their stories have been dissected. A remarkable couple whose lives intersected and became as one.“Grace does not tell us how long we have in our life, or what comes next—that’s why grace is given only in the moment. Unmerited mercy is never earned.”When Joy had to leave in 1960, more than ten years after she opened his first letter. He grieved. He wrote of this enveloping grief, and it became one of his most beloved books —A Grief Observed. After their marriage, he became a wonderful stepfather to Joy’s sons. He wrote two more books. These books and these works would not exist without Joy’s love and life, without his love for her.Lewis believed that Joy helped complete him as a person, and she acknowledged that he did the same for her, reflected in both their works. From a Grief Observed to The Four Loves. Those of us who have admired C. S. Lewis also should be grateful for Joy Davidman Lewis as well, since his collection would not be what it is today without their connection.“A compelling, page-turning narrative . . . BECOMING MRS. LEWIS we hope is the first of many books from Patti Callahan to re-examine history from a fresh, female contemporary point of view. Essential women, making an impact on in the world, often behind the scenes.A special thank you to Thomas Nelson @TNZFiction and #NetGalley for an early reading copy of #BecomingMrsLewis. Also pre-ordered the hardcover and audiobook. #JDCMustReadBooks
