After scanning the pages I can say it has a lot of information in it but I doubt any teens would see it as anything more than another text book to wade through. I thought I could gain some knowledge about how to keep my teen eating healthfully but there isn't much in there that we don't already know. I'm sure that someone would gain a lot of good information from reading this book but for me and mine it's not useful.

I purchased this book as part of my homeschool health curriculum, but I found that I didn't even have to assign chapters out of it. The kids would just pick it up and read it at will. The writing style is engaging for teens, the subject matter relevant, the theme positive. The kids themselves started initiating changes in their food choices after reading it.

Loved the book for adult reading however, I found it to be a bit heavy for a teenager's reading habits.

The recipes are great and uniquely detailed. However, there are very few photos and the recipes call for a tremendous amount of oil. The first time we cook a recipe, we start out cutting the recommended amount of oil in half.That said, we have nevertheless made great use of it. We have cooked 13 if the recipes within three months. Every single one was a winner. You can’t say that about many cookbooks.

Long ago I had this in hardcover, and a housemate left it on the stove and turned an electric burner on under it! Drama ensued, but everything turned out alright -- except the book was ruined and she said (years ago mind you) she couldn't find a replacement copy.Get this. It's delightful. I really don't enjoy the tone of the author, who is colonial as all get out, but the recipes and techniques are fantastic.Worth it just for the wonton soup recipe. You will become highly suspect of most wontons after this, lol.We used to have wonton parties and I'd teach my friends to make them, and put them up in freezer bags. So good!

Really good spicy recipes. Includes detailed instructions on making various spicy sauces, which you could combine with any meat or veggies you like or have around the kitchen. Get a cooking shovel as recommended in the book, it's a great tool.

Man, I love this book. The recipies are kinda long, but it's easy enough to follow. My fav in the book - 'Pock Marked Ma's Bean Curd'. The one recipie that opened my eyes to the fact tofu can be really, really tastey when the dish is well spiced and given the time to absorb the flavors around it (I think its even better and hotter the next day.)The hot and sour soup is also excellent -- more like a stew and completely unlike anything I've had in a run of the mill 'chinese food' place.My sister picked this book up first and one thing she regularly altered was cutting the oil in the recipies, about in half in most instances. Also, for recipies that ask for ground pork, grinding pork loin steaks (fat trimmed) gets you excellent flavor but less fat.When a recipie asks for fresh water chestnuts, I'd suggest not using canned. The flavor is completely different. Fresh jicima might be a better substitute if you can't get fresh water chestnuts.

One of the few cookbooks I've read cover to cover. I found this cookbook after cooking an eggplant dish from another Szechwan cookbook, Land of Plenty by Fuchsia Dunlop, that I found underseasoned for Szechwan cuisine. This sent me on a search for a Szechwan cookbook with more robust recipes. That's when I found Mrs. Chiang's Szechwan Cookbook. The first recipe I tried was Chicken and Cucumbers because I had a cucumber that I needed to use. Nothing wimpy about this recipe: 10 garlic cloves and 4 hot red peppers. Great depth of flavor. I am going to be trying a lot of recipes in this book.

If you love to cook and like Chinese-Szechwanese food, you will love this book.There is great clarity in the writing and instructions, and the story behind the book and Mrs. Chiang are a joy to read.There has not been a single recipe I did not enjoy - so far I have made about 1/3 of the recipes listed. Some are just excellent and addictive - like Bon Bon Chicken, Pork in fish style, Anise Chicken. Be prepared to make lots of trips to your (Asian) store, as you will be going through a LOT of star anise, szechwan peppers, ginger, scallions, garlic, etc.. And try to find a good source of pork.Hard to believe it has been out of print for so long. I have Dunlop's book as well, which is very good, but a bit more convoluted. I would recommend this book first, then Dunlops Land of Plenty.

I am an Executive Chef with an extensive collection of cookbooks, and this is by far by favorite. This is the single best work on the subject I have ever read. There is no finer Chinese cookbook available. A little dated, perhaps, but still invaluable. I enjoyed this one so much I read it novel-like from cover to cover and refer to it frequently. I can't say enough good about this book.

I do a great deal of Chinese cooking and this cookbook has some of the more authentic recipes found in Westernized cookbooks. With the online and increasing local availability of true Chinese ingredients and sauces really great, close to authentic Chinese cooking can be done at home - and if you do you should have this cookbook. My reference to authentic is from trips to SE Asia.

This book sound helpful but formulas are tedious and impractical to use. One would do better with a list of amounts of lactose in certain foods. Saying they give you lactose info about over 1,000 foods is silly. Soda,alcohol and all fruits and veggies are lactose free but they list every type. Save your money. Lots of typos also; seems like noone proofread it!

Awkwardly written and hard to figure out. Better books on the subject are available.

One of my friend was diagnosed with a lactose intolerance an year ago. Since then, she completely avoided lactose as she was uncertain of how much she can stomach and feared symptoms. she just felt insecure about how much she was going to be able to stomach. Book has beautiful illustrations, but I was very surprised by one of the pages. See attached pic. I’mnot ready to explain gay marriage to my 6 year old.

I gave this book to my grandchildren because I am a quilter, and love to bestow my quilts on those I love. I understand it's meaning and message, and hate to give it a bad review, but be warned. My grandchildren were in tears after the 2nd Grandma died. Not for sensitive children who love their grandmas.

The original version of this book is wonderful. It was a favorite read aloud story of my elementary students and myself for years. When I ordered copies of the 25th edition for my grandchildren I was not aware that the original was changed. I will not read this version to my grandchildren because of the ending.

my daughter in law who is having a baby is Jewish. i made a quilt for the baby and i tucked this book in with it. it was perfect accompaniment. the story is beautifully told...about family, traditions, and the circle of life. the quilt was made with clothing from the family members "basket of clothes". the quilt is then handed down through the generations...becoming a part of the important celebrations...from wedding canopies, to tablecloths for the sabbath dinner, to wrapping a new baby within it's love. the book was poignant...and i hope my quilt will be passed down through the generations as well as it surrounds her with love throughout the years..

Beautiful story of the love and traditions woven throughout a family's generations. This book is illustrated in a way that invites the reader into their family. What a wonderful book,,,a treasure!

This book inspired me to create a quilt for a friend's daughter whose wedding is in January. I have asked the members of her family and friends to contribute to the quilt and I have a friend who is a quilter. So, yes, I enjoyed this sweet little book.

Patricia Polacco is one of the greatest storytellers of our generation. She has put down snippets of not only her life, but of her ancestors, into delightful stories that transcends all age groups. THE KEEPING QUILT is about Polacco's Great-Grandmother Anna, who immigrated to New York City. The only two things that she still owned from her native Russia were her dress and a babushka. Anna's mother eventually takes parts of her dress and babushka along with old clothes belonging to other relatives and makes a quilt that will remind everyone of their homeland. This quilt serves as a source of comfort and memories for future generations. This is another book that I bought my daughter for her birthday. She will read this book to her second graders perhaps inspiring a new generation to write down the memories of the past.

The book was in good condition. The story is good, too. There four quilters in our family. My mother's quilts had stories in them. So I love the book.

This is an excellent textbook for academia and industry alike, although the style leans towards academia. The book introduces various machine learning methods in detail like matrix factorization, PLSA, LDA, SVD, clustering, classification, and deep learning. The exposition is clear, intuitive, and certainly not dry, which can sometimes be a risk for mathematically oriented books. Coverage of deep learning includes some unique perspectives on word2vec, RNNs, and LSTMs. Beautiful presentation of word2vec is provided together with its relationship to matrix factorization. Even though word2vec is also covered in Jurafsky (Chapter 16) and in some other books, the details here are far greater than any other book I have seen.The insights and connections in the book are pretty amazing. Word2vec is connected to matrix factorization, SVMs/RFs are connected to nearest neighbors, NMF is connected to PLSA, and so on. Insights are provide on why kernels truly work and the procedure for systematic kernelization of arbitrary problems is provided. Other covered topics include opinion mining, summarization, text segmentation, and information extraction. Examples and pseudocodes are given in many chapters.The book covers all the three aspects of machine learning (deep focus), information retrieval, (light focus), and sequence-centric topics like information extraction/summarization. The style and quality of writing is somewhat similar to "An Introduction to Information Retrieval" by Manning although the content and coverage are quite different (and more extensive). Manning focuses on IR and touches on machine learning, whereas this book focuses on machine learning and touches on IR. The book contains about 500 pages, although the amount of content is larger than other books of comparable size because of the smaller font used.This book is clearly not a programming or implementation book, and it seems to be targeted to university classrooms, with a presentation thatis independent of specific programming frameworks (like Python). This is on par for a university textbook, and preferable for someone from academia. Nevertheless, industry can benefit too, because the pseudocodes and detailed explanations are sufficient for a mathematically and algorithmically competent engineer to implement what they want. The author also provides bibliographic summaries with pointers to softwareresources.

This is the single best global guide there is. Period. Sure--there is google. Try that on your next trip. LOL. I've said this several times. I've removed underwear to pack this guidebook. I never jump the globe without it (of course until the new one is released--usually April-ish each year). This is so cheap....it's under 2 drinks in any upper class global club! Have fun!!!

Generally dependable

The book is inclusive of many hotels, restaurants, bars, etc. The content of 1,300 pages is way exaggerated as each listing is translated into 5 different languages. Would have been much better/concise/convenient to sell a single edition of 250 pages for each language. There are also a multitude of advertisements throughout. If I were receiving the info for free the ads would be understandable, but to pay upwards of thirty US and be inundated with ads- ugh! Worse of all, the print is close to microscopic; about a size 4-5 font. One has to literally pull out a magnifying glass to peruse the book. IMO, the book is a waste of money and the content would have been much better published through a .pdf file to view (and zoom) on an ipad or even a subscription to an app. Was going to purchase other Spartacus pubs, but no way in hell after this one!
